Zusammenfassung: The role of microRNA in regulating mammalian development and disease is now well established. miRNAs represent a novel class of targets for therapeutic and diagnostic development, currently not fully exploited by the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Cambridge Healthtech Institute’s Sixth Annual microRNA in Human Disease and Development meeting is specifically designed to address the role of miRNA in human development and disease, and to explore the impact of this new research for drug and diagnostic development. The meeting will cover progress in identifying human miRNA, technologies used for miRNA profiling, and the latest research in linking miRNA to human disease. Zusammenfassung: The conference series aims to incorporate basic, translational and clinical aspects of stem cell research into a single framework. The mechanisms that generate and maintain mammalian embryonic and tissue-specific stem cell populations will be discussed, as will the application of this knowledge to regenerative medicine and cancer biology. In particular, the role of induced pluripotentcy and cancer stem cells will be highlighted. Non-mammalian model systems will be included as they provide strong forward genetics, and also opportunities for in vivo pharmacological screening. The goal is to give participants an overview of the model systems and scientific and logistic framework involved in gaining and exploiting basic knowledge of stem cell biology.

Zusammenfassung: The theme of the 2010 Summer School is the phenomenon of strong (or extreme) sequence conservation, which will be explored from a quantitative and multidisciplinary perspective, and connections forged with parts of biology outside of genomics.

Sequence conservation forms the basis of comparative genomics, has already played a pivotal role in biology and medicine, and is likely to become increasingly important in the eras of abundant sequence data and the personalized genome. Ultra-conservation has led to a broad appreciation of the need for a reevaluation of how the action of selection is inferred from sequence comparison. It has raised basic questions about the character of "neutral drift," calling for new quantitative developments that may be facilitated by the cultures of mathematics, physics, computer science, and engineering; however, this pursuit - and the interpretation of genome sequence in general - ought to be firmly grounded in its biological context.

With a multitude of whole-genome sequences now publicly available, ultra-conservation is trivial to exhibit, but so far difficult to explain. Therefore it represents an ideal topic for a combined Summer School and Workshop, where the phenomenon can be appreciated by participants of diverse backgrounds, who can then bring their own perspectives to bear on the problem.

Zusammenfassung: Microtubules are of fundamental importance for an extraordinary variety of essential processes in all eukaryotic cells. In the 1980s, advances in light microscopy and the discovery of motor proteins catalyzed the expansion of microtubule cytoskeleton research. In the 1990s the discovery of GFP revolutionized the visualization of dynamic cytoskeletal processes inside cells. Over the years and especially recently due to the advent of proteomics, many nteractors of microtubules have been identified and we are approaching an exciting phase where complete knowledge of the components of the microtubule cytoskeleton appears within reach. Therefore, the focus of microtubule cytoskeleton research is moving from identification of components, their characterization in isolation, the consequences of loss of function for intracellular organization and dynamics towards a truly mechanistic description of the entire microtubule system and its regulation.

To achieve a systems-wide understanding of microtubule cytoskeleton behaviour requires a combination of different disciplines including biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology and mathematical modeling, and to exchange concepts developed in different scientific communities like in cell and developmental biology.

This conference aims at providing an overview of contemporary microtubule cytoskeleton research at all complexity levels, from atomic resolution to entire organisms and will be structured as follows:

(1) Molecules interacting with microtubules;
(2) Complex microtubule arrays and cell architecture;
(3) Microtubules in developmental processes and in differentiated structures.

The main objective of the conference is to bring together established scientists with young researchers from all over the world that have recently made exciting contributions to the microtubule field. The broad spectrum of interdisciplinary research approaches that will be represented will provide a unique platform and create a stimulating atmosphere encouraging not only the exchange of new discoveries, but also of novel emerging concepts beyond the limits of traditional disciplines.

Zusammenfassung: Research on C. elegans plays an influential role across biology and has been at the forefront of genetics. Genetic analyses in C. elegans have led to advances in understanding many processes conserved throughout the animal kingdom, including establishment of cell polarity, developmental patterning, cell death, RNA interference, ageing, axon pathfinding, neuronal signaling and many others. Evidence of the impact of C. elegans research is the award of three Nobel prizes and a Lasker Award.

Two types of meetings focus on C. elegans research. The International C. elegans meeting, organised once every two years in the USA, covers all aspects of C. elegans research. The large size (over 2000 attendees) and diversity of the International meeting does not allow easy discussion or interactions among groups who share interest in particular research areas. To fill this gap, C. elegans “Topic meetings” are held in alternate years with the International meetings. These are focused meetings on particular aspects of C. elegans biology. Topic meetings provide a vibrant and exciting arena for discussion of current research, and the sharing of new ideas, methods, and reagents.

Zusammenfassung: Vererbbare Unterschiede zwischen Lebewesen entstehen nicht nur, weil die Gensequenzen sich unterscheiden, sondern auch, weil die gleiche Erbinformation in verschiedenen Zellen und Geweben unterschiedlich abgelesen wird. Abweichende Merkmale entstehen zum Beispiel, weil das gleiche Gen in einem Organismus mehr, im anderen weniger aktiv ist. Die Epigenetik beschäftigt sich mit den biologischen Grundlagen und molekularen Zusammenhängen dieser vererbbaren Veränderung der Genauslesung. Auf der Ebene des Chromatins vererbt die Zelle diese Kontrolle über das Ablesen der Gene über biochemische Veränderung der Chromatinstruktur z.B. Methylierung bestimmter DNA Elemente oder definierte Muster unterschiedlicher Histonmodifizierungen. Epigenetische Effekte spielen bei der Zelldifferenzierung, bei der Entwicklung des Embryos, aber auch wenn Zellen sich krebsartig verändern eine zentrale Rolle. Es werden neben der Methodenentwicklung zur Trennung von Biomolekülen und der Verknüpfung von Methoden auch der Umgang mit präparativen Säulen und Systemen, sowie das Reinigen von chromatographischen Medien besprochen.

Zusammenfassung: Die Sequenzierung von DNA ist heute in vielen Laboren tägliches Geschäft geworden. Im Zeitalter der individuellen Genomprojekte und Mega-Sequenziercenter ist es wichtig zu wissen, was kann ich selbst sequenzieren, was gebe ich außer Haus, was ist Routine und was erfordert mehr Sorgfalt, die ich selbst kontrollieren möchte. Der Kurs stellt Ihnen die historische Entwicklung des DNA-Sequenzierens dar, verweist auf diejenigen alten Methoden die heute noch ihre Berechtigung haben und erläutert die Möglichkeiten moderner HTS-Sequenziercenter. Er bereitet Sie vor, eine eigene Sequenziereinheit aufzubauen bzw. anfallende Probleme mit schwierigen Sequenzierproben zu bewältigen. Der Kurs konzentriert sich auf die Sequenzierung von Plasmiden und PCR-Produkten und Sie bearbeiten den gesamten Prozess von der template-Präparation bis zur Auswertung der Sequenzen mit gängigen Softwarepaketen und Internet-Datenbanken. Zusammenfassung: We are pleased to announce our next Science and Society conference on 5-6 November 2010 at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany. This well-established conference series brings together a wide range of scientists, philosophers, science communicators, policy makers, and members of the public in engaging debate.

In total, four sessions with keynote talks and panel discussions are planned for the two days at the 2010 conference. The first day will be set aside for presenting and discussing questions relevant to the evolution of sexual reproduction, as well as to the development of sex specific traits. For this purpose we are inviting leading scientists to present their field of research, including their own work, to a mixed audience of scientists and non-scientists. Talks in each session will be followed by panel discussions around questions relating to the difference between the sexes from various perspectives.

In the first session of the second day at the meeting the attention will turn to comparative research on sex differences in brain and behavior of various species. Finally, in the fourth and the last session of the conference we will reexamine the relationship between innate versus acquired sexual characteristics in humans, and attempt to assess some familiar questions of differences between the sexes in the light of new knowledge emerging from the life sciences in recent years. As with the past EMBL/EMBO Science and Society conferences, our overall aim is to promote a constructive dialogue between a wide range of professionals and members of the public.
