Résumé: This Workshop aims at providing a forum for material scientists, chemists and physicists where to debate about the state of the art and the perspectives of the photonic materials based on rare earth ions. Four Focus Sessions will be specifically devoted to the following topics:

White light generation;

Wavelength conversion for efficient photovoltaic systems;

Rare earth doped photonic crystals and microstructured fibers;

Synthesis and application of rare earth doped nanoparticles.

Résumé: The 2010 Symposium “SiO2, Advanced Dielectrics and Related Devices” is the 8th edition of an international forum on the science and technology of silica-based systems, also including new related dielectrics and device applications.

Résumé: Continuing the series of alternative and very informal meetings at this venue, the Cambridge University Theory of Condensed Matter group is organizing a sixth International Workshop to discuss the development and application of the continuum quantum Monte Carlo method in condensed matter physics and quantum chemistry. The conference will take place in our 16th Century monastery in the mediaeval high mountain village of Vallico Sotto (in the Tuscan Apuan Alps near the beautiful Italian city of Lucca).

Résumé: The fifth international summer school in the series "Quantum Monte Carlo and the CASINO program" will take place during August 2010 at the TTI monastery in the Tuscan Apuan Alps in Italy, organized and hosted by members of Cambridge University physics department's Theory of Condensed Matter Group. The aim of the school is to give students a thorough introduction to quantum Monte Carlo as a method for performing high-quality calculations of the electronic structure of atoms, molecules, and materials. The course is designed for young quantum chemists or theoretical physicists who have no previous experience with this technique, though anyone interested is welcome to take part.

Résumé: The purpose of this Workshop at the interface of material science and nonlinear dynamics is to bring together researchers with different backgrounds to discuss the most recent developments in heat and charge transport in nanoscale systems. The workshop will serve as a forum to promote free exchange of ideas as well as international collaborations and to stimulate new insights into nanoscale transport phenomena.
