Résumé: The OSA presents a new meeting in the area of optics for solar energy. The focus on the optics includes their design, modeling, integration of novel materials, manufacture, testing, deployment in the field, economic considerations, and field results. The goal of this meeting is to bring together the researchers, engineers, and managers developing and using optics for the generation of solar energy to encourage active discussion. All forms of solar energy generation, transmission, and storage from thermal to photovoltaic to novel methods will be covered in this forum. The program will highlight the solar energy field through keynote and invited speakers spanning the technology, modeling, public policy, and financial areas.

Résumé: A global challenge is avoiding negative effects from the current energy system on climate, environment and health and to find ways to replace fossil fuel supply. New materials can contribute to a positive development in this direction in several ways, for instance by influencing the energy efficiency of industrial production and of household energy use (e.g., through fuel cells, catalysis, reduced friction losses), and by offering schemes to clean up harmful emissions resulting from various energy technologies. Materials are important to efficient harvesting of sun light, harvesting energy from temperature gradients with thermoelectric materials, providing energy storage technology e.g. in batteries and via hydrogen storage, and enabling light-weight materials for transportation. Materials are central to every energy technology; the future will place increasing demands on materials performance with respect to extremes in stress, strain, temperature, pressure, chemical reactivity, photon or radiation flux, and electric or magnetic fields. The programme of this conference will cover current topics and recent progress in the science and technology of energy and new materials, including the nanoscale origin of macroscopic properties. In detail all aspects of materials for energy production and conversion, energy storage, energy transport, and energy saving will be addressed.

Résumé: Wind energy is now an established means of alternative energy generation. Wind energy farms are a regular feature of the landscape in may countries, and large off shore wind turbine farms are being raised in many places as well. However, the hunt for more efficient means of wind energy generation continues. This seminar focuses on the challenges for Physics and Engineering surrounding materials technology, tribology and mechanical sciences. In addition, the mechanics of the drive trains and energy conversion systems play a key role in the efficiency of the wind power plant. In the move to the offshore environment, maintenance becomes a driving factor along with corrosion and other features associated with surfaces. The seminar aims to identify the key challenges for future development and target areas for future research and development investment.
