Résumé: Resource discovery is the process of identifying and locating existing resources that have a particular property. Machine-based resource discovery relies on crawling, clustering, and classifying resources discovered on the Web automatically. Resources are organized with respect to metadata that characterize their content (for data sources), their semantics (in terms of ontological classes and relationships), their characteristics (syntactical properties), their performance (with metrics and benchmarks), their quality (curation, reliability, trust), etc. Resource discovery systems allow the expression of queries to identify and locate resources that implement specific tasks.

The First International Workshop on Resource Discovery aims at bringing together researchers, developers, and practitioners to discuss research issues and experience in developing and deploying concepts, applications, and solutions addressing various issues related to resource discovery.

Résumé: WSDM (pronounced 'wisdom') is a young ACM conference intended to be the publication venue for research in the areas of search and data mining. Indeed, the pace of innovation in these areas prevents proper coverage by conferences of broader scope. The high attendance at the first WSDM, held at Stanford University in February of 2008, is a confirmation of this trend.

WSDM invites original, high quality submissions related to search and data mining on the Web, with an emphasis on practical but principled novel models of search and retrieval, algorithm design and analysis, economics implications, and in­depth experimental analysis of accuracy and performance.

Résumé: Since the end of the Cold War, the threat of large scale wars has been substituted by new threats: terrorism, organised crime, trafficking, smuggling, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. To react to them, a security strategy is necessary, but in order to be effective it requires several instruments, including technological tools. Consequently, research and development in the field of security is proving to be an ever-expanding field all over the world.

In the last few years, several public initiatives involving data mining in security research have been proposed both in the USA and in Europe, after a series of European Commission initiatives.

The International Conference on Data Mining started in 1999 and since then has evolved to take into account these new initiatives. In fact, data mining is seen more and more not only as a key technology in business, engineering and science but as one of the key features in security. To stress that all these technologies must be seen as a way to improve not only the security of citizens but also their freedom, special attention will be given to data protection research issues.

Résumé: In this conference we aim to bring together academics and practitioners working in the fields of data analysis, business analytics and business intelligence. High quality research papers and case studies are invited for presentation.
