[ID=628071] Zum Seitenanfang gehen
 OrtMathematical Biosciences Institute, The Ohio State, Vereinigte Staaten
 Zusammenfassung Most solid tumors present as dense fibrotic masses, which suggests that fibroblasts contribute to tumor growth by infiltrating and depositing extracellular matrix proteins. Fibroblasts act in wound healing, angiogenesis and tissue remodeling by releasing growth factors and proteases such as matrix metalloproteinases. Therefore, if the growing tumor can co-opt such fibroblasts it has an unlimited source of many of the fundamental elements required for growth and invasion. The two central themes of this workshop are: - Heterogeneity (be it phenotypic, signaling or genotypic), and - Microenvironment (ECM, nutrients, fibroblasts and immune cells). Since a highly heterogeneous tumor has the potential to adapt to any microenvironment, understanding how interactions between the growing tumor and its microenvironment modulate tumor heterogeneity is critical to unraveling the mechanisms of cancer initiation.

[ID=682204] Zum Seitenanfang gehen
 OrtTel Aviv, Israel
 Zusammenfassung The field of cancer care has evolved over the past 20 years with the development of more aggressive cancer screening programs, improvement in diagnostic testing and more effective treatment options, including the incorporation of novel targeted therapies. As a result, cancer death rates are gradually declining while cancer survivorship is steadily rising. However, these benefits are offset by long term adverse effects. Among them, cardiotoxicity is a leading cause for late morbidity and mortality. While conventional chemotherapy has been known for decades to induce detrimental effects on the heart and peripheral vasculature, the novel agents might also have harmful off-target consequences. Thus, there is an unmet need for intimate collaboration between cardiologists, oncologists and hemato-oncologists. Furthermore, accelerated research of tumor cellular signaling and genetics opens unlimited research interplays between these disciplines. This prompted the development of the new field of cardio-oncology, which is developing worldwide but is still in its infancy in Israel. We herein launch the first International Meeting in Cardio-oncology to be held in Israel.

The meeting will be held annually. It will include international faculty and medical staff as well as scientists and Pharma who will share cutting edge developments in the field, aiming at the development and implementation of strategies for the prevention, early detection and management of cardio-oncological issues.

 Zusammenfassung Recent advances in technology have provided an unprecedented opportunity to develop platforms for implementing precision/personalised medicine in cancer. This conference will discuss the challenges that face us in implementing these approaches. Although our understanding of the pathogenesis of cancer has advanced enormously in recent years, we have only just begun to successfully translate this into improvements in the clinical management of patients. A significant opportunity is offered by the knowledge that cancer cells are ‘addicted’ to certain altered genes, a vulnerability that can be exploited therapeutically. A number of cancer-causing genes have been identified that are recurrently altered and stimulate tumour growth. These ‘driver genes’ correspond to oncogenes (or tumour suppressor genes) that are mutated or deregulated (e.g., amplified), causing the tumour to become dependent on the lesion(s) for survival and/or proliferation.

[ID=628277] Zum Seitenanfang gehen
 OrtMathematical Biosciences Institute, The Ohio State, Vereinigte Staaten
 Zusammenfassung This workshop will encompass a mix of experimentalists and mathematicians. Ideally, the former will be engaged on the production of large datasets on cancer cell proliferation, both at the cell population and single-cell level, and in response to microenvironment perturbations including anti-proliferative drugs. The latter will focus on mathematical models of proliferation and metabolism at several scales, including genetic, signaling and cellular, including a focus on the ability of cancer cell populations to regenerate and reprogram in response to hostile microenvironment and to targeted treatment, ultimately persisting in their proliferative state. Multi-scale models connecting the growth of cultured cancer cells and/or individual tumors to epidemiological data will also be considered. Although tumor growth and cancer cell proliferation have been modeled mathematically for decades, adequate datasets have been scarce and fragmentary due to experimental limitations.

 Zusammenfassung The causative links between genomic and genetic variations and cancer are well documented and have provided a greater understanding of tumorigenesis and cancer progression. Molecular genetic information has been used to derive new therapeutic regimens and has accelerated the development and application of "personalised cancer medicine". There are also an increasing appreciation that epigenetic aberrations that are often directly caused by genetic defects resulting in loss- or gain-of-function of epigenetic-regulators also contribute significantly to cancer onset and progression. Indeed, parallel integration of our knowledge of the cancer genome and epigenome using sophisticated "omics-based" technologies and high throughput functional screening techniques are providing even more tangible links between genetic/genomic aberrations, epigenetic/epigenomic dysregulation and tumorigenesis. This information is being functionally validated using experimental models that accurately reflect the underlying genetic and epigenetic alterations observed in human tumor samples. Moreover, the information is being translated into clinical use through the development of genetic and epigenetic biomarkers of cancer development, evolution, heterogeneity and response to therapeutic intervention. This GRC series focuses on the advances in discovering and validating "driver" mutations in cancer genes, understanding the downstream consequences of these genetic changes on the epigenome and how this information is being best utilized to advance cancer detection, monitoring and therapy.

 Termin 16. Aug 2015 → 21. Aug 2015
[ID=655413] Zum Seitenanfang gehen
 OrtNewry, Vereinigte Staaten
 Zusammenfassung The Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Hormone-Dependent Cancers: Mechanisms to Tailored Therapeutics, will bring together an outstanding faculty of new and more established scientists and translational researchers to explore molecular mechanisms of disease and strategize about new targeted therapies for hormone-dependent cancers. Hormones influence not only breast and prostate cancer, the two most common hormone-dependent cancers, but also have a major impact on less common hormone-sensitive malignancies (e.g. ovary, testes, endometrium) as well as human cancers recently discovered to be hormone sensitive (e.g. lung, liver). Developing a means to more specifically treat and ideally prevent hormone-dependent cancers is of critical importance given the significant impact these malignancies have on human health and the economic burden of disease. An in depth understanding of hormone action in regulating diverse cellular processes, cancer phenotypes and drug responsiveness is essential for the development of effective and well tolerated treatment strategies. The 2015 GRC is designed to maximize interaction between participants, in order to engender creativity and cross-fertilization of ideas across multiple disciplines while fostering mentorship of early career scientists. Scientists and clinicians from both academia and industry with expertise in contemporary ‘omics’, transcriptional control, cell signaling, human disease modeling and clinical translation will provide a stimulating and engaging format for interaction and fruitful exchange of scientific ideas common to overlapping research fields, such that novel concepts emerge, scientific collaborations are formed, and new translational opportunities are revealed.
