Résumé: The spread of infectious diseases remains a serious medical burden around the world, causing an estimated 15 million deaths each year. The emergence or re-emergence of viruses such as SARS, avian influenza, HIV-AIDS, Lyme disease, West Nile virus, and the evolution of previously known strains which develop resistance to specific drugs represent few examples of the serious problems that public health and medical science research need to address. Next to the tremendous advances in modern medicine and health sciences, epidemic models aided by computer simulations and information technologies represent an increasingly important tool for the understanding of transmission dynamics, and the analysis of epidemic patterns. Thanks to the increased computational power and innovative use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), sophisticated modeling approaches informed by realistic and detailed data sets are now feasible and aim at predicting a variety of possible scenarios, evaluating treatment and control strategies, helping and supporting the decision process at the scientific, medical and public health level.

The aim of the Workshop is to bring together experts in the field of infectious disease modeling to compare, evaluate and assess the recent advances reached with the use of sophisticate modeling, computational approaches, and ICT applications, highlighting the results they can provide and the different questions they can address, and bridging with the actual implications from a public health perspective.

Résumé: To tackle these illnesses, the cooperation of modelers, mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists, and others, and of researchers from the medical community is absolutely essential. Modeling is important because it gives important insight into the method of treatment. In the case of HIV/AIDS, for example, mathematical modeling indicated that a combination of both protease inhibitors and reverse transcriptase inhibitors would be far more effective than any one of these two drugs. The purpose of this conference is to bring all the people working in the area of epidemiology under one roof and encourage mutual interaction.

Résumé: This workshop aims at gathering people from various areas dealing with probabilistic aspects of the occurence and the repetition of rare events. The following themes will be covered: Entropy, hitting and return times in ergid theory; Sequence alignment and occurrence of words in biological sequences; Occurrence and matching of patterns in stochastic processes and random fields; Pattern matching and data compression in information theory. There will be three minicourses (ergodic theory, information theory and mathematical biology) and around 15 one hour lectures.

Résumé: A multitude of biological phenomena are described at multiple levels. What are the commonalities and differences between neuroscience, evolutionary biology, molecular biology and ecology in this regard? How can mathematics help in describing these phenomena?

Résumé: Following 2 previous Noise in Life meetings in Spain (2006) and Germany (2007), "Noise in Life 2009" will focus on cell signaling, regulation of gene expression and neuronal dynamics. There is a nice balance between these three topics to make for an exciting meeting which will improve our understanding of the emergence of mesoscopic dynamics in cell physiology. We will combine communities from the biosciences, nonlinear dynamics, statistical physics, applied mathematics and scientific computing, and gather together expertise in realistic modeling, multi-scale simulations and experimental biology.

Résumé: The international Society for Mathematical Biology (SMB) and the Chinese Society for Mathematical Biology (CSMB) will hold a historical joint mathematical, theoretical and computational biology meeting in Hangzhou, the most beautiful and poetic city of China, June 14-17, 2009. This precedence-setting joint SMB-CSMB international gathering will be hosted by Zhejiang University , one of the oldest, largest and most prestigious universities in China . The themes of the conference will include most mainstream topics in mathematical and computational biology and medicine. It is hoped that this meeting will seed many timely and long lasting east-west collaborations. The SMB president, Professor Avner Friedman, and the vice-president of Zhejiang University , Professor Jun Zhu, will co-chair this joint meeting.

Résumé: The aim of this programme will be to debate and provide contributions from state of the art mathematical techniques for galvanising the wider research community into focused action on the emerging issues of applying mathematics and computational science to develop multi-scale computational models of physiological systems.

Résumé: Predicting physiological behaviour from experimental data combined with environmental influences is a compelling, but unfulfilled, goal of post-genomic biology. This undeniably ambitious goal is the aim of the Physiome Project and its subset the Cardiome Project which is an international effort to build a biophysically based multi-scale mathematical model of the heart. To achieve this goal requires further development of the current generation of advanced cardiac models which span an already diverse set of mathematical representations from stochastic sub-cellular regulation models to whole organ based sets of coupled partial differential equations. The focus of this programme will be on the development and application of the mathematical techniques which underpin the ongoing extension of this approach.
