Melt in the Mantle
ID
628252
Termin
15. Feb 2016 - 17. Jun 2016
Ort
Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, , Großbritannien
Zusammenfassung
The Earth's mantle is almost entirely solid, but on geological timescales it convects vigorously, the well-known surface expression of this being plate tectonics. Although the basic thermodynamics of melt generation in these settings is well understood, how the melt is transported to the surface is not, despite several decades of work on the problem. Sophisticated mathematical techniques are needed to map an understanding of physics at the smallest scales to plate-tectonic scales. Seismology offers a way to image melt in the mantle, but development of new tools in inverse theory is required to extract that information. Models are cast as a series of coupled non-linear PDEs, which require advanced numerical techniques to solve. This programme will bring together a broad spectrum of mathematicians and solid Earth scientists to tackle these and other challenges in the area. Several workshops will take place during the programme. For full details please see www.newton.ac.uk/events.html.

Zusammenfassung
Numerical modelling, including process-based modelling and flume tank studies, has been used extensively over the last decades to study sediment movement, depositional processes and resulting (ancient) stratal architectures. These approaches have traditionally been challenged by our ability to integrate modelling results with reality, temporal and spatial scaling issues, subsurface data conditioning as well as our ability to extract quantitative data from these numerical models. However, the development of more mature 3D numerical models and the advance of larger computers have overcome some of the disadvantages.

Termin
15. Mai 2016 - 20. Mai 2016

Zusammenfassung
Seismix is an international symposium on seismic imaging that is held every two years. The first meeting was held at Cornell in 1984, and since that time, it has visited Canada, Australia, Finland, China, Spain and many other places around the world. The original motivation for Seismix came from a group of seismologists interested in pursuing national programs of multichannel seismic reflection profiling of continents and their margins. Notable examples include BIRPS in the UK, DEKORP in Germany, Lithoprobe in Canada and FIRE in Finland. In the last decade, Seismix has diversified from crustal reflection profiling to include most kinds of seismic imaging methods that can be applied to the crust (and mantle lithosphere to some extent). Thus, methods include those that use active sources or passive sources, and applications range from exploration through to the solid Earth. The emphasis is on new methods and their applications, and on advancing our understanding of crustal dynamics, structure and processes. The conference is unique in the way that it brings together the active/passive source community and those who work on solid Earth/exploration problems.

Zusammenfassung
Multidisciplinary landscape studies create a unique opportunity to trace cultural and environmental transformations and move us closer to understanding the distance that humanity have covered for the hundreds thousands years of its development. This is because the cultural “multi-layer structure” is an inherent feature of landscape, making it a kind of a palimpsest. We invite you to participate in the first CLC meeting, during which we will try to bring together the efforts of specialists representing numerous disciplines that investigate, interpret, or create landscapes. We will be talking about definitions and understanding of landscape-related issues among people from different cultural milieus, discuss the role of landscape studies in examining the human past, and analyse the contemporary perception of landscape and methods of its protection and transformation.

Zusammenfassung
The planetary community is invited to the first major international conference devoted specifically to Enceladus and the Mid-Sized Icy Satellites of Saturn. Through its array of instruments and global mapping opportunities, the Cassini mission has revolutionized our understanding of the Saturn system, and the surprisingly complex icy moons are no exception. The active jets of Enceladus are chief among the new discoveries. Others include color/thermal anomalies, equatorial ridges, satellite-derived rings, resurfacing and thermal relaxation, librations, and global fracture network surprises, to name just a few. The conference will be open to all scientific aspects of Enceladus and its neighboring moons. Topics include (but are not limited to) geology, geophysics, geochemistry and mineralogy, active jets and their properties and origins, formation and evolution, astrobiology, and future investigations of these bodies. Comparative planetology is encouraged! A major focus will be the new results from the 2015 Cassini encounters with Enceladus and the other icy moons. Contributions from Cassini, Voyager, and groundbased studies are welcome, as are suggestions for additional topics. The conference, in planning for almost two years, will feature invited speakers, contributed talks, and contributed posters; major reviews of key topics will also be presented. The conference will also lead to the production of a printed volume summarizing the findings of the conference, and encompassing the state of the art in our knowledge and wisdom concerning these amazing icy worlds.

Welcome to ECSA’s next major symposium, ECSA 56 Coastal systems in transition: From a 'natural' to an 'anthropogenically-modified' state, which will take place from the 4-7 September 2016 in Bremen, Germany. Humans are drivers of and affected by global change. Human-induced global climate and regional environmental change dramatically modify the structures and functions of coastal systems driving them into a new system state. The altered resource potentials and ecosystem services then, in turn, significantly affect the livelihoods of the population. Distinguishing between natural and anthropogenic control factors and quantifying their impacts is a major challenge in the investigation of hydrodynamic, sedimentological, biogeochemical, ecological and socioeconomic processes in the coastal zone. Inter- and transdisciplinary efforts are required to gain a profound understanding of these "novel" systems, which provides the basis for a sustainable management. ECSA 56 brings together a global multi-disciplinary community of researchers and professionals to discuss and address issues of outstanding scientific importance in the science and management of estuaries and coastal seas in this rapidly changing world.

Zusammenfassung
More than 60% of the world’s oil and 40% of the world’s gas reserves are held in carbonate reservoirs. Carbonates especially dominate fields in the Middle East with around 70% of oil and 90% of gas reserves found in these reservoirs. Carbonates accumulate predominately through the in situ growth and destruction of organisms, with transportation over relatively short distances. The nature of carbonate deposition, along with evolutionary changes in biota and primary mineralogy, results in the development of facies that can exhibit highly varying properties.
