abstract: The International Conference on Conceptual Modeling is a leading international forum for presenting and discussing current research and applications in which the major emphasis is on conceptual modeling. Topics of interest span the entire spectrum of conceptual modeling including research and practice in areas such as theories of concepts and ontologies underlying conceptual modeling, methods and tools for developing and communicating conceptual models, and techniques for transforming conceptual models into effective implementations.

abstract: Ziel des Kurses ist die Verbesserung der Qualität und Relevanz von Recherchen in wichtigen Datenbanksystemen (u.a. SciFinder Scholar, CrossFire, Web of Science) durch vergleichende Diskussion über deren Stärken und Schwächen anhand von Fallbeispielen. Fallbeispiele aus der Recherchepraxis (u.a. Chemical Abstracts, Beilstein, Gmelin, Science Citation Index) und elektronisches Unterrichtsmaterial aus dem Projekt 'CHEMGAROO' dienen zur Veranschaulichung wichtiger Aspekte von Recherchen: - Auswahl von Datenbanken/Benutzeroberflächen - Metainformation (Erfassungsrahmen, Inhalt und Gliederung der Datenbanken) - Suchmöglichkeiten - Grenzen von Benutzeroberflächen, die sich mit anderen Zugriffsmöglichkeiten für die gleiche Datenbank überwinden lassen Damit werden Dokumentation und Kurse der Produzenten und Anbieter wesentlich ergänzt. abstract: Resource discovery is the process of identifying and locating existing resources that have a particular property. Machine-based resource discovery relies on crawling, clustering, and classifying resources discovered on the Web automatically. Resources are organized with respect to metadata that characterize their content (for data sources), their semantics (in terms of ontological classes and relationships), their characteristics (syntactical properties), their performance (with metrics and benchmarks), their quality (curation, reliability, trust), etc. Resource discovery systems allow the expression of queries to identify and locate resources that implement specific tasks.

The First International Workshop on Resource Discovery aims at bringing together researchers, developers, and practitioners to discuss research issues and experience in developing and deploying concepts, applications, and solutions addressing various issues related to resource discovery.

abstract: Since the end of the Cold War, the threat of large scale wars has been substituted by new threats: terrorism, organised crime, trafficking, smuggling, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. To react to them, a security strategy is necessary, but in order to be effective it requires several instruments, including technological tools. Consequently, research and development in the field of security is proving to be an ever-expanding field all over the world.

In the last few years, several public initiatives involving data mining in security research have been proposed both in the USA and in Europe, after a series of European Commission initiatives.

The International Conference on Data Mining started in 1999 and since then has evolved to take into account these new initiatives. In fact, data mining is seen more and more not only as a key technology in business, engineering and science but as one of the key features in security. To stress that all these technologies must be seen as a way to improve not only the security of citizens but also their freedom, special attention will be given to data protection research issues.
