On December 10, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the first international recognition that human rights are absolute and inclusive of all, and that they should concern the entire international community. This doctrine has served as the foundation of international human rights law, and it continues to inspire international human rights treaties and declarations, regional conventions, and national constitutions.

Sadly, the work of the Declaration is far from finished. Some of the world's most neglected populations suffer the worst human rights abrogations, as well as the added burdens of disease and malnutrition. Where human rights are ignored, health care tends to be unequal, inadequate, or nonexistent.

Please join us as we examine the progress we have made in the 60 years since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights—and as we look ahead to navigating the roadblocks, contradictions, and challenges to public health and human rights at home and abroad.

Zusammenfassung: Infection as a major cause of cancer incidence and death Despite a considerable proportion of medical research devoted to understanding cancer and its causes, the role of chronic infections in carcinogenesis is frequently overlooked. According to WHO, up to 23 percent of malignancies in developing countries are caused by infectious agents. In developed countries, cancers caused by chronic infections amount to approximately 8 percent of all malignancies.

An infective agent is linked to some of the most common cancers. Helicobacter pylori causes gastric cancer, the second most important cause of cancer death worldwide. Papillomavirus causes the vast majority of cervical cancer, the second most important cause of cancer among women. Liver cancer, caused by hepatitis viruses, ranks sixth in worldwide cancer incidence. Nasopharyngeal cancer, an Epstein-Barr virus associated cancer, is the most common head and neck cancer in Southern China.

Zusammenfassung: Patients turn to alternative, complementary, and integrative medical therapies, which they learn about from support groups, the press, the Internet, and other non-medical sources. They learn that diseases and poor health can be prevented or reversed, and not just treated.

Since many of these therapies are outside mainstream medicine, physicians may not be familiar with these alternative therapies and may be uncomfortable discussing them with their patients or prescribing them.

The objective of this conference is to provide up-to-date scientific information on the use of various popular alternative and complementary medical therapies in the treatment of disease, the prevention of disease, and the promotion of general good health and well-being.

The conference will focus on separating what works from what doesn’t, with evidence-based discussions helping practitioners understand the value and the limitations of these treatments, and how to integrate them into a patient-specific management plan. Identification of disease-causing mutations has provided unprecedented opportunities to develop new and predictive models and move closer to new therapeutic treatments. Technological advances in biochemistry, genomics, proteomics and imaging have facilitated the ability to pose and answer complex questions in complex disease, as well as an appreciation that neurodegenerative diseases have distinct cell death signaling cascades that can share some common molecular events.

Zusammenfassung: The functioning of the nervous system depends on formation of a complex pattern of connections during development. If these connections are subsequently lost through injury or degeneration, axons in the adult CNS fail to regenerate, creating a major clinical challenge. The last several years have seen tremendous progress in identifying molecular mechanisms for axon development and regeneration, although much remains to be learned about these complex processes. Rapid progress is being made in identifying new classes of extracellular regulators, understanding the mechanisms by which this extracellular information is transduced by the neuron into appropriate responses, and learning the underlying molecular logic for the formation of neural connectivity. This meeting will bring together researchers in the fields of axon development, degeneration and regeneration.

Zusammenfassung: The goal of this meeting is to present the most current research on the vasculature by breaking down the blood vessel into individual cells (endothelium, smooth muscle and nerve) and examine the function of organelles (nucleus, ER, plasma membrane) within each cell type. Zusammenfassung: The goal of this Keystone meeting is to bring together both pioneers and newcomers to the neurobiology of the chemical senses to discuss the development and function of neuronal circuits that underlie the perception of odorants, tastants, and pheromones. In the decade since the identification of molecular receptors for chemosensory stimuli, the field is increasingly moving toward questions of how sensory circuits are assembled during development and how they function in mediating chemosensory perception. Researchers are elucidating the molecules and mechanisms that pattern connections from the periphery to the brain. Using electrophysiological and imaging techniques, information processing is being studied mostly at the periphery. However, there is little information about how information is propagated from lower pathways to the cortex (or equivalent) and other higher brain regions.

Zusammenfassung: It has long been known that the interactions between cells and their respective microenvironments are instructive and necessary in proper development. Cell-environment interactions play complex roles in organ homeostasis and, when altered, disease. Increasing evidence now suggests that the microenvironment also modulates critical aspects of the genesis and progression of tumors. For example, initiation, progression and even control of metastasis and latency are governed by these interactions. This modulation is most likely brought about through both genetic and epigenetic mechanisms. Currently, the signaling pathways and mechanisms of regulation are mostly unknown. This conference will bring together leaders in this field to discuss current problems and strategize on the clinical application of new insights.

Zusammenfassung: Image-guided ablation (IGA) has evolved considerably in the last decade into a practical tool for the management of smaller, discrete tumours in many organ systems. The appropriate and effective use of these devices requires an understanding of case selection, image-guidance skills, radiologic follow-up and importantly its place alongside other therapies. ESGAR has therefore brought together an expert multidisciplinary faculty for a two day informal workshop aimed at both priming and enhancing an image-guided ablation service.

The workshop will include multidisciplinary management, open discussion of live cases along with equipment and device familiarisation. Zusammenfassung: The isirv International Symposium is envisioned as the first of an annual series of meeting to work toward identifying best practices in viral respiratory disease surveillance. The continuing occurrence of highly pathogenic avian influenza in humans and outbreaks of diseases such as SARS underscores the critical need to increase the exchange of information between epidemiologic and virologic human viral respiratory disease surveillance networks, and between human and animal surveillance networks. Various forms of unilateral and multilateral collaboration and assistance will be discussed with the goal of bringing developing countries closer to the international surveillance networks. Ongoing annual meetings are proposed to sustain the momentum towards achieving international consensus, as well as practical implementation of surveillance methods consistent with national and/or regional resources.

Zusammenfassung: The discovery of evolutionarily conserved immune genes and pathways has led to an explosive discovery phase in innate immunity. These pathways include TLR, NLR, C-type lectin Receptor, and the helicase-containing anti-viral proteins. These novel pathways merge the innate and adaptive branches of immunity, and converge on a wide range of disorders including infectious diseases, inflammation and autoimmunity. All of the above have systemic effects that can affect the outcome of a wide range of diseases ranging from cancer to cardiovascular disorders.

Zusammenfassung: In Anaesthesiology practice, there have seen an increase in interest in the use of ultrasound guidance for peripheral nerve blockade. In this conference, we would like to take it to the next level i.e. demonstrate the applications of ultrasound for spine and paravertebral interventions in anaesthesia and pain medicine. It put together a group of experts and opinion leaders, from overseas and locally, to deliver and exchange experience and scientific knowledge in this state of the art field of anaesthesia and pain medicine. The symposium will include lectures, expert scanning demonstration sessions, discussions, hands-on workshops, and exhibition of the latest equipment, drugs, and products.

The format for this course is hands-on training using workstations loaded with approximately 25-40 'endoscopically proven' data sets, chosen to include a mix of normals, abnormals and pitfalls.
