| 1.Ghent Bio-Economy’s First International Summer School |
| Dates | 07 Aug 2012 → 10 Aug 2012 | [ID=481679] |
| Location | Ghent, Belgium |
| Abstract | In the bio-based economy, renewable resources (i.e. lignocellulose) instead of fossil resources (e.g. petroleum) are used as raw materials for the production of chemicals, materials and fuels. Biotechnology plays a key role in this value chain. Plant (green) biotechnology on the one hand is important for the primary production of biomass through the genetic improvement of crops. Industrial (white) biotechnology on the other hand is needed for the conversion of biomass into various products, using micro-organisms (fermentation) and their enzymes (biocatalysis). In the ‘Ghent Bio-Economy’ summer school, a comprehensive and integrated overview of the bio-based economy will be presented by a number of world-leading experts, who will cover the complete process from biomass to bioproduct. In addition, societal aspects that influence the consumer’s behaviour will also be dealt with, such as the “food versus fuel” debate and the use of genetically-modified organisms (GMO). The summer school is mainly oriented towards PhD students working in the field and will be organized in the historical city of Ghent, Belgium. |
