There is consensus within the international scientific community that geological repositories can provide the necessary long-term safety and security to isolate long-lived waste from the human environment over extended timescales. Whilst it is feasible to construct these repositories using current technologies, challenges remain in many countries to the development of geological repositories, including building and maintaining public confidence, the availability of skilled staff, and the transfer of information and expertise. The Seventh International Conference on Geological Repositories (ICGR-7) will take place on 27-31 May 2024 in Busan, Korea. The event will bring together high-level decision-makers from regulatory and local government bodies, waste management organisations and public stakeholder communities to review current perspectives of geological repository development.

Moving forward from the pandemic we are finally able to return to a biannual schedule and we are eager to organize the next edition of the conference. NEA analysis highlights that meeting global net zero targets necessitates a tripling of installed nuclear capacity by 2050. Concurrently, nuclear new build has become a top priority in several OECD and NEA member countries, which now face significant challenges in part due to years of inactivity and evolving policy, industrial, and regulatory contexts. The second high-level conference will convene senior government officials and industry executives to address the challenges of preparing for nuclear new build and share recent experiences to pinpoint solutions to deliver new nuclear construction at the scale and pace required to meet net zero targets.

Nuclear Enabling a Net Zero World

Over the past two decades, the safety case has become a powerful and essential tool to support decision making at every stage of a geological disposal programme. Now, an increasing number of national programmes are advancing towards licensing, opening the door to the concrete realisation of their deep geological repository (DGR) for high-level radioactive waste. This achievement marks the culmination of the evolution and periodic updating of the safety case as an iterative process of site characterisation, design development and demonstration, RD&D, safety assessment and integration, generally spanning over multiple decades, accompanied by regulatory reviews and ongoing communication with involved stakeholders. During this process the entire lifecycle of the waste - from its generation to its ultimate disposal - is duly considered. Of particular importance is the embedding of optimisation within the process, so as to achieve safety, technical feasibility, sustainability and to fulfil stakeholder expectations and requirements.

The maturity of the safety case concept as developed by the NEA Integration Group for the Safety Case (IGSC) and national and international programmes has reached a high level, providing the basis to explore new domains, such as gathering and using experience obtained from already-operating repositories for other types of radioactive waste, including insights on operational issues and waste acceptance, as well as transfering the safety case methodologies to other disposal concepts.

The Nuclear Materials Conference (NuMat) was created in 2012 in association with the Journal of Nuclear Materials to serve as an umbrella for international meetings on nuclear materials science related to fission and fusion reactors and the overall nuclear fuel cycle. Following on from NuMat 2022 in Ghent, Belgium, where over 500 delegates presented their work, NuMat 2024 will focus on broad topics of interest to the nuclear materials community centered around nuclear fuels, structural materials, and fundamental & applied radiation effects in metals, ceramics, polymers, and functional materials. For the 2024 meeting, three additional plenary sessions will cover the rapidly growing status of nuclear power in Southeast Asia. Two tracks will focus on fuels, two on structural materials, and one on radiation effects and damage in other types of nuclear materials. There will be seven plenary speakers, plus an opening plenary from the 2024 recipient of the Robert Cahn award, and a presentation from the best paper prize recipient from the Journal of Nuclear Materials.

NURER conferences have gained international importance, because of their unique character of bringing together the nuclear and renewable energy communities in the same forum for mutual understanding. Earlier conferences have been held in Ankara (Turkey, 2009, 2010), Istanbul (Turkey, 2012), Antalya (Türkiye, 2014), Hefei (China, 2016) and Jeju (Korea, 2018). Antalya has been chosen to host NURER2024 as the top tourism city with its unique nature and deep blue sea. Selected papers presented at NURER 2024 will be invited to be published in the Kerntechnik, International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, International Journal of Renewable Energy Research, International Journal of Energy for a Clean Environment and the International Journal of Energy Studies. The focus of the Clay Conference is clay as host rock for geological disposal of radioactive waste and the use of compacted swelling clays as an engineered barrier component. Considering design, construction, operation and post-closure, the Clay Conference provides a unique networking platform for sharing scientific and technological knowledge. This involves gathering together experienced specialists and newcomers from various disciplines related to clays, as well as scientists and technicians from organisations engaged in radioactive waste disposal or in other uses of the subsurface in which clay barriers play an important role. We particularly encourage young scientists in all fields of nuclear safety and waste management to present their research findings at the Clay Conference 2024.
