abstract: An introduction to the science of making chemical measurements. The course begins with the fundamentals of gathering information and samples. How to quantify and minimize measurement error is covered next with an introduction to the elementary statistics needed to understand chemical measurements. The principles of how chromatographs achieve chemical separations are explained with an eye towards helping users optimize their analyses. The principles of spectroscopy are presented and are the basis for discussions of how FTIR and UV/Vis spectrometers work and are used. In-class exercises and homework will be used to increase retention of knowledge.

abstract: This course presents the fundamentals of Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics as they apply to the chemical structure of drugs. There will be specific discussion of the role of medicinal chemistry in the drug discovery process, how chemical structure affects the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME properties) of drugs and also drug affinity and efficacy (Pharmacodynamics). This course is centered on gaining an understanding of in vitro PK assay data (Caco-2, MDCK, PAMPA, microsomes, hepatocytes etc) to predict in vivo PK and optimize drug ADME properties.
