Brain stimulation methods are rapidly transforming research into how the brain works and are developing into new ways to treat disease. In many ways, the field of brain stimulation is a new paradigm shift, augmenting and sometimes replacing the prominent psychopharmacological paradigm of the past three decades. Currently, there are single theme meetings around the world that are either technique or profession based or that limit the science in other ways. This second international meeting, organized by Elsevier and sponsored by and integrated with the journal Brain Stimulation, will build on the first meeting held in Singapore in 2015. This will thus be the 2nd International Brain Stimulation meeting with forced integration of all the various groups involved in this exciting field.

The emerging field of connectomics comprises extensive efforts to map patterns of brain connectivity, to represent these patterns with the tools of network science, and to explore the relation of brain connectivity and dynamics to behavior and cognition. Importantly, these efforts span multiple scales of brain organization, from synaptic connectivity among individual neurons, to comprehensive maps of circuits, neuronal populations, and projections among brain regions. An integrative multi-scale framework for mapping, analyzing and modeling connectome data sets is lacking. This Keystone Symposia meeting aims to narrow this important gap, by: 1) Fostering scientific exchange among otherwise siloed researchers studying connectomes in different organisms at different scales with different measurement techniques; 2) Promoting approaches that apply across scales, for example by leveraging the tools of network science; 3) Emphasizing the need to move beyond descriptive accounts of connectomes, to model-based prediction and control; 4) Providing a unique opportunity for pre- and postdoctoral trainees to engage with connectomics leaders and present their work. Anticipated outcomes include a multi-scale framework for description, prediction and control of connectomes; innovative computational methods for statistical analysis and modeling of connectome data sets; and new collaborations among participating researchers and trainees. The meeting will have transformative impact by creating new relationships among investigators and by seeding a new integrative research agenda centered on the structure and dynamics of brain connectivity.

A fundamental goal of neuroscience is to understand the molecular, cellular and activity-based mechanisms that control the formation and maintenance of neural circuits and determine how these mechanisms become compromised in neurodevelopmental, psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. Over the past four decades, molecular neuroscientists have identified key molecules and mechanisms that underlie synapse development, activity and stability. Meanwhile, the identification and characterization of different cell types has been transformed by single cell profiling techniques and study of neuronal circuits has been revolutionized by new optical methods to visualize, map and control circuits in living animals. Finally, there has been an explosion in the ability to identify genes associated with neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. Increasingly sophisticated animal models are proving useful to understand how dysfunction of affected genes and proteins contributes to disease pathology. Although researchers in all of these disciplines are studying the same fundamental issues, no small highly interactive “Keystone-style” meetings bring these three groups together in the same room. In the belief that mutually beneficial insights will emerge from discussing each other’s work, this symposium will bring together leaders working on neuronal development, synapse development and plasticity, circuit structure and function, and the study of brain disease.

OVERVIEW

The International Brain Injury Association’s World Congress on Brain Injury is the largest gathering of international professionals working in the field of brain injury (traumatic and acquired, including stroke). The next World Congress will take place March 29 – April 1, 2017, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Over 1400 international delegates attended the World Congress when it was last held in the United States in 2014 in San Francisco.

WHO ATTENDS THE WORLD CONGRESS?

Delegates to the World Congress on Brain Injury are comprised of rehabilitation physicians, neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, psychologists, basic/translational scientists, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, social workers, nurses, case managers, advocates and all other professionals involved in the research or treatment of brain injury and/or stroke.

OUTSTANDING SCIENCE AND EDUCATION

As the seminal event in brain injury, the Congress features an outstanding faculty of internationally recognized speakers delivering platform lectures, panels and workshops. State of the art research is presented dealing with every aspect of brain injury from coma to community. The Congress provides didactic opportunities for researchers and clinicians interested in advancing their knowledge in brain injury science, medicine and care.

In addition to the invited lectures and panels, IBIA welcomes the submission of papers for consideration as oral or poster presentations. The deadline for submitting an abstract is November 7, 2016.

REVIEW PROCESS

The Scientific Planning Committee will review and determine the most appropriate presentation format (oral or poster) for each accepted abstract.

Awards will be given to top scoring posters and oral presentations.

Accepted abstracts will be published in a supplemental issue of IBIA’s official journal, Brain Injury.

This Advanced Course will focus on multi-scale aspects of the connectome – the comprehensive wiring diagram of the brain – and its impact on brain function, behavior and health. Ion channels, receptors, cells and synapses breathe dynamics into this wiring diagram and give rise to sensory responses, perceptions, decisions, memories and actions. Emphasis will be placed on the latest techniques of large-scale data acquisition, analysis, theory, modeling and simulation and aspects that will be covered include: 1) the cellular basis of connectivity including gene expression, morphology and electrophysiology, 2) large-scale data gathering and data analysis of whole brain connectivity across scales including electron microscopy, single neurons, meso-scale viral tracers, diffusion and functional whole brain imaging; 3) data integration of multimodal connectome data; 4) data-driven computational modeling and simulation at different scales of brain circuitry; 5) theoretical analyses of brain network topology and principles of connectivity; 6) the development of the connectome and its link to behavior and neurological disorders; 7) predicting whole brain dynamics from the connectome; 8) wakefulness, sleep and disorders of consciousness: the relationship between the connectome and the diversity of brain states and experiences.

The last two decades have seen a revolutionary change in the dogma suggesting that the CNS operates optimally without any assistance from circulating immune cells. Previously, attempts were made to globally mitigate any immune activity in the brain, assuming such activity was a sign of ongoing pathology. We now know that a continuous dialogue occurs between the brain and the circulation, and that soluble and cellular components derived from the circulation support brain plasticity. The implications of these finding for brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases are becoming critical issues in finding cures for these conditions. Accumulating evidence points to brain reorganization with chronic pain. It seems that the grey matter of the neocortex dynamically changes with chronic pain and this reorganization is pain type specific. In parallel to the anatomical changes, brain functional properties change as well, and the best evidence for condition type functional reorganization is now documented in resting state brain activity, where one can identify a core set of brain networks commonly disturbed with chronic pain, as well as condition specific functional properties. Moreover, brain functional network properties provide a signature for existence and for emergence of chronic pain both in humans as well as in rodent models for pain chronification. It is common clinical knowledge that although a very large patient population presents with similar injuries that give rise to pain, only a small minority of them develop chronic pain. Thus the critical question in the field of pain research is: what characteristics differentiate between those that develop chronic pain and the ones who properly recover from their injury into health. Complimenting the human study there is now evidence in animal models regarding brain reorganization with pain chronification.

The ongoing effort is to understand the underlying pathophysiology in an attempt to identify suitable drug targets. Opportunities have emerged within the stem cell field. Unprecedented advances have been made in our understanding of stem cells and through them much can be learned about the physiology and pathophysiology of the cells that degenerate in different brain disorders with the ultimate goal of delivering therapeutically relevant stem cells that could ameliorate the clinical outcome. Recent ground-breaking developments in neuroscience, such as optogenetics, in vivo 2-photon confocal microscopy, head mounted microscopes, powerful new developments in modeling, behavioral neuroscience approaches, and sophisticated brain imaging tools, have changed dramatically studies of memory. Neuroinflammation comprises the interaction of two formidably complex organ systems. Two considerations motivate this meeting: first that the communities of neuroscientists and immunologists urgently need to formulate and deploy a joint set of concepts to promote mechanistic progress (hence a meeting of the two), and second that neuroinflammation, broadly conceived, operates throughout life from embryogenesis through old age with consequences bearing on the most serious health concerns ranging from autism and schizophrenia to dementia. What’s needed in this field (for example) is for immunologists to acquire a working knowledge of neuroscience (e.g., electrophysiology, neurotransmitters, behavior) and for neuroscientists to become comfortable with the cells, proteins and animating concepts of contemporary immunology. The optimal venue for such exchange lies in the presentation of compelling multidisciplinary research to a joint audience in the Keystone Symposia format. As such, this meeting aims to: 1) Integrate the intrinsic “immune” elements of the CNS (microglia, complement, certain chemokines) into a broader scheme of neurodevelopment and to indicate where aberrant function of these elements might conduce to neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism; 2) Characterize the neuroinflammatory processes which typify aging and integrate this temporal dynamic into the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disease; and 3) Share model systems (particularly invertebrate) and technical innovations which can be particularly powerful for generating mechanistic insights into neuroinflammatory processes.

This SRC is the only meeting of its kind specifically dedicated to the field of photoreceptor biology. The scientific program reflects the multi-disciplinary nature of this field, encompassing classical biochemistry and structural biology as well as modern imaging techniques and molecular therapeutic approaches. Specific session topics will range from photoreceptor physiology and RPE cell biology to the immune respose to photoreceptor degeneration. The scientific program will include two keynote addresses and invited talks, as well as numerous short talks and DataBlitz presentations that will be selected from submitted abstracts. The meeting schedule and venue are designed to present the most exciting scientific advances in an atmosphere that encourages informal interactions and collaborations. All attendees will have the opportunity to present a poster, and optional recreational activities will be available to all participants to foster the exchange of ideas and formulate new collaborations. This Advanced Course will cut across multiple fields of sleep studies and will feature dedicated sessions addressing important emerging areas. Emphasis will be placed on cutting-edge methods and hypotheses for understanding sleep and its effects on cognitive functions, and on how neurophysiological/genetic/imaging approaches can shed light on the functions of sleep and its essential role in maintaining and preserving vigilance, performance, learning and memory. Some of the topics that will be covered include the following: 1) the link between sleep and brain plasticity, with in depth discussion of the ultrastructural, molecular, electrophysiological and behavioral evidence linking synaptic plasticity and learning during wake with sleep need; 2) the discovery of novel brain circuits and cell types involved in sleep regulation; 3) the role of sleep in learning, memory consolidation as well as forgetting; 4) the effects of sleep loss on brain cognitive functions and how these effects depend on a complex interaction between homeostatic and circadian factors; 5) sleep and dreaming, and how the application of new behavioral paradigms and high-density EEG can contribute to the understanding of the occurrence of conscious experiences during sleep. The course will be an interactive, multidisciplinary forum in which participants will discard outdated notions, gain an appreciation for the latest thinking, and develop insights that will help navigate the complexity of sleep research.

Age is the greatest risk factor for multiple neurodegenerative diseases. In that context, the prevailing perception of the aging brain is of linear decline across multiple systems. A diametrically different perspective is that the aging brain is a dynamic adaptive organ that initiates multiple survival systems throughout the aging process. While these adaptations in the aging brain are for the majority of persons beneficial, they can, in vulnerable populations, lead to increased risk of neurodegenerative disease. The systems biology of transition states in normal aging and neurodegeneration provides insights into mechanisms of disease risk and disease progression. Risk of multiple neurodegenerative diseases can emerge during neuroendocrine transitions of aging when gene networks undergo shifts in activation and expression. These risk networks underlie the prodromal phase of neurodegenerative disease. Later, transition states typify the progressive nature of multiple neurodegenerative diseases. Risk for and progression of Alzheimer’s disease are exemplars of both risk that can emerge during neuroendocrine transitions and the transition states of disease progression.
