Résumé: The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is partnering with The New York Academy of Sciences for the 2nd year to host a half-day symposium to evaluate progress in public health and human rights on the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

On December 10, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the first international recognition that human rights are absolute and inclusive of all, and that they should concern the entire international community. This doctrine has served as the foundation of international human rights law, and it continues to inspire international human rights treaties and declarations, regional conventions, and national constitutions.

Sadly, the work of the Declaration is far from finished. Some of the world's most neglected populations suffer the worst human rights abrogations, as well as the added burdens of disease and malnutrition. Where human rights are ignored, health care tends to be unequal, inadequate, or nonexistent.

Please join us as we examine the progress we have made in the 60 years since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights—and as we look ahead to navigating the roadblocks, contradictions, and challenges to public health and human rights at home and abroad.

Résumé: Patients turn to alternative, complementary, and integrative medical therapies, which they learn about from support groups, the press, the Internet, and other non-medical sources. They learn that diseases and poor health can be prevented or reversed, and not just treated.

Since many of these therapies are outside mainstream medicine, physicians may not be familiar with these alternative therapies and may be uncomfortable discussing them with their patients or prescribing them.

The objective of this conference is to provide up-to-date scientific information on the use of various popular alternative and complementary medical therapies in the treatment of disease, the prevention of disease, and the promotion of general good health and well-being.

The conference will focus on separating what works from what doesn’t, with evidence-based discussions helping practitioners understand the value and the limitations of these treatments, and how to integrate them into a patient-specific management plan. By narrowing the educational gap among practitioners regarding these therapies, this program will ultimately translate into improved patient outcomes.

Co-Sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic and Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group, the conference is designed to be an exciting, provocative, and educational forum.

Résumé: This course will focus on the information needed by health care providers to understand, prevent, and treat venous disease by gaining knowledge of the range of treatment options available, from medical to minimally invasive surgery, to result in better outcomes and quality of life for patients with venous disease.

Résumé: There are numerous challenges in developing defenses, particularly medical countermeasures, or detection systems, to address biological or chemical threats. If the products or systems address only a particular agent, and have no other application, the cost of development and preparedness is enormously high relative to the perceived benefit of having these tools at hand. This Conference will focus on an array of topics in which new research has been focused on broad spectrum and platform technology approaches to discovering and developing defenses for biological and chemical threats that both leverage and integrate "everyday" applications.

Résumé: GTCbio's 2nd Oncology Biomarkers conference on January 19-20, 2008 in Miami, FL will provide an extensive look at new and innovative techniques for discovering and validating biomarkers. Challenges to biomarker validation will be examined in depth, including regulatory perspectives on development and qualification and reimbursement strategies, as will the clinical application of oncology biomarkers and enabling biomarkers in cancer drug development.

Résumé: Advances in biomarker development are revolutionizing the way we study, diagnose and treat disease. However, progress in the development and use of biomarkers for diseases of the central nervous system has been limited by a number of difficulties - including inherent barriers associated with studying the brain.

Development of reliable biomarkers for brain disorders would dramatically accelerate research on the etiology, pathophysiology, disease progression and therapeutic development of many very prevalent and devastating diseases including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, and others.

During this 2-day meeting, international experts will gather to discuss the latest advances in biomarker technologies and biomarker development for brain disorders, as well as the logistical, regulatory and funding challenges experienced by scientists working on clinical trials for biomarkers.

Résumé: Sexual reproduction is a complex and highly regulated process essential for successful propagation and diversification of genetic complements, beginning with germ cell development and completing with birth of live young. For successful reproduction, a plethora of events including gametogenesis, ovulation, fertilization, implantation, and placentation requires precise regulation; the success of each go-ahead event is dependent on the accomplishment of the preceding event. Research on these events and their coordination has been translated into clinical practice, particularly for enhancing successes in fertility clinics, controlling gynecological diseases and developing contraceptives. Résumé: There have been significant advances in our understanding of the causes and pathologic progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Identification of disease-causing mutations has provided unprecedented opportunities to develop new and predictive models and move closer to new therapeutic treatments. Technological advances in biochemistry, genomics, proteomics and imaging have facilitated the ability to pose and answer complex questions in complex disease, as well as an appreciation that neurodegenerative diseases have distinct cell death signaling cascades that can share some common molecular events.

Résumé: The functioning of the nervous system depends on formation of a complex pattern of connections during development. If these connections are subsequently lost through injury or degeneration, axons in the adult CNS fail to regenerate, creating a major clinical challenge. The last several years have seen tremendous progress in identifying molecular mechanisms for axon development and regeneration, although much remains to be learned about these complex processes. Rapid progress is being made in identifying new classes of extracellular regulators, understanding the mechanisms by which this extracellular information is transduced by the neuron into appropriate responses, and learning the underlying molecular logic for the formation of neural connectivity. This meeting will bring together researchers in the fields of axon development, degeneration and regeneration.

Both rapid and delayed responses have a profound impact on normal physiological function, and on the progression of diseases such as pulmonary hypertension, sleep apnea, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders.

Résumé: The goal of this Keystone meeting is to bring together both pioneers and newcomers to the neurobiology of the chemical senses to discuss the development and function of neuronal circuits that underlie the perception of odorants, tastants, and pheromones. In the decade since the identification of molecular receptors for chemosensory stimuli, the field is increasingly moving toward questions of how sensory circuits are assembled during development and how they function in mediating chemosensory perception. Researchers are elucidating the molecules and mechanisms that pattern connections from the periphery to the brain. Using electrophysiological and imaging techniques, information processing is being studied mostly at the periphery. However, there is little information about how information is propagated from lower pathways to the cortex (or equivalent) and other higher brain regions.

Résumé: The The focus of this conference is to provide instruction in the routine and unique applications of ultrasound in the cancer patient. Presentations, both didactic and practical workshops, will cover a range of organ systems involving a variety of cancers with their respective diagnoses, management, complications and outcomes. Physicians and sonographers will also have an opportunity to participate in hands-on demonstrations on state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment, as well as to interact directly with the faculty.

Résumé: This one and one-half day workshop has been designed to review current aspects of colon cancer and colon cancer screening. The format for this course is hands-on training using workstations loaded with approximately 25-40 'endoscopically proven' data sets, chosen to include a mix of normals, abnormals and pitfalls. In addition to the hands-on experience, didactic lectures are included on patient preparation, data acquisition, current screening techniques, and how Virtual Colonoscopy fits in with overall patient management.

Résumé: The CAG Triplet Repeat Disorders are a group of largely untreatable inherited neurological disorders which result from an expansion in a CAG trinucleotide repeat in the mutant genes. This group of diseases includes Huntington’s disease, spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy, and several of the spinocerebellar ataxias.

Résumé: Apoptosis plays a key role in the morphogenesis during development and in the maintenance of tissue homeostasis in adults. Its mechanisms have been intensely studied, and early stages of apoptosis are about to be fully understood. The fate of later stage apoptotic cells remain to be characterized.

Résumé: This conference will emphasize mechanisms of angiogenesis and microvascular remodeling and their functional consequences in development and disease. Because angiogenesis and vascular remodeling are recognized as essential for tumor growth and progression of chronic disease, understanding the biological principles and factors that drive or inhibit blood vessel formation has gained importance. Increasing use of angiogenesis inhibitors in cancer and eye disease not only is enabling assessment of efficacy but also is revealing previously unrecognized features of vascular plasticity. The conference will explore current views of the regulation of angiogenesis, by examining the molecular mechanisms of blood vessel formation, maturation and regression. The conference will also address conditions that drive blood vessel abnormalities under pathological conditions and strategies for stopping angiogenesis, destroying defective blood vessels, and normalizing the vasculature at sites of disease.

Résumé: The program for the 2009 Conference on Cannabinoid Function in the CNS, the third in this series, will communicate new and exciting advances in the field, bringing together a range of established investigators, young investigators, and trainees from around the world to present and discuss a spectrum of topics related to the chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and pharmacology of the endogenous cannabinoid system. A distinctive feature in this year’s program is a special emphasis on the functions served by the endocannabinoids in the diseased brain and the opportunities offered by these lipid transmitters in drug discovery.

Résumé: The 2009 GRC on Catecholamines will focus on cutting-edge developments in catecholamine research. In recent years, catecholamines have been the focus of investigations using a broad range of approaches from molecular biology to behavior and clinical studies. One of the characteristics of the field is that neuronal systems using catecholamines have much in common, although investigators who focus on particular catecholamines or on different actions of the same catecholamine are often unaware of complementary aspects of catecholamine research. It is increasingly apparent that continued progress will require increasingly integrated approaches in studies of catecholamine biology, function and dysfunction. Thus, molecular biologists are being drawn to more integrated systems approaches and behavioral biologists are exploiting many molecular approaches.
