Zusammenfassung: The prevalence of multicore technologies has brought ubiquitous parallelism and a huge theoretical potential for compute-intensive tasks. In theory, advancements in technology bring us closer to the solution of the Grand Challenges in modern computing. In practice however, it is hard to achieve maximal throughput in the results and to exploit all available capabilities. Due to the inevitable paradigm shift towards multicore technologies, parallelism is now affecting all kinds of software development processes – from large-scale numerical simulation to desktop commodity applications. And parallelism is no longer restricted to well-balanced systems built of homogeneous nodes. In recent systems parallelism spreads over many systems levels including nodes, processors, cores, threads, registers, SIMD and vector units. Moreover, heterogeneity of the systems is growing on the node as well as on the chip level. Most applications and algorithms are not yet ready to utilize available capabilities and a tremendous effort is required to close the gap. Different technologies and processing models, non-adjusted interfaces, and incomplete tool chains complicate holistic programming approaches and impede programmer’s productivity. On the other hand, resource contention, data conflicts and hardware bottlenecks keep performance away from theoretical peak.

At the current state of the art in technologies and methodologies an interdisciplinary approach is required to tackle the obstacles in multicore computing. Only a comprehensive approach with contributions from computer science, applied mathematics, high performance computing, and engineering disciplines can face the multicore challenge. Compute- and memory-intensive applications can only benefit from the full hardware potential if all features on all system levels are taken into account in a holistic approach.

This conference aims to combine new aspects of multicore microprocessor technologies, parallel applications, numerical simulation, software development and tools. The primary goal is to bring together young researchers working in related fields. Contributions are welcome from all participating disciplines.

Zusammenfassung: The field of high performance computing has earned prominence through advances in electronic and integrated technologies. Current times are very exciting and the years to come will witness a proliferation in the use of parallel and distributed systems. The scientific and engineering application domains have a key role in shaping future research and development activities in academia andindustry, especially when the solution of large and complex problems must cope with tight timing schedules.

This annual workshop brings together researchers from computer science,applied mathematics and other application areas of high-performance computingto present, discuss and exchange ideas, results, work in progress and experiences in the area of parallel and distributed computing for problems in science and engineering applications and inter-disciplinary applications.

The purpose of the MAPREDUCE workshop, in conjonction with HPDC conference, is to provide a forum for discussing recent advances, identifying open issues, introducing developments and tools, and presenting applications and enhancements for MapReduce (or very similar) systems.

Zusammenfassung: Pervasive computing is emerging as the next paradigm for distributed and mobile computing through building systems of communicating miniaturized devices, sensors and actuators in which ambient, personalized trustworthy services built out of pervasive infrastructure and information are seamlessly available anywhere, anytime, and in all forms. By embedding ambient intelligence in everyday objects, our workplaces, our homes and even ourselves, pervasive computing and communications will enable a new breed of applications and systems which are composed of massive smart objects to create the environments that underpin a smart world.

Zusammenfassung: One of the most distinguishing requirements upon Information and Communication Technologies is today's ever-changing, highly open dynamic environments in which large-scale ICT systems are situated to operate. Challenges for ICT systems engineering immediately arise including, e.g., systems scalability, systems ultra-dependability, systems convergence against uncertainty and emergence, and so forth. Zusammenfassung: Recently, computational science has been offered the prospect of vast increases in capability, thanks to a paradigm shift in hardware architectures. The IT industry has sidestepped the bottlenecks it faced (memory, power, complexity) by opting for on-chip parallelism. This brought first the multi-core model, and now promises many-core as the future. In addition, we have a great opportunity in the tremendous computing power of graphics processors (GPUs). With this opportunity, however, comes the challenge of adapting the large toolbox of scientific computing to the unstoppable changes in computer architectures. The latest studies indicate that some algorithms have more potential than others for extracting performance from modern many-core architectures. A difficult task involves reformulating algorithms to adapt to the hardware in a resource-conscious way. This workshop will discuss the algorithms and their formulations for extracting performance of the modern architectures.
