 Zusammenfassung The goal of BacNet15 is to cover most recent advances in key areas of bacterial network research, including information processing and signal transduction, uni- and multicellular behaviour, stress responses, small molecule signalling, cell biology, systems biology and bioengineering. Although it is commonly recognized that a majority of cellular functions are executed by complex networks of genes, proteins and small molecules, our understanding of how these networks operate within the cell is still very limited. Further progress in the field requires a novel combination of interdisciplinary approaches, combining the tools of molecular biology, biochemistry and biophysics with novel high-throughput techniques, bioinformatics and computational analysis.

2.Be There Or Die? The Role Of The Microenvironment In B Cell Behaviour In Health And Disease 2015

 Zusammenfassung B cells are lymphocytes that play a key role in both the innate and adaptive immune response. The principal functions attributed to B cells is their ability to differentiate into plasma cells that secrete antibodies against antigens, and eventually develop into memory B cells. Long-lived plasma cells (PC) and memory B cells are the cells responsible for maintaining serological memory against childhood vaccines or infections previously met in life. However, as appreciation of the multifunctional nature of the B cells grows, their importance to health and disease is re-evaluated. An increasing emphasis is being placed on studying the multiple interactions of the microenvironment with differentiating B cells, from the earliest progenitor stage to fully differentiated plasma cells. Microenvironmental “cues” encompass signals from commensal microbiota and stimulatory and survival factors derived from interacting cells. In normal individuals, the pool of peripheral B cells is constant in size. The control of B, PC and memory B cell homeostasis is the result of a very fine balance between their maturation, proliferation and survival. Micro-environmental factors have been shown to play a critical role in maintaining lymphocyte homeostasis. Pathways and mechanisms that govern normal differentiation and survival of B cells can sometimes become dysregulated and drive pathogenic processes such as hematopoietic malignancies and autoimmune diseases. A variety of techniques are disposable for studying the regulation of B-cell maintenance and survival in health and disease. These techniques and methodologies span a broad range of "classical" disciplines such as bacteriology, virology, cell biology, immunology, histology, biochemistry and chemistry. In addition, high-throughput sequencing, mathematical modelling and informatics will be applied expanding the multidisciplinary aspect of this proposal beyond methods of classical biology. In this conference we will bring together eminent clinicians, biologists, mathematicians, biophysicists to discuss the explosion of paradigm-shifting discoveries in B cell biology and their relevance to healthy immunity. Basic mechanisms of B cell survival, differentiation, effector function and death will be reviewed during this event.  We will also focus on how alteration in these pathways may lead to pathology and to the abnormal B cell responses observed in cancer, infection and autoimmunity. Some of the invited lectures will illustrate how the elucidation of molecular pathways operating in B cells and governing proliferation, homeostasis and cell death may lead to novel immunotherapeutic strategies to ameliorate pathological conditions in experimental models and humans.

4.Gordon Research Conference — Chronobiology 2015

 Zusammenfassung Chronobiology GRC will present cutting-edge research on nearly all aspects of circadian biology: molecular, cellular, systems, neural, physiological and behavioral. The Conference will feature a wide range of organisms, from prokaryotes and lower eukaryotes to plants, animals and humans. Basic topics like systems vs cell-autonomous organization, circadian entrainment and basic clock mechanisms will feature alongside more translational topics like metabolic disease, cancer and aging. Invited speakers will represent many different subdisciplines, including biochemistry, molecular genetics, neurobiology, cell biology and physiology. The Conference will bring together invited speakers, which include many of the leading circadian rhythm investigators from across the globe, with more junior scientists, post-docs and graduate students. They will not only have the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with the leaders in the field but also to present their work in poster format. Based on the submitted abstracts, a committee will choose some of these poster presentations for short talks. The collegial and informal atmosphere of the Conference, with ample discussion time as well as opportunities for informal gatherings in the afternoons and evenings, promotes brainstorming as well as new collaborations.

5.Thiol-Based Redox Switches In Life Sciences 2015

 Zusammenfassung This conference will focus on the evolution of chloroplasts through the process of endosymbiosis that gave rise to a vast array of photosynthetic eukaryotes and forever altered life on earth.   Establishment of endosymbiotic organelles required endosymbiotic gene transfer, the evolution of protein targeting systems and metabolic connections, and the evolution of organellar division machineries and organelle-nucleus communication pathways. However, the molecular basis of these processes, their importance for the establishment of the endosymbiosis or even the order in which they occurred are largely unknown.   The emergence of synthetic biology as a growing field now provides an interdisciplinary framework for addressing these and related fundamental questions in biology and evolution.   The conference will bring together an interdisciplinary group of international scientists ranging from plant, algal and microbial biologists to computer scientists and engineers to establish a foundation towards experimental recapitulation of the origin of plastids by endosymbiosis and potentially provide blueprints for the generation of novel synthetic organelles.
