Abstract	Zur Beantwortung zahlreicher Fragestellungen in behördlichen, betrieblichen und wissenschaftlichen Umweltinformationssystemen (UIS) sind umfangreiche Datenbestände erforderlich. Diese weisen in der Regel einen räumlichen, zeitlichen und fachlichen Bezug auf. Im einfachsten Fall werden sämtliche zur Beantwortung einer Fragestellung relevanten Daten einheitlich in einem Umweltinformationssystem verwaltet, häufig sind jedoch Informationen aus mehreren Quellen miteinander zu verknüpfen und mit weiteren Methoden zu bearbeiten. Vor diesem Hintergrund ergeben sich für UIS zwei Fragestellungen: 1) Durch welche Techniken und Methoden sind Fachverfahren in einzelnen UIS adäquat zu unterstützen? 2) Wie ist das Zusammenspiel unterschiedlicher UIS zur Beantwortung weitergehender Fragestellungen zu organisieren? Neben diesen eher technisch orientierten Fragestellungen stellt das erforderliche Zusammenwirken unterschiedlicher Fachdisziplinen bei differenzierten Organisationsstrukturen eine weitere wesentliche Herausforderung dar.
