 Résumé COSI meeting consists of topics that range from theoretical to experimental demonstration and verification of the latest advances in computation imaging research. This meeting covers subject matter in fundamental physics, numerical methods and physical hardware that has led to significant improvements in the fields of imaging and sensing for medical, defense, homeland security, inspection, testing applications.

COSI is an important discipline being applied to solve numerous problems in modern optics and the techniques developed in this field have already been incorporated in to numerous commercial products. This meeting places particular emphasis on integrated analysis of physical layer measurement and digital layer processing. In contrast with the conventional model of a “digital image” as simply a discretely sampled version of an analog image, COSI considers advanced opportunities for image data coding and decoding in optical, electronic and software layers.

 Résumé SPPCom is focused on all aspects of optical and electronic signal processing for photonic communication systems ranging from on-chip communications to ultra-long haul transmission.

Signal processing is required in many types of photonic communication systems and networks - from on-chip data transfer to ultra-long haul transmission. As spectrally efficient modulation formats become more prevalent in these applications, advances in the requisite signal processing for transmitters and receivers are ever more important. This includes techniques for mitigating the effects of transmission impairments and non-ideal components/devices, key transmitter/receiver functions, forward error correction, and enabling technologies. Software defined networks, space division multiplexed systems, Tb/s superchannel systems, and broadband hybrid wireless-optical communication systems are of particular interest.

 Résumé The Laser Applications to Chemical, Security, and Environmental Analysis (LACSEA) topical meeting focuses on laser-based sensing in combustion or industrial process gases, gases that may contain chemical or biological agents, and in atmospheric gases. Sensing of liquids (e.g., aerosols) and solids (e.g., particulates or explosives) are also discussed. The rapid development of laser technologies as well as data analysis tools are paving the way for novel monitoring schemes and even real-time control in various environments. Topics cover the VUV to THz spectra range, and involve exciting new developments in analytical spectroscopy, ultrafast lasers, frequency combs, and miniaturization.

Creative ideas involving new laser technologies, methodologies, and/or data analysis tools will be showcased. Special emphasis will be given to techniques exploring use of shorter (e.g., VUV) or longer (e.g., THz) spectral ranges.

Unique light gathering optics, new image sensor architectures and technology, advanced on and off chip digital image processing, and advanced compression and transmission of large images is covered by IS. Leading edge uses of imaging systems in microscopy, evasive and non-evasive surgery, remote sensing, astronomical observations, imaging from the far flung universe as well as nearby planets, digital cinematography capture and projection, computational photography and consumer imaging are all topics of interest at IS.
