Résumé: We are at the dawn of the nanotechnology era, where scientific and technological advancements in many fields strongly demand the investigation of problems involving small or multiple scales. In such problems, the hydrodynamic theory is often invalid, and one has to apply the more fundamental laws of physics, such as kinetic theory (Boltzmann equation), molecular dynamics (Newton’s second law or the Liouville equation), or even quantum mechanics (Schrodinger equation). This requires the development of new mathematical and computational methods for physical laws at these scales, or a mixture of them, which is facilitated by the improvements of modern computers. Mathematical understanding of the scaling limit from one scale to another plays an important role, and interweaves with the development of new multiscale computational methods. This program will focus on the mathematical analysis, computational challenges and new applications of quantum and kinetic transport theory. It will invite both senior leading figures and young researchers in these directions. Besides applied mathematicians, special attention will be paid to invite researchers in other fields in science and engineering, representing academic, national lab and industrial research.

Résumé: Foundations of Nanoscience is a yearly conference on foundations of nanoscience, maintaining the highest scientific standards. Self-assembly is the central theme of the conference. Topics include self-assembled architectures and devices, at scales ranging from nano-scale to meso-scale. Methodologies include both experimental as well as theoretical approaches. The conference spans traditional disciplines including chemistry, biochemistry, physics, computer science, mathematics, and various engineering disciplines including MEMS.

Résumé: Smart materials can be defined as materials that sense and react to environmental conditions or stimuli (e.g. mechanical, chemical, electrical, or magnetic signals). In the last decade, a wide range of novel smart materials have been produced for aerospace, transportation, telecommunications, and domestic applications. Furthermore there is increased activity in integrating smart materials with nanotechnology to develop novel materials for the applications in biomaterials, sensors, actuators, and textiles. Nanotechnology would permit control of matter at the level of atoms and molecules which would form the building blocks of smart materials.Smart materials are thus evolving from traditional fiber reinforced composite through functionally graded materials to the current nanotechnologically grown materials. Résumé: Powders & Grains is an international scientific conference held every 4 years that brings together engineers and physicists interested in the micro-mechanics of granular media. The conference is organized under the auspices of the Association pour I'Etude de la Micromecanique des Milieux Granulaires (AEMMG).

Résumé: The ISACC 2009 will promote the growth and exchange of scientific information on the structure and properties of nuclear, atomic, molecular, biological and complex cluster systems studied primarily by means of photonic, electronic, heavy particle and atomic collisions. In the symposium, particular attention will be devoted to dynamical phenomena, many-body effects taking place in clusters, nanostructures, molecular and biological systems, which include problems of fusion and fission, fragmentation, collective electron excitations, phase transitions and many more. Both experimental and theoretical aspects of cluster physics uniquely placed between nuclear physics on one hand and atomic, molecular and solid state physics on the other will be subject of the symposium.
