12 Nov 2008; London, Royaume-Uni

Résumé: Carbon Capture and Storage is the most exciting proposition for reducing emissions and tackling climate change across a broad range of industries. Institute members throughout the world are working on challenging R&D projects to bring the technology into commercial reality. In order for the technology to develop engineers need to take the lead in ensuring the public accept this emerging technology by addressing key issues with carbon dioxide capture, transmission and sub surface sequestration. The aim of this seminar is to explore the technologies available to design power plants for carbon capture, the technologies for the capture process itself and the provisions will allow carbon capture to be installed at a later date, transportation options for carbon dioxide and the technology and options for storage of carbon dioxide.

Résumé: Water is essential for human health as it is closely linked with our body. However, data from UNICEF has shown more than 2.6 billion which is forty percent of the world’s population experience lack of basic sanitation facilities and safe drinking water sources. These situation have resulted illness and deaths of children caused by diarrhea and other sanitation-related disease. Not only is health related disease attacking children, but also lack of education. Children, in particular girls are too busy fetching water which discourage them of good education. In advance, poor people will encounter lack of productivity which in advance cause national economic suffers. It is vital then to improve water supplies and sanitation facilities in communities, and to promote safe hygiene practices as well.

This is especially crucial for a maritime nations like Malaysia. Today, increasing human activities such as over-fishing, coastal development, pollution, introduction of exotic species and climate change have caused significant damage that could pose a serious threat to this fragile environment.

Marine resource management has become one of the most challenging problems faced by nations worldwide. Transboundary and integrated marine resource management strategies are crucial to ensure the future sustainability of the ecosystem. Hence it is timely to initiate this International Conference on Marine Ecosystem which focuses on discussing and addressing issues related to challanges in maintaining the sustainability of the ecosystem. This conference offers an opportunity for marine experts to share and explore cutting edge technology and knowledge in marine sciences to ensure long term stability of this natural heritage.
