This meeting aims to offer a more practical approach where new scientific ventures are beginning to give some solutions to those problems. The meeting is aimed at university and industrial scientists and engineers working in the sustainable energy field. Sustainable energy is one of the main areas identified by research councils for support and the meeting will give an opportunity for academics and industrialists to seek new collaborations for fundamental and applied research in this area. For this reason, speakers will all give a non-specialist level overview of their work and outline areas where further work is urgently required. A long luncheon break, a Poster display and short 5 minute talks by representatives from energy-based companies will be included in the day’s events.

Résumé: Saudi Arabia's water and power industry represents a challenge on a scale unknown anywhere else in the world and the Saudi Arabian government has undertaken an ambitious programme of reforms in this sector.

Building on last year's success, SWPF 2008 is dedicated to companies and investors aiming to capitalise on additional 30 GW of power generating capacity targeted by the Saudi Arabia's Water and Electricity Ministry for 2020. This figure will double the current installed capacity of 29.1 GW at a cost of an estimated US $ 90-100 Billion. In addition, Saudi Arabia's state-owned Saline Water Conversion Corp. (SWCC) has estimated that through 2020, the country will need to spend US $ 50 Billion on water projects, many integrated with new power generation capacity, in order to meet the Kingdom's equally rapidly growing water demand.

Résumé: Carbon Capture and Storage is the most exciting proposition for reducing emissions and tackling climate change across a broad range of industries. Institute members throughout the world are working on challenging R&D projects to bring the technology into commercial reality. In order for the technology to develop engineers need to take the lead in ensuring the public accept this emerging technology by addressing key issues with carbon dioxide capture, transmission and sub surface sequestration. The aim of this seminar is to explore the technologies available to design power plants for carbon capture, the technologies for the capture process itself and the provisions will allow carbon capture to be installed at a later date, transportation options for carbon dioxide and the technology and options for storage of carbon dioxide.

Résumé: Bis 2020 soll der Anteil regenerativer Energien an der Stromerzeugung in Deutschland nach einem Gesetzentwurf der Bundesregierung auf 25 bis 30 Prozent ansteigen. Um diese Ziele zu erreichen, muss ein intelligenter Mix verschiedener Energieträger zum Einsatz kommen. Welche Ausbaupotentiale für Wind- und Sonnenergie in Deutschland bestehen, stellt Prof. Dr. Jürgen Schmid, ISET e.V., Kassel dar. Derzeit boomt weltweit vor allem die Solarwirtschaft; ob Solarstrom auch in Deutschland eine Ressource mit Zukunft ist, hinterfragt Prof. Dr. Eike R. Weber, Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energie-systeme (ISE), Freiburg. Weil Solar- und Windenergie periodisch anfallen, ergibt sich einerseits die Notwendigkeit, weitere Quellen für die Grundlast zu erschließen: Die mögliche Rolle von Biogas in künftigen Energieversorgungssystemen erörtert Ulrich Schmack, Schmack Biogas AG, Schwandorf. Ob zum anderen neuartige Speichersy-steme die System- und Marktintegration von Regenerativstrom erleichtern, ist Thema des Vortrags von Dr. Mario Ragwitz vom Fraunhofer-Institut für System- Innovations-forschung, Karlsruhe. Eine regenerative Stromwirtschaft wird in jedem Fall eine stärke-re Dezentralisierung der Stromerzeugung zur Folge haben. Prof. Dr. Armin Schnettler informiert, welche Anforderungen sich dabei an die Stromnetze und deren Führung ergeben. Die Sicht des Regulierers auf die erforderlichen Erweiterungen und Umstruk-turierungen der Energienetze schildert Dipl. Phys. Fabian Scharf , Bundesnetzagentur.

The conference brings together leading experts from around the world to discuss the economic and environmental opportunities for decentralised energy, highlighting leading edge technological advances and policy issues related to electricity generation and delivery.

The conference convenes over one and a half days. The first day is dedicated to advances in decentralised energy technology, with a special focus on solutions to sustainability. The second day is exclusively given over to issues of energy policy, programs and markets.

The conference concludes with an optional half day excursion to the CSIRO Energy Centre in Newcastle, a state-of-the-art facility featuring award winning, innovative energy efficient building design, showcasing many examples of distributed generation and energy management built in. It is also the national headquarters of CSIRO Division of Energy Technology and the Energy Transformed National Research Flagship and home to the National Solar Energy Centre.

Résumé: Der wachsende Einsatz vor allem biogener Energieträger wirft vermehrt die Frage auf, in welcher Form solche Energieträger zum Einsatz kommen sollen. Die bestehende Infrastruktur ist in weiten Teilen für den Transport von Erd- oder Biogas konzipiert. Aber auch Wasserstoff als mögliche Basis einer zukünftigen Energieversorgung verlangt nach neuen Vergasungstechnologien, ob mit Kohle oder Biomasse als Aus-gangsstoff. Von einem „zweiten Frühling“ der Wirbelschichttechnologie ist in diesem Zusammenhang bereits die Rede. Dipl.-Ing. Ralf Abraham, Uhde GmbH, Dortmund, stellt den Status quo und die Perspektiven der Wirbelschichttechnologie vor. Dr.-Ing. Reinhard Rauch informiert über ein an der TU Wien entwickelte neuartige Wirbel-schicht-Dampfvergasung. Doch es gibt auch Alternativen zur Wirbelschicht: Festbett-vergaser für Kohle und Ersatzbrennstoffe sind Thema des Vortrags von Dipl.-Ing. Os-man Turna von der Lurgi GmbH, Frankfurt am Main. Die Flugstrom-Druckvergasung schließlich ist ein aktueller Trend, den Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Kolb, Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH, vorstellt. Die Moderation des Kolloquiums übernimmt Prof. Dr.-Ing.
