This importance is reflected in the fact that companies, without the force of any regulations, start to measure their knowledge and intellectual capital, they even produce and externally publish intellectual capital statements; accounting guidelines are being developed and standards are being questioned and reviewed; and governments are beginning to measure the intellectual capital of cities, regions, and countries. Companies and investors alike are trying to measure their intellectual capital and the value of knowledge. However, it seems as if the field has reached a point of maturity where we need to address issues around taxonomies and research methodology. Zusammenfassung: The workshop aims to bring together researchers from different disciplines that are interested in the application of social network analysis tools and techniques in knowledge network research. As such, the workshop provides a platform: 1) to elaborate on frequently used and emerging research questions and 2) to evaluate methodology used and, 3) to compare results of different research settings. We welcome both theoretical and empirical papers that employ diverse methodologies and philosophical perspectives.

Zusammenfassung: Resource discovery is the process of identifying and locating existing resources that have a particular property. Machine-based resource discovery relies on crawling, clustering, and classifying resources discovered on the Web automatically. Resources are organized with respect to metadata that characterize their content (for data sources), their semantics (in terms of ontological classes and relationships), their characteristics (syntactical properties), their performance (with metrics and benchmarks), their quality (curation, reliability, trust), etc. Resource discovery systems allow the expression of queries to identify and locate resources that implement specific tasks.

The First International Workshop on Resource Discovery aims at bringing together researchers, developers, and practitioners to discuss research issues and experience in developing and deploying concepts, applications, and solutions addressing various issues related to resource discovery.

Zusammenfassung: After the birth of the World Wide Web, the Global Information Infrastructure is daily reality. In spite of the many applications in all domains of our societies: e-business, e-commerce, e-learning, e-science, and e-government, for instance, and in spite of the tremendous advances by engineers and scientists, the seamless integration of information and services remains a major challenge. The current shared vision for the future is one of semantically-rich information and service oriented architecture for global information systems. This vision is at the convergence of progress in technologies such as XML, Web services, RDF, OWL, of multimedia, multi modal, and multilingual information retrieval, and of distributed, mobile and ubiquitous computing.

The goal of the ISWBAS2008 conference is to provide an international forum for scientists, engineers, and managers in academia, industry, and government to address recent research results and to present and discuss their ideas, theories, technologies, systems, tools, applications, work in progress and experiences on all theoretical and practical issues arising in information and service integration.

Zusammenfassung: We are pleased to announce the 16th Document Recognition and Retrieval Conference (DRR), to be held 21-22 January 2009, in San Jose, CA, USA. DRR is an international conference for state-of-the-art research in document recognition and retrieval, for offline, online and web documents. The conference is part of the Electronic Imaging Symposium, which brings together researchers from various backgrounds related to electronic imaging for an exciting research event. The conference will include oral/poster presentations, invited talks and invited papers. Accepted papers will be published in DRR Proceedings. Zusammenfassung: This 2 day course is aimed at synthetic chemists working in both medicinal/discovery chemistry and process chemistry and will be taught by experienced organic chemists and professional information specialists. Participants will learn how to comprehensively search for specific items such as a compound and how to make it, and also to search more generally for precedent for a particular type. In addition, the use of databases to create retrosynthesis pathways will be covered. The patent literature is particularly important to industrial chemists and three sections will focus on patent searching. The course will also cover searching for information such as analytical and safety data, costings and supplier information.

Zusammenfassung: The School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina is pleased to announce our second digital curation curriculum symposium. DigCCurr 2009: Digital Curation Practice, Promise and Prospects is part of the Preserving Access to Our Digital Future: Building an International Digital Curation Curriculum (DigCCurr) project. DigCCurr is a three-year (2006-2009), Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)-funded collaboration between SILS and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The primary goals of the DigCCurr project are to develop a graduate-level curricular framework, course modules, and experiential components to prepare students for digital curation in various environments. DigCCurr initiatives in support of this goal are informed by representatives from the project’s collaborating institutions as well as an Advisory Board of experts from Australia, Canada, Italy, the Netherland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.
