 Dates 31 Mai 2015 → 05 Jui 2015
[ID=648517] Haut de la page
 LieuEaston, États-Unis
 Résumé The new Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on "Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage" will create a new forum for discussion at the frontiers of carbon management research, including fundamental scientific studies of CO2 interactions with novel materials for Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) as well as science policy essential for the deployment of CCUS. Predictions of global energy usage suggest a continued increase in carbon emissions and rising concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere unless major changes are made to the way energy is produced and used. Thus, CCUS is one of the most urgent technological and societal challenges faced by humanity. Until now, these technologies have been developed independently of one another, which has resulted in complex and economically challenged designs without much discussion on the societal issues for their implementation. Thus, a venue for truly multi-disciplinary, multi-dimensional discussion is critical to provide transformative research directions in CCUS. The GRC on CCUS will facilitate research collaborations that effectively cross the boundaries of the natural sciences, engineering, and the social and economic sciences to develop new understanding, theories, models and technologies as well as assessment tools for the developed technologies and their implementation plans for global communities. Discussion of emerging ideas and findings in this area will stimulate cutting edge research in the field, and eventually contribute to new approaches to capture and safely store anthropogenic CO2, while investigating the CO2 conversion to chemicals and fuels as one of the long-term alternatives. Topics will include a full range of materials studies involving chemical and physical interactions with CO2 at multi- time and spatial scales ranging from molecular level to geological scales, with particular emphasis on their interrelations with the current and novel energy conversion systems. The GRC will also include the study of science policy. While some of the CCUS technologies are still immature for detailed economic or regulatory discussions, there are a number of technologies (e.g., CO2 capture using MEA solvents, enhanced oil recovery using CO2 and subsequent CO2 storage in depleted oil reservoir) which are currently being demonstrated in large scale and these cases studies will allow valuable regulatory and policy discussions. Of course, being a science conference we aim to focus the discussion on the interplay of policy with science and technology.

 Résumé ECSA 55 brings together a global multi-disciplinary community of researchers and professionals to discuss and address issues of outstanding scientific importance in the science and management of estuaries and coastal seas in this rapidly changing world. ECSA 55 will focus on learning lessons from the past, discussing the current and forecasting for the future, spanning environmental, anthropogenic and climatic impacts on estuaries and coastal seas across the globe. ECSA 55 will be held in London on the banks of the Thames Estuary, a heavily modified, industrial megacity estuary. As with all megacity estuaries, the Thames is a valuable resource which faces competing, and often conflicting socio-economic and environmental demands. The need to balance these demands in a complex environment, whilst confronting the consequences of climate change, requires innovative multi-sectoral management approaches based on excellent and fit-for-purpose science.

67.IPW8 — 8th International Phosphorus Workshop
 Dates 12 Sep 2016 → 16 Sep 2016
[ID=665473] Haut de la page
 LieuRostock, Allemagne
 Résumé Without major shifts in the global use of phosphorus (P) towards greater sustainability and efficiency there will soon be drastic decreases in its availability. The consequences of a worldwide limited supply of P are already being felt, in particular as dramatic increases in the price of P-based fertilizers. Together with a partially limited availability and the improper use of P inventories in soils, this can, in the long-term, jeopardize supplies of food to the world population and raw materials to the economy. Furthermore, inefficient P use may have significant environmental impacts: the entry of large amounts of unused phosphorus into matter cycles, for example via agricultural runoff, can lead to an over-fertilisation that disrupts the balance of the entire system. Consequently, strategies are urgently needed that through the efficient use of P will minimise the rapid depletion of P stores and close matter cycles.
