Gordon Research Conferences

The Cell Polarity Signaling GRS provides a unique forum for young doctoral and post-doctoral researchers to present their work, discuss new methods, cutting edge ideas, and pre-published data, as well as to build collaborative relationships with their peers. Experienced mentors and trainee moderators will facilitate active participation in scientific discussion to allow all attendees to be engaged participants rather than spectators.

BPS - The Biophysical Society

This meeting focuses on the topic of membrane biophysics and brings together scientists with a diverse range of perspectives, approaches, and disciplines including (but not limited to) physiology, engineering, cell biology, chemistry, and physics. The program seeks to bring together scientists working in different areas of membrane biology to catalyze cross-fertilization that spurs frontier research advances. The meeting invites scientists working in all areas of membrane biology, chemical biology, biomedical engineering and biophysics using a variety of computational and experimental approaches. In addition to invited speakers, each day will have 4-5 short talks selected from submitted abstracts. The attendees, particularly students and junior researchers, will be provided a positive and informal environment to stimulate the exchange of ideas and foster collaborations among them.

The aim of the Conference is to provide the forum for researchers and professionals involved with the applications of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and other connected areas, to exchange and discuss their findings and experiences. The conference topics cover various fields of physics, chemistry, biology, medical sciences, engineering, and environmental sciences. The Conference program includes invited lectures, keynote topical talks, panel discussions, and a limited number of oral and poster presentations. Conference publications are: Book of Abstracts, containing all accepted one page abstracts, and Conference Proceedings, containing peer-reviewed full conference papers. The Conference also arranged the publication of the Special Issue of European Physics Journal – Special Topics dedicated to selected full papers based on conference contributions. The official language of the Conference is English. RAP 2024 will be a hybrid conference with full interaction between onsite and online participants.

The conference is hosted by the DST/NRF SARChI Chair (M3B2) and the Department of Mathematics & Applied Mathematics, University of Pretoria.

The annual international conference on Mathematical Methods and Models in Biosciences (Biomath) will take place from 16 June to 22 June 2024 in the Cutty Sark Resort, Scottburgh, South Africa. Biomath 2024 is devoted to recent research in life sciences based on applications of mathematics as well as mathematics applied to or motivated by biological studies. It is a multidisciplinary meeting forum for researchers who develop and apply mathematical and computational tools to the study of phenomena in the broad fields of biology, ecology, medicine, biophysics, biochemistry, pharmacokinetics, chemoinformatics, biotechnology, bioengineering, environmental science, etc.

At RAD 2023 Conference, for the first time, we invited the young researchers (PhD holders younger than 35 years old) and students (undergraduate, master and PhD students) to participate. We are very happy that a large number responded to our invitation, so that they had their own oral sessions or participated in poster sessions. Their impressions were very good and I take this opportunity to invite all kinds of young researchers and students again! We started at the RAD 2023 conference with the loyalty club and I want to send a big thank to the first ten members of the loyalty club of our big RAD family for their loyalty to this conference. The RAD conference is very specific and completely different from all other conferences, and it is primarily for those who like those specifics! Controlling matter to the point where simple stimuli can change mechanical properties and lead to force generation up to a controlled shape change represents a holy grail of modern science. While active matter research is advancing in an impressive pace, we are still far from a situation where we can claim the understanding and control required for such active materials to become part of our every-day live. While we are not able to control active matter the way we want, every cell in our body is able to do exactly that. Cells are active, non-equilibrium systems that are able to switch their mechanical properties in seconds from stiff to soft and even from solid to liquid and vice versa. This is possible because cells can precisely control the properties of their intracellular mechanical support structure, the cytoskeleton. In this WE-Heraeus Seminar, we will unite todays leading experts in the field of an active matter description of the cellular cytoskeleton to push the next generation of students and postdocs to the current knowledge level in a single seminar.

The field of biology is experiencing a transformative phase, thanks to remarkable advances in single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). The explosion of high-resolution cryo-EM maps is challenging computational biophysics to rapidly and robustly discern mechanistic implications from the experimental data. Emerging theoretical approaches aim at processing, validating, complementing, and interpreting cryo-EM data, overcoming issues in image analysis, map refinement, and the simulation of large biomolecules. This thematic meeting seeks to explore the interface between computational biophysics and cryo-EM, highlighting the breadth of work that spans these two fields, and encouraging new synergies. Our goal for this meeting is to maximize the potential of computations and experiments in the field of single-particle cryo-EM.

Living cells have evolved robust mechanisms to coordinate the activity of many different molecules in space and time. For example, cells concentrate specific molecules into membrane-less compartments called biomolecular condensates. Experimentalists have generated an ever-growing list of condensates, which participate in diverse biological functions, such as gene expression, signal transduction, and neurotransmission. In addition, these condensates exhibit a wide range of lifetimes, sizes, mechanochemical properties, and architectures. Despite recent progress in characterizing molecular interactions leading to condensation, how the emergent physical properties of condensates mediate their biological functions is poorly understood. This conference will bring together a diverse group of theorists and experimentalists currently probing this structure-function problem of biomolecular condensates.
