Abstract	Sustainable development demands processes that are more efficient, more acceptable to society and leave a smaller environmental impact. To meet these goals, which involve both innovation and intensification, materials and processes need to be optimized based on a detailed description of physical phenomena and chemical reactions. Integrated multidisciplinary approaches are required, examining complex, non-linear, non-equilibrium phenomena occurring on different length and time scales. Multiscale approaches rely on upward and downward cascades of information between small scales and larger ones. A good understanding of the interplay between these phenomena on different scales is necessary.
