Alle Hersteller mussten sich bei der Gemeinsamen Stelle registrieren lassen, damit sie (weiterhin) Elektrogeräte auf den Markt bringen dürfen. Seit März 2006 sind die Hersteller verpflichtet, die gesammelten Geräte zurückzunehmen und nach dem Stand der Technik sicher zu entsorgen. Zudem dürfen bestimmte Schwermetalle wie Blei und Cadmium oder bromierte Flammschutzmittel in neuen Geräten nicht mehr eingesetzt werden.
