1.haut de la page[ID=254957]School — Model and Data Hierarchies for Simulating and Understanding Climate
08 Mar 2010 → 11 Jui 2010; Los Angeles, CA, États-Unis

Résumé: Simulation has greatly advanced climate science, but not sufficiently to the profit of theory and understanding. How can simulation better advance climate science and what mathematical issues does this raise? Our hypothesis is that the development of climate science (i.e., theory and understanding) will be best served by focusing computational and intellectual resources on model and data hierarchies. By bringing together physicists, mathematicians, statisticians, engineers and climate-scientists, and focusing on several themes that reach across scales and scientific methodologies, our program will provide a framework for advancing our use of hierarchical methods in our attempt to understand the climate system.

There will be an active program of research activities, seminars and workshops throughout the March 8 - June 11, 2010 period and core participants will be in residence at IPAM for fourteen weeks. The program will open with tutorials, and will be punctuated by four major workshops and a culminating workshop.

11 Aou 2010 → 22 Dec 2010; Cambridge, Royaume-Uni
Organisateur: Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge

Résumé: Our best estimates of future climate are based on the use of complex computer models that do not explicitly resolve the wide variety of spatio-temporal scales making up Earth's climate system. The non-linearity of the governing physical processes allows energy transfer between different scales, and many aspects of this complex behaviour can be represented by stochastic models. However, the theoretical basis for so doing is far from complete. Many uncertainties remain in predictions derived from climate models, yet governments are increasingly reliant on model predictions to inform mitigation and adaptation strategies. An overarching aim of climate scientists is to reduce the uncertainty in climate predictions and produce credible assessments of model accuracy. Several workshops will take place during this program.

27.haut de la page[ID=308995]CCMI '11 — Climate Change and the Minerals Industry '11
11 Mai 2011 → 12 Mai 2011; Falmouth, Royaume-Uni

Résumé: We currently face a public debate on climate change. On one side stand those who oppose the mere notion of man-induced climate change. On the other there is a strong faction that, in its extreme, prophesises a near-future 'doomsday'. In the middle stands a community that would like to see a sound discussion and actual proofs going beyond unproven climate modelling.

It would be naive to think that modern industrialised societies play no part in climate change. The minerals industry is one of the largest producers of carbon dioxide, and the need to reduce emissions, coupled with the global recession, is having a huge economic impact.

Until it is proven whether climate change is human-induced or not, legislation and common-sense demand that carbon emissions be reduced, particularly from high CO2 producers such as the minerals industry.
