Keystone Symposia: Organ Crosstalk in Obesity and NAFLD
21 Jan 2018 - 25 Jan 2018 • Keystone, Colorado, United States
Abstract:
This conference brings together experts in the novel, multidisciplinary evaluation of organ cross-talk, using innovative combinations of molecular, genetic, physiological, pharmacological and systems neuroscience approaches to: 1) Provide a unique and timely perspective, and 2) Inspire interactions directed toward basic, clinical and translational research in integrative metabolism. Finally, the joint staging of this conference in conjunction with the conference on “Bioenergetics and Metabolic Disease” will strategically leverage presentations targeting the biology of metabolism and nutrient availability in obesity with those focused on the biology of energy utilization. Taken together, this novel combination will provide a coherent, powerful and comprehensive understanding of and appreciation for the complex.

Keystone Symposia: Frontiers in Islet Biology and Diabetes
04 Feb 2018 - 08 Feb 2018 • Keystone, Colorado, United States
Abstract:
Diabetes mellitus is a pandemic disease rooted in defects of multiple organs. Autoimmune destruction of pancreatic islet beta cells (type 1 diabetes) or relentless deterioration in beta cell function from excessive systemic insulin demand (type 2 diabetes) culminates in severe or lethal metabolic derangement. Inter-organ signaling has emerged as a crucial mechanism for achieving metabolic balance, including responses by peripheral insulin-target organs that, in turn, remotely regulate islet activity. This meeting will focus on crucial aspects of beta cell biology, including islet development, pancreas cellular plasticity, beta cell surrogate generation from stem cells, novel gene editing technologies, and immune-islet interactions, as well as translation of basic discoveries into novel therapeutic trials for diabetic patients. This meeting aims to encourage the presentation of novel concepts, foster useful interactions between participants from academia and industry, and accelerate interdisciplinary approaches in diabetes research.

Keystone Symposia: Uncomplicating Diabetes - Reducing the Burden of Diabetes-Related End-Organ Injury
25 Feb 2018 - 01 Mar 2018 • Santa Fe, New Mexico, United States
Abstract:
This Keystone Symposia conference will address diabetic complications which remain the major cause of morbidity and mortality in the diabetic population. Although the outlook has improved over the last two decades with respect to diabetic vascular disease, these complications remain a major burden with the underlying explanation for these complications at a molecular and cellular level as yet not fully clarified. With recent advances in the management of diabetes, particularly new classes of glucose-lowering agents, it is critical to determine if these new therapies have both glucose-dependent and independent effects in reducing diabetes-related end-organ injury. With major advances in our understanding of key pathological features of diabetic complications such as angiogenesis, fibrosis, inflammation and vascular remodeling, albeit in non-diabetic contexts, now is the time to translate this new knowledge to the field of diabetic complications. By learning from and recruiting such researchers into the field of diabetic complications, there is a great opportunity to develop novel, highly innovative approaches to identify new targets in order to discover new ways to treat, reverse or prevent diabetic complications that lead to premature atherosclerosis, heart failure, blindness, cognitive impairment and end-stage renal disease. This meeting is paired with "Vascular Biology and Human Diseases: From Molecular Pathways to Novel Therapeutics."

Keystone Symposia: Novel Aspects of Bone Biology
13 Jun 2018 - 16 Jun 2018 • Snowbird, Utah, United States
Abstract:
This conference presents recent progress made in two relatively novel areas of skeletal biology not covered by other meetings. The first one is the cross-talk between bone, hematopoiesis and leukemogenesis. The second is the study of the multiple endocrine functions of bone and how their study impacts on our understanding of multiple degenerative diseases. Meetings of bone biology are traditionally dominated by the need to explain the bases and to propose treatments for the most frequent bone disease: osteoporosis. Aside from this very vivid field, two other aspects of bone biology have developed in the last decade. A feature shared by these two aspects of biology is that they link bone biology to multiple other organs and to other functions besides making bones. These two aspects are the dialog between bone and hematopoiesis, whether physiological or pathological, and the endocrine functions of bone. This conference will showcase the many advances made in these two aspects of skeleton biology and how these developments have enriched our understanding of the pathogenesis of multiple degenerative diseases affecting the bone marrow, energy metabolism or the brain. Because of its very nature, this meeting will bring together investigators from different fields rarely provided with an opportunity to meet.
