BPS Dynamics and Quantum Mathematics
20 May 2024 - 21 Jun 2024 • Florence, Italy
Organizer:
Galileo Galilei Institute
Abstract:
Quantum field theory is not only the unifying language of fundamental forces, but also an extremely rich source of surprising non-perturbative dualities. This success in predicting unexpected new links among seemingly distant subjects has accelerated on many fronts over the past few years, thanks to applications of modern developments in “quantum” mathematics to quantum field theories with supersymmetric, integrable, conformal, topological, or holomorphic structures. The insights emerging from these developments have been the source of important novel results across various branches of theoretical physics and mathematics, hinting at further new connections awaiting discovery. The common ground to all these recent developments is the richness of the physics and mathematics underlying the dynamics of protected (BPS) sectors, whose study ties together fundamental questions in diverse fields in original ways. This workshop aims to highlight and discuss the impact of key developments, to forge new synergies, and to grasp together the hints of far-reaching new opportunities.

Q-CASA — 2024 IPDPS Workshop on Quantum Computing Algorithms, Systems, and Applications
27 May 2024 - 31 May 2024 • San Francisco, United States
Organizer:
Iowa State University, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Abstract:
Recent breakthroughs in quantum computing hardware have created an explosion of research and activity in quantum information science. The rise of “Noisy Intermediate Scale Quantum” (NISQ) devices has revealed major algorithmic and architectural challenges within this new technology. For example, the potential roles of quantum and/or quantum-classical hybrid data structures on algorithm design and performance evaluation are subjects of intense research. The goal of the QCASA workshop is to showcase the novel studies and foremost applications of non-fault-tolerant quantum computers, and provide a timely forum for computational scientists, software developers, computer scientists, physicists and quantum hardware specialists to exchange and discuss ideas on current problems in quantum information science. The contributions in this workshop will help elucidate practical, near-term limitations of current quantum devices, gauge the effectiveness of a class of approximate circuits quantitatively, and garner insight on what degree of that approximation is optimal for a given regime of machine performance.

816. WE-Heraeus-Seminar — Silicon Carbide: Classical and Quantum Technologies
28 Jul 2024 - 31 Jul 2024 • Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Germany
Organizer:
Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation
Abstract:
Silicon carbide (SiC) is today’s leading third-generation semiconductor, and the first to demonstrate a light emitting diode. Its extraordinary thermo-electric properties made it the dominating semiconductor for high power electronics, such as electric mobility. Since more than ten years, the SiC industry continues growing at an annual rate of 30%, and more than 70% global market share is held by STMicroelectronics and Infineon. This makes silicon carbide one of the very few semiconductors in which Europe is competitive. The continued research on improving “classical” SiC material production and fabrication has propelled the creation of a new valorisation pathway: The emerging field of SiC “quantum” technologies. Especially in the last 5 - 10 years, colour centres in SiC have shown a disruptive potential across all relevant fields in quantum technologies. This seminar brings together the leading experts in SiC quantum and classical technologies, including partners from academia, RTOs, and industry.

Workshop on Entanglement in Many-Body Systems: From Nuclei to Quantum Computers and Back
09 Sep 2024 - 20 Sep 2024 • Seattle, United States
Abstract:
This workshop will be centered around the topic of entanglement in many-body systems relevant for and connected to NP. The goal is to advance exchanges of ideas and techniques between NP and other fields of many-body physics such as condensed matter, quantum chemistry or quantum field theories. These areas are already well advanced in the characterization and use of entanglement for the description of many-body systems, and in the development of experimental techniques for producing and detecting entangled states. The knowledge acquired in these fields can guide progress in the development of entanglement-driven methods for classical and quantum simulations of nuclei, and in the identification of experiments probing entanglement in nuclear systems. Vice versa, specificities of many-body NP techniques can potentially be useful for other fields, and QIS in general. The workshop will explore these different aspects.

822. WE-Heraeus-Seminar — Chirality and Quantum Spin – a Critical Assessment
02 Dec 2024 - 05 Dec 2024 • Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Germany
Organizer:
Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation
Abstract:
For electrons moving in chiral molecules, one spin projection is more likely to be transported through the structure than the other, despite that the chiral molecule is often diamagnetic. This is the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. It is a quantum phenomenon that is based on chirality, spin-orbit coupling, particle-particle interaction, and compositeness. However, exactly how these aspects are brought together and result in the CISS effect is yet an enigma. This question, among several others, will be discussed in this seminar, with the aim to reach some clarification.
