Zusammenfassung: The Universidad de Colima, México has a long tradition of periodic scientific meetings devoted to the different aspects of recent studies of volcanism which take place every two-three years and have became a tradition. Volcán de Colima is the most active volcano of Mexico and for more than 10 years has been in a state of eruption with both effusive and explosive activity. It is with great pleasure that we invite you to join us in Colima during 2-6 February, 2009. We will provide a stimulating forum for your discussions and a convivial atmosphere in which to make acquaintances and renew old friendships.

Zusammenfassung: This School is intended to focus on fluid mechanical aspects, and is aimed at students who have already graduated in mathematics, physics or engineering, and who wish to undertake research in this broad area. It is intended to bring students rapidly to current research frontiers in the fluid mechanics of environmental hazards. The School will start with introductory and motivational lectures on the fundamentals of geophysical fluid dynamics, and on geophysical hazard and risk in atmosphere and ocean contexts, and will then focus on four specific environmental hazards: typhoons and tropical cyclones; monsoons and flooding; tsunamis; pollution of atmosphere, ocean and the urban environment.

Zusammenfassung: ERES 2009 is the seventh international conference in the series on Earthquake Resistant Engineering Structures organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology. The Meeting provides a unique forum for the discussion of basic and applied research in the various fields of earthquake engineering relevant to the design of structures.

Zusammenfassung: he Joint Assembly (JA) will be a meeting jointly organized by the American Geophysical Union (AGU.) and Canadian geoscience associations, including the Geological Association of Canada (GAC(R)), Mineralogical Association of Canada (MAC), Canadian Geophysical Union (CGU), and International Association of Hydrogeologists-Canadian National Chapter (IAH-CNC). Zusammenfassung: The chemistry of the Earth records detailed information about the way in which the Earth formed, reacted and changed to form the planet that we live on today. The secrets of planetary formation and clues about the evolution of life have always held a basic societal fascination. Topically, understanding the Earth's chemistry is essential in uncovering how the mineral and biological world interact, discovering new mineral and energy resources, finding safe drinking water supplies, understanding how and why climate is changing, and developing technologies to mitigate some of the damage that man has done to the planet.

'Our Volatile Planet' represents a topic central to all of these themes. Volatile elements and compounds, such as water, are those which have a tendency to exist in a vapour or gas phase, to boil or dissipate. Water is essential for life, controls planetary scale processes of subduction, earthquakes and even volcanic outpourings. Water forms beautiful mineral formations, transports the suns energy from the equator to the Polar Regions and, when polluted, kills. Our society is also volatile. Wars are fought over mineral resources, cities devastated by Earthquakes, and drought caused by changes in climate. Providing knowledge of Earths complex systems is essential if we are to balance society's needs with the available resources, changing climate and many and diverse, but fragile, ecosystems.

Goldschmidt 2009 brings together over 2000 of the worlds international experts in the chemistry of the Earth to present and debate breaking new work across these topics. It will be held in the Congress Center in Davos. This was the venue for the very successful 2002 meeting, and the Congress Center has now been enlarged in part to be able to accommodate conferences as large as ours.

Zusammenfassung: It is with great pleasure that the IAG Council announces the selection of the bid from the South African Spectroscopy Society to host the Geoanalysis 2009 meeting. What will be the 7th in the series of Geoanalysis conferences is to be held in September 2009 at a venue in the 3000 meter high Drakensberg Mountains of KwaZulu-Natal Province. Located at a distance of some 3 to 4 hours from Johannesburg, the Drakensberg Region has some of the most spectacular scenery in South Africa and has a well developed tradition of hosting national and international conferences at modern resort venues. The climate of Drakensberg during September is characterized by sunny days with cool to cold nights where rare late spring snow on the adjacent mountains can provide magnificent scenery.

Along side of the core themes of the Geoanalysis conference series, the 2009 meeting will also highlight topics of particular importance to the host country: the production of precious metals, assessments of economic ore reserves and the environmental issues being addressed by the mining industry.
