Nuclear Data - The Original Big Data Challenge
25. Feb 2021 • Online, Großbritannien
Veranstalter:
Organised by IoP West Midlands Branch (Keele Centre)
Zusammenfassung:
Ever since Rutherford split the atom, understanding the probabilities that define our nuclear age has been critical to our application of nuclear technology. In this seminar, Allan Simpson of the National Nuclear Laboratory will take you on a journey to discover just why the data that helps us understand the inner workings of nuclear reactors, the evolution of stars or treat cancer patients in our hospitals is the original big data challenge and just why we'll be seeking perfection for years to come.

Virtual entities in science: a virtual workshop
05. Mär 2021 - 19. Mär 2021 • Aachen, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
Organized by the project "Virtual Particles" (A1) of the DFG Research Unit "The Epistemology of the Large Hadron Collider"
Zusammenfassung:
The concept of the “virtual” has a long tradition in physics, with "virtual displacements" or "virtual images" dating back to long before the dawn of the digital age. In today’s physics, the term "virtual" is mostly associated with the quantum world, first and foremost with the “virtual particle” of quantum field theory. In other disciplines, however, use of the term "virtual" without a digital connotation is much rarer. The basic idea behind the terminology of the virtual, however, could be much more common, even outside of physics. For this workshop we invite contributions that address the historical formation and philosophical interpretation of concepts of virtual entities in physics and other disciplines – in whatever terms they may come. The main goal of the workshop is to bring to the fore similarities and differences in the meanings and functions of these concepts. Work that integrates philosophical and historical approaches is particularly welcome. The workshop will be held online on three consecutive Fridays: March 5, 12 and 19, 2021.

The Origin of Maxwell's Equations
12. Mai 2021 • University of Worcester or online, Großbritannien
Veranstalter:
Organised by IOP West Midlands Branch, Hereford & Worcester Centre
Zusammenfassung:
Maxwell's discovery of the laws of electromagnetism represents one of the key events in the history of physics, resulting in a paradigm shift from Newtonian physics to a Universe dominated by fields. Maxwell's discovery provides the link between the physics of Newton and Einstein. The revolutionary nature of Maxwell's insights will be highlighted. This event may also be delivered as an online webinar. If necessary due to Coronavirus or venue restrictions it will be an online webinar only.
