[ID=667803] Zum Seitenanfang gehen
 OrtParis, Frankreich
 Zusammenfassung The year 2015 marks the 20th anniversary of the discovery of 51 Peg b, the first confirmed exoplanet around a Sun-like star. This detection has triggered extraordinary development in exoplanet research all around the world, through various observational techniques such as radial velocity variations, transit, microlensing, direct imaging and astrometry. Thereby, over the past twenty years, the increasing number of detected planets has revealed an extreme diversity of objects. As a consequence, research priorities are more and more moving from planet detection to planet characterization. Thus, the purpose of the 2015 IAP Conference is to propose a thorough review of the different classes of planets that comprise this diversity. The measurement of a planetary mass, mainly constrained with the radial velocity technique, represents generally the first fundamental parameter. For massive sub-stellar companions to stars, observations show a continuous mass function from Jupiter to brown dwarfs, which blur the traditional distinction between these objects and planets. At the low-mass end, the density obtained for transiting planets, by combining photometry with radial velocity information makes possible determination of whether the planet is a rocky body or a mini-Neptune. The radius of the orbit can allow predicting hot, temperate or icy planets. Evolution by migration or loss of atmosphere represents another source of diversity.

23.International Colloquium The Geoarchaeology of Mediterranean Islands 2015
 Termin 30. Jun 2015 → 02. Jul 2015
[ID=649193] Zum Seitenanfang gehen
 OrtCargase, Frankreich
 Zusammenfassung Aims of the colloquium: Situated between Europe, Africa and Asia, Mediterranean islands display unique palaeoenvironements and patterns of human occupation. Their physical properties (relief, coastal morphology, vegetation, etc.) are the long-term result of complex geological, tectonic, climatic and eustatic changes. In some cases, the current location and configuration of Mediterranean islands was dramatically different in the Pleistocene and even in the Early Holocene: Corsica and Sardinia, for example, until relatively recently formed a single island, and similar cases are found in the Tuscan archipelago, as well as the islands of the Aegean and Ionian seas. During the Epipaleolithic and the Neolithic, the shapes of the island coastlines and valley profiles have varied widely because of several natural factors, but also on account of the anthropogenic impacts on insular environments. The chronology, character, and scale of initial island colonization in the Mediterranean, continue to be the major topics of scientific debate, as are subsequent human impacts through time. By adopting a multidisciplinary approach, this colloquium aims to combine different approaches from the humanities, social sciences, and geosciences in order to assess long-term patterns of human-environmental interactions on Mediterranean islands during the Late Quaternary (the last 25 000 years).

 Zusammenfassung The use of water in hydraulic fracturing to unlock natural gas trapped in shale formations has brought the water-energy nexus to the fore. Extracting shale gas via hydraulic fracturing generally poses greater environmental challenges than conventional methods of gas extraction and is still perceived as a highly controversial process by many. It is therefore essential there is informed understanding among stakeholders using clear scientific evidence, transparency and consistent messages of this highly contentious issue. This conference will look at the perceived risks of shale gas extraction to the environment and the management of these risks. Speakers will also discuss the use of best available techniques (BAT) of produced and flow back waters, monitoring and management of extractive waste and integrated water management.

 Zusammenfassung As far as raw materials go, chert, obsidian and other knappable stones stand out as some of the most common materials in the archaeological record, and at some sites the only preserved material. They were used in almost every corner of the world, from the Palaeolithic up until today. Use of these materials even predates the appearance of our own species. Being so widespread both geographically as well as chronologically, this topic merits a global meeting of researchers to discuss and compare our findings. This conference will cover all aspects of knapped stone raw materials from geological origin, to mining, usage, and laboratory analyses on these materials. Although we expect that there will be more focus on chert and other microcrystalline quartz varieties, we also encourage presentations related to other knappable materials such as obsidian, quartz, quartzite, rhyolite and others. Papers will be accepted on any culture or time period. Whether you are a field archaeologist, laboratory researcher, ethnographer or a modern day knapper yourself, we look forward to hearing about your research.

66.3rd EAGE Workshop on Naturally Fractured Reservoirs
 Termin 01. Nov 2015 → 04. Nov 2015
[ID=715163] Zum Seitenanfang gehen
 OrtDubai, Vereinigte Arabische Emirate
 Zusammenfassung Naturally fractured reservoirs contain a major part of the world’s remaining hydrocarbon reserves, but their successful characterisation and development remains very challenging. Difficulties when characterising naturally fractured reservoirs are encountered across the entire G&G domain and include, but are not limited to, developing conceptual models for fracture formation, using appropriate seismic attributes, obtaining 3D fracture statistics from well logs, selecting adequate outcrop analogues, or building representative models for the rock matrix. These characterisation challenges manifest themselves as first-order uncertainties in the static geological model. Additional uncertainties arise when translating the static model into a dynamic reservoir simulation model. These uncertainties can include upscaling the fracture network to compute grid-based effective permeabilities, selecting the appropriate model concept for reservoir simulation (e.g. single-porosity modelling vs. dual-porosity or dual-permeability), or including geomechanical processes during production. Considering the wide range of uncertainties in both, the static and dynamic model, it is pertinent to calibrate models for naturally fractured reservoirs with static and dynamic data such that the models can be used to reliably support reservoir development decisions. This workshop will focus on the static and dynamic calibration of fractured reservoir models to reduce model uncertainty. The aim of this workshop is to introduce a variety of case studies from geophysics, geology, and reservoir engineering to discuss what needs to be done to increase our ability to build well-calibrated, and hence reliable, static and dynamic models for naturally fractured reservoirs. These examples are intended to support the existing and emerging calibration techniques presented, review appropriate data sets, outline lessons learnt, and define best practices for model calibration. The workshop will therefore provide an overview of the current state of the art and indicate areas for future improvement. In this context, the workshop will also try to translate academic research in the relevant fields to industry applications and ensure that information and insights from independent studies can be placed into a relevant framework or global context.

 Zusammenfassung The Biannual Symposium on Submarine Mass Movements and Their  Consequences (ISSMMTC) is the touchstone meeting for researchers in the field of seafloor mass instability. Since 2003 the symposium  has been held in Scandinavia, Europe, North America and Asia and has attracted a broad field of active researchers and encouraged and enabled many students to share their research and develop international connections. The symposium is currently administered under the umbrella of UNESCO grant IGCP-585 which aims to strengthen cooperation and promote the publication of scientific literature, promote fora that exchange ideas and facilitate knowledge transfer to developing countries, and improve the links between all the sectors with a stake in furthering knowledge of submarine mass movements.   The symposium has not yet been held in the Southern Hemisphere and what better place to start than New Zealand. New Zealand is a tectonically active and dynamic country with the 4th largest  EEZ in the world. The tectonic and sedimentary setting has resulted in numerous world class examples of offshore slope failure, from relatively small local scales posing tsunami hazards to coastal populations to continental margin scale collapses affecting subduction zone behaviour. In addition there are excellent examples of preserved mass transport deposits exposed onshore that can be studied in detail (and visited by participants of this symposium!). Conference themes include: - Fluids in slope instability - Geotechnical aspects of mass movement - Failure dynamics from landslide geomorphology - Tsunami generation from slope failure - Mass transport deposits in outcrop - Innovative techniques for studying mass movements - Earthquakes and submarine slope instabilities: preconditioning, triggering and paleo- seismology - Monitoring mass failure processes

Major data acquisition programs (seismic, core, logs) and production and surveillance data have increased our understanding of the reservoirs. This understanding is often limited to one field in the region. Sharing learnings and information of the same reservoir units between fields would be of extreme value for developing the region. The focus of this workshop is the understanding of the giant fields of Southern Iraq and to concentrate on field development topics. This workshop will bring the subsurface community of Southern Iraq together and will help to better develop these fields.

 OrtIstanbul, Türkei
 Zusammenfassung EAGE is planning a third Rock Physics Workshop to take place in Istanbul in November 2015, following the success of two previous workshops held in Dubai 2012 and in Oman 2014. Rock physics has traditionally been a niche field within geophysics, limited to experts who are well acquainted with experimental and theoretical research. Today, rock physics has become a significant part of interpreter’s quantitative workflow and plays an important role in the basin scale characterization of the subsurface, integrating both well log and seismic data analysis. In this edition, we would like to focus on the application of rock physics during exploration and production, for prospect evaluation and reservoir characterization. In particular, we would like to address how rock physics can improve the link between geophysical measurements and geological processes at various scales. The use of rock physics as a link between basin analysis and geophysics will facilitate to extrapolate properties away from the drilled wells in frontier areas. The workshop will provide key emphasis on rock physics applications at various scales, between disciplines, and at different stages during a field life cycle.

 Termin 15. Feb 2016 → 17. Jun 2016
[ID=628241] Zum Seitenanfang gehen
 OrtIsaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, , Großbritannien
 Zusammenfassung The Earth's mantle is almost entirely solid, but on geological timescales it convects vigorously, the well-known surface expression of this being plate tectonics. Although the basic thermodynamics of melt generation in these settings is well understood, how the melt is transported to the surface is not, despite several decades of work on the problem. Sophisticated mathematical techniques are needed to map an understanding of physics at the smallest scales to plate-tectonic scales. Seismology offers a way to image melt in the mantle, but development of new tools in inverse theory is required to extract that information. Models are cast as a series of coupled non-linear PDEs, which require advanced numerical techniques to solve. This programme will bring together a broad spectrum of mathematicians and solid Earth scientists to tackle these and other challenges in the area. Several workshops will take place during the programme. For full details please see www.newton.ac.uk/events.html.

 Zusammenfassung Seismix is an international symposium on seismic imaging that is held every two years. The first meeting was held at Cornell in 1984, and since that time, it has visited Canada, Australia, Finland, China, Spain and many other places around the world. The original motivation for Seismix came from a group of seismologists interested in pursuing national programs of multichannel seismic reflection profiling of continents and their margins. Notable examples include BIRPS in the UK, DEKORP in Germany, Lithoprobe in Canada and FIRE in Finland. In the last decade, Seismix has diversified from crustal reflection profiling to include most kinds of seismic imaging methods that can be applied to the crust (and mantle lithosphere to some extent). Thus, methods include those that use active sources or passive sources, and applications range from exploration through to the solid Earth. The emphasis is on new methods and their applications, and on advancing our understanding of crustal dynamics, structure and processes. The conference is unique in the way that it brings together the active/passive source community and those who work on solid Earth/exploration problems.
