05 Mar 2011 → 07 Mar 2011; Algarve, Portugal

abstract: Pervasive and embedded computing and communication is a paradigm that aims at providing trustworthy computing solutions and communication services all the time and everywhere. This entails the need for an interdisciplinary field of R&D that utilizes and integrates pervasive, wireless, embedded, wearable and/or mobile technologies. Intelligent software systems and technologies involving some sort of digital signal processing are present in many applications. Embedded and ubiquitous computing and communication systems are now invading every aspect of our daily life and are expected to profoundly change our life in the near future. The availability of small, low-cost, and low-power sensors, radios, and microcontrollers has triggered a huge wave of research in networked embedded sensing systems. The currently emerging cyber-physical systems community emphasizes the integration of actuation and control, leading to the need for secure, private, and reliable computing and communication services. Papers describing original work are invited in any of the areas listed below. Accepted papers, presented at the conference by one of the authors, will be published in the proceedings of PECCS. Acceptance will be based on quality, relevance and originality. There will be both oral and poster sessions. Special sessions, dedicated to case-studies and commercial presentations, as well as technical tutorials, dedicated to technical/scientific topics, are also envisaged: companies interested in presenting their products/methodologies or researchers interested in lecturing a tutorial are invited to contact the conference secretariat.

05 Mar 2011 → 07 Mar 2011; Algarve, Portugal

abstract: More and more services are available nowadays, on the PC or on a mobile device, that depend on the localization of a person. Some of these services are context dependent and may be related to sensor networks in personal environments either outdoors or inside smart homes. Localization can be achieved via a variety of technologies: Indoor localization technologies include Bluetooth, WiFi, RFID, UWB and ultrasounds. Outdoor environments may be tackled with technologies such as WiMAX and GPS. In many useful applications, indoor systems should be integrated with outdoor systems in order to provide global coverage. This special session seeks to bring together researchers from universities, practitioners from companies and also those who belong to governmental agencies interested in the socio-technical issues that shape the networked society of the future. The topic of this special session is relevant for discussing issues such as how technology can contribute to increase efficiency and life quality of people to perform their daily activities in a world of increasing mobility and easy access to all kinds of services. There are applications in tourism, health, sports, the office, etc. We encourage authors to submit papers describing original work, including methods, techniques, recent advances, applications and tools.

05 Mar 2011 → 07 Mar 2011; Algarve, Portugal

abstract: Self-aware and adaptive (SAA) systems are capable of monitoring their own states and the surrounding environment, and adapt themselves to different scenarios and requirements. The concept of self-awareness and adaptivity belongs to the wide scope of autonomic computing, while focusing on the aspects of awareness and adaptation. SAA features become essential in the emerging and future embedded system, as the number of components and their heterogeneity increase significantly, for both single-chip parallel processing and physically distributed processing. While existing works propose various superior features for adaptive systems, practical and efficient solutions to achieve SAA systems still call for wider and more dedicated efforts, including the discussion on SAA theory and modeling, scalable design approaches and framework, design techniques and practical implementation for low-power/energy, high dependability and security, etc.. The SAAES special session addresses these important and challenging topics.
