 Résumé Integrated photonic technology platforms enable system-on-chip solutions for communications, sensing, bio-medical measurements, and other applications. Several platforms are available including silicon photonics (SiPh), indium phosphide (InP), planar lightwave circuit (PLC), and hybrid approaches. These technologies have received significant attention in recent years, especially SiPh, owing to the potential for energy-efficient and affordable short-reach optical interconnects. This workshop will bring together leading experts to discuss the status and performance of these platforms, the array of photonic building blocks available within each platform, the accessibility of photonics foundries and multi-project wafer runs, and the remaining hurdles for achieving true large-scale integration.

3.Laser Ignition Conference (LIC)

 Résumé In order to achieve higher fuel efficiencies, and lower fuel emissions while maintaining engine specific power densities, many practical combustion systems have resorted to advanced combustion regimes wherein ignition is severely impeded. Laser ignition has proved instrumental in unlocking the true potential of such combustion modes. This is the third conference that attempts to collate the latest developments in laser and laser technologies for the feasibility of laser ignition in practical combustion systems. In parallel, the latest developments in non-laser ignition systems will also be presented. Also, studies that enhance our understanding of the ignition process will also be presented. Included in this conference are guest lectures from leading authorities on laser ignition technologies.

 Résumé The latest developments in laser based sensing and free space laser communication.

Sophisticated laser systems are increasingly being used for information gathering and sharing since they can satisfy many critical needs in sensing and high bandwidth free space optical (FSO) communications. We are coming into the age where laser systems are a viable competitor to RF systems for many applications. This meeting reports on the latest use of lasers in diverse fields such as environmental sensing, remote imaging, close-in inspection and medical diagnostics. Common challenges to both systems, such as atmospheric effects, are also considered. In addition to applications and systems, this meeting also covers the enabling technologies that are often common in both sensing and communication. Advances in sources and waveform/wavefront modulation techniques, receivers, optical apertures, and post-detection processing schemes are all required and are subjects of this meeting.

12.Freeform Optics

 Résumé Freeform Optics explores the evolving impact of freeform optical surfaces on optical systems for both imaging and illumination. New fabrication techniques that create optical surfaces that are not surfaces of revolution open an expansive new space for optical systems. Particularly enabled systems include illumination systems, head-worn displays and mid- and long-wave pervasive surveillance systems. But optical testing methods for these new surfaces are lacking, and the theory and implementation of an aberration theory as a basis for optical design of these surfaces was only unraveled in 2012. The scope features work on the optical design of imaging systems with freeform surfaces, evolving methods for surface representation for illumination system optimization and a perspective on the new challenges these surface present to optical testing.

When co-located with other topical conferences involving materials, there can be joint symposia involving those topics.
