Workshop "Algebraic Proof Theory for Social Behaviour"
02. Jul 2018 - 06. Jul 2018 • Delft, Niederlande
Zusammenfassung:
The major trend in modern logic is the move from logic to logics. The need for formal modelling of reasoning in various fields of science (philosophy, linguistics, AI, cognitive, social and management sciences) led to the design of hundreds of bespoke logics. For instance, the focus on multi-agent interaction and social behaviour has led to the introduction of logics specific to contexts involving e.g. dynamic changes, uncertainty, incomplete and inconsistent information, which are at odds with reasoning as is formalized in classical logic. This rapid expansion has generated the need to develop overarching theories capable to provide uniform proofs of fundamental properties--such as soundness, completeness, analiticity, decidability--for each member of vast families of logics, while at the same time accounting in a modular way for the specific features of each. Algebraic proof theory is a research area in which these general results can be achieved using insights from algebraic logic, universal algebra, duality and representation theory for classes of algebras. This workshop aims at bring together researchers in algebraic proof theory and its applications, explore promising research directions, and foster collaborations.

Workshop "Mathematics & Its Philosophy in the 19th Century"
13. Jul 2018 • Amsterdam, Niederlande
Zusammenfassung:
The e-Ideas Group at the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands is pleased to announce its first workshop, taking place in dates 13-14th July 2018 in Amsterdam. The aim of the workshop will be to foster discussion on the development of mathematics and related themes in philosophy in the German speaking context during the 19th century. Confirmed keynote speakers: Paola Basso (University of Bucharest, Romania), Paola Cantù (Université Aix-Marseille, France), Jeremy Heis (University of California, Irvine, U.S.A.) and James Tappenden (University of Michigan, U.S.A.). Authors are invited to submit an abstract of their talk of 300-500 words, excluding bibliography. Talks should be about 40 minutes in length, followed by a short Q/A session. Please make sure your abstract is prepared for double-blind review. Submissions on the following topics are particularly welcome: - Mathematics teaching in universities between Prussia, Austria and Bohemia in the 19th century - The role of mathematics in the sciences in the 19th century Influence of Kant and Wolff on 19th century mathematics - Bernard Bolzano’s mathematical work and its influence - Issues in the mathematical practice of the 19th century

ESU-8 — 8th EUROPEAN SUMMER UNIVERSITY ON HISTORY AND EPISTEMOLOGY IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION
20. Jul 2018 - 24. Jul 2018 • Oslo, Norwegen
Zusammenfassung:
The ESU is more a collection of intensive courses than a conference for researchers. It is a place where teachers and researchers meet and work together. It is also a place where beginners, more experienced researchers and teachers present their teaching experience to the benefit of the participants and get a constructive feedback from them. It refers to all levels of education – from primary school, to tertiary education – including in-service teachers’ training.

NeutrinoHistory2018 — History of the Neutrino
05. Sep 2018 - 07. Sep 2018 • Paris, Frankreich
Zusammenfassung:
Neutrinos play an exceptional role as well in particle or nuclear physics as in astrophysics. The purpose of the Conference is to cover the main steps of their History since the brilliant and inspired idea of Pauli in December 1930. Though trying to cover all the facets of this fascinating particle, it should be considered as a contribution to the History of the Neutrino, since some chapters are still to be written. The objective is, on each topic, to have an historian/historical approach and follow as close as possible the original papers in correlation with the scientific and historical context.

7OSME — The 7th International Meeting on Origami in Science, Mathematics and Education
05. Sep 2018 - 07. Sep 2018 • Oxford University, Großbritannien
Zusammenfassung:
The Origami, Science, Mathematics, and Education (OSME) meetings offer researchers from science, engineering, mathematics, design, art, and education that use origami (or folding in any medium) in their work. Uses of origami in engineering and science applications, as well as in art and design, has exploded over the past 10 years, as had study of the mathematics of paper folding and its use as an engaging and effective educational tool. The OSME conferences have taken place every 4-6 years since 1989. The Proceedings of the 6th OSME conference (Univ. of Tokyo, 2014) was published by the AMS. In 2018 the 7th such conference will be held at St. Anne's College, Oxford University.

Symposium on the Science of Stories
15. Okt 2018 - 17. Okt 2018 • Burlington, Vereinigte Staaten
Zusammenfassung:
The Vermont Complex Systems Center is excited to announce our inaugural symposium on the Science of Stories. During this intensive three-day professional education course, we will explore the nature of narratives, how to extract them from data, how they move through time and space, and how to preserve them through communication. We will also explore how to communicate data-rich narratives to the public and how to tell a story using data visualizations. In this course, we will introduce participants to methods, tools, and theory at the forefront of complex systems science, cognitive science, sentiment analysis, network theory, information theory, digital humanities, literature, data visualization, and data analytics.
