 OrtAcademy of Mathematics and Systems, Chinese Academ, China
 Zusammenfassung The notion of multispace was introduced by F. Smarandache in 1969 under his idea of hybrid mathematics: combining different fields into a unifying field, which is closer to our real life, since we don.t have a homogeneous space, but many heterogeneous ones. Today, this idea is widely accepted by the world of sciences. S-Multispace is a qualitative notion and includes both metric and non-metric spaces. It is believed that the smarandache multispace with its multistructure is the best candidate for 21st century Theory of Everything in any domain. It unifies many knowledge fields. In a general definition, a smarandache multi-space is a finite or infinite (countable or uncountable) union of many spaces that have various structures. The spaces may overlap. A such multispace can be used, for example, in physics for the Unified Field Theory that tries to unite the gravitational, electromagnetic, weak and strong interactions. Other applications: multi-groups, multi-rings, geometric multispace.

 Zusammenfassung Computer-based methods for the capture, construction, representation, fitting, interrogation and manipulation of complicated surfaces have led to a wide interest in, and need for, the mathematics of surfaces and related curves. Many applications require the use of surface descriptions, especially in such fields as computer aided design and manufacturing, computer graphics and computer vision. The description of surfaces is also of interest in geographic information systems, multimedia, and many other areas of science and medicine. This diversity and the wide range of applicability of the subject have already enabled the IMA to hold thirteen very successful international conferences in the Mathematics of Surfaces series.
 Themen new developments in the capture, representation, manipulation, approximation, fitting, and design of surfaces, computational methods, mathematical principles, practical applications of surface mathematics in areas such as CAD, computer vision, computer graphics, geographic information systems, and architecture.

21.ICERM Public Lecture: On Growth and Form: Mathematics, Physics and Biology
 Beginn24. Sep 2013
[ID=551277] Zum Seitenanfang gehen
 OrtProvidence, Vereinigte Staaten
 Zusammenfassung The diversity of living forms led Darwin to state that it is "enough to drive the sanest man mad". How can we describe this variety? How can we understand the origin and evolution of these "endless forms most beautiful?" And how do these forms link to function and physiology at the organismic level and beyond? Mathematics, and geometry in particular, provides a natural language to express these questions and answer them. Motivated by biological observations on different scales from molecules to organisms to swarms, I will show how a combination of quantitative experiments, physical analogies, mathematical theories and computational models allow us to begin to unravel the mechanistic basis for aspects of morphogenesis and thence towards physiology, pathophysiology and biomimetics.

 Termin 27. Jan 2014 → 31. Jan 2014
[ID=553467] Zum Seitenanfang gehen
 OrtInstitute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM),, Vereinigte Staaten
 Zusammenfassung The theory of rough paths has established itself as a powerful tool to analyze a variety of stochastic systems that are too 'rough' for their solutions to exist in the class of functions that can be handled by classical analytical methods. The power of the theory resides in its ability to cleanly separate the probabilistic components from their purely analytic aspects. Recently, the theory has seen an explosion of new results that caused its scope to expand considerably. This workshop will bring together experts in the theory of rough paths with researchers working in related areas of mathematics (probability, PDEs/SDEs, analysis, etc) and sciences in general. [ID=553479] Zum Seitenanfang gehen
 OrtAmerican Institute of Mathematics, Palo Alto, Vereinigte Staaten
 Zusammenfassung The recent proof of the finite generation of the canonical ring is a major milestone in the Mori program for classifying higher dimensional varieties. The framework of the Mori program has been established in many different contexts, such as for log varieties, varieties with group actions, and rather surprisingly, for Brauer log pairs. These pairs arise naturally in the study of maximal orders and generic projective space bundles. The Mori program in the context of Brauer log pairs, which we call Brauer log MMP, has been completed in dimension two. The main focus for this workshop is to extend this work to dimension three and explore some applications. This workshop, sponsored by AIM and the NSF, will be devoted to the Mori program for Brauer log pairs in dimension three.

30.ICERM Semester Workshop: Information-Based Complexity and Stochastic Computation
 Termin 15. Sep 2014 → 19. Sep 2014
[ID=551242] Zum Seitenanfang gehen
 OrtProvidence, Vereinigte Staaten
 Zusammenfassung Information-based complexity (IBC) deals with the computational complexity of continuous problems for which available information is partial, priced and noisy. IBC provides a methodological background for proving the curse of dimensionality as well as provides various ways of vanguishing this curse.

Stochastic computation deals with computational problems that arise in probabilistic models and can be efficiently solved by randomized algorithms. Using IBC background, the complexity of stochastic ordinary (SDE) and partial differential (SPDE) equations have been studied.

Topics covered in the workshop will include: adaptive and nonlinear approximation for SPDEs, infinite-dimensional problems, inverse and ill- posed problems, quasi-Monte Carlo methods, PDEs with random coefficients, sparse/Smolyak grids, stochastic multi-level algorithms, SDEs and SPDEs with nonstandard coefficients, tractability of multivariate problems.

This workshop will bring together researchers from these different fields. The goal is to explore connections, learn and share techniques, and build bridges.

 Termin 29. Sep 2014 → 03. Okt 2014
[ID=551285] Zum Seitenanfang gehen
 OrtProvidence, Vereinigte Staaten
 Zusammenfassung The workshop is devoted to the following problem of fundamental importance throughout science and engineering: how to approximate, integrate, or optimize multivariate functions.

The breakthroughs demanded by high dimensional problems may be at hand. Good methods of approximation arise as solutions of optimization problems over certain function classes that are now well understood in small and modesty large dimensions.

In high dimensions, the appropriate models involve sparse representations, which give rise to issues in nonlinear approximation methods such as greedy approximation. High dimensional optimization problems become intractable to solve exactly, but substantial gains in efficiency can be made by allowing for a small probability of failure (probabilistic recovery guarantees), and by seeking approximate solutions (up to a pre-specified threshold) rather than exact solutions. The contemporary requirements of numerical analysis connect approximation, optimization, and probabilistic analysis.

The workshop will bring together leading experts in approximation, compressed sensing and optimization.

 Termin 27. Okt 2014 → 31. Okt 2014
[ID=551295] Zum Seitenanfang gehen
 OrtProvidence, Vereinigte Staaten
 Zusammenfassung Discrepancy theory deals with the problem of distributing points uniformly over some geometric object and evaluating the inevitably arising errors. The theory was ignited by such famous early results as Herman Weyl's equidistribution theorem and Klaus Roth's theorem on the irregularities of point distributions.

The subject has now grown into a broad field with deep connections to many areas such as number theory, combinatorics, approximation theory, harmonic analysis, and probability theory, in particular empirical and Gaussian processes. The computational aspects of the subject include searching for well-distributed sets and numerical integration rules. Despite years of research, many fundamental questions, especially in high dimensions, remain wide open, although several important advances have been achieved recently.

The participants of this workshop will share a wide range of views on topics related to discrepancy with an eye towards the recent developments in the subject. The workshop will bring together different communities working on various aspects of discrepancy theory. The exchange of ideas and approaches, the cross-fertilization of viewpoints, sharing the visions of near and far term goals of the field will be the highlight of the conference.
