21 Nov 2008 → 22 Nov 2008; New York, États-Unis
Organisateur: New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS)

Résumé: What makes suicide bombers capable of sacrificing themselves for a belief? Why do members of one race believe they are superior to another? How do subliminal messages affect the outcome of political polling? Using the tools of neuroscience and social science, researchers have learned a great deal about the brain's role in human behavior and interactions. This November, international scientific leaders and young investigators will convene for the first Barcelona Social Brain Conference, an exciting two-day event featuring talks, poster presentations, and a public lecture on the interdisciplinary field of social neuroscience. Through a neuroscientific lens, participants will examine the human qualities of empathy, sacred values, and cooperation, and focus on the ways in which what they learn can be used to understand human conflicts.

14.haut de la page[ID=198079]Public Health and Human Rights: The Work Ahead of Us
05 Dec 2008; New York, États-Unis

Résumé: The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is partnering with The New York Academy of Sciences for the 2nd year to host a half-day symposium to evaluate progress in public health and human rights on the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

On December 10, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the first international recognition that human rights are absolute and inclusive of all, and that they should concern the entire international community. This doctrine has served as the foundation of international human rights law, and it continues to inspire international human rights treaties and declarations, regional conventions, and national constitutions.

Sadly, the work of the Declaration is far from finished. Some of the world's most neglected populations suffer the worst human rights abrogations, as well as the added burdens of disease and malnutrition. Where human rights are ignored, health care tends to be unequal, inadequate, or nonexistent.

Please join us as we examine the progress we have made in the 60 years since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights—and as we look ahead to navigating the roadblocks, contradictions, and challenges to public health and human rights at home and abroad.

15.haut de la page[ID=180647]Hong Kong Cancer Institute/AACR International Conference on Infection and Cancer: Biology, Therapeutics, and Prevention (in conjunction with the Chinese University of Hong Kong)
05 Dec 2008 → 07 Dec 2008; Hong Kong, Chine

Résumé: Infection as a major cause of cancer incidence and death Despite a considerable proportion of medical research devoted to understanding cancer and its causes, the role of chronic infections in carcinogenesis is frequently overlooked. According to WHO, up to 23 percent of malignancies in developing countries are caused by infectious agents. In developed countries, cancers caused by chronic infections amount to approximately 8 percent of all malignancies.

An infective agent is linked to some of the most common cancers. Helicobacter pylori causes gastric cancer, the second most important cause of cancer death worldwide. Papillomavirus causes the vast majority of cervical cancer, the second most important cause of cancer among women. Liver cancer, caused by hepatitis viruses, ranks sixth in worldwide cancer incidence. Nasopharyngeal cancer, an Epstein-Barr virus associated cancer, is the most common head and neck cancer in Southern China.

16.haut de la page[ID=206858]7th Annual Dr. Roizen's Complementary Alternative Medicine Conferene - The Science and the Art of Non-Traditional Medical Therapies from Cleveland Clinic and Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group
05 Dec 2008 → 07 Dec 2008; Chicago, IL, États-Unis

Résumé: Patients turn to alternative, complementary, and integrative medical therapies, which they learn about from support groups, the press, the Internet, and other non-medical sources. They learn that diseases and poor health can be prevented or reversed, and not just treated.

Since many of these therapies are outside mainstream medicine, physicians may not be familiar with these alternative therapies and may be uncomfortable discussing them with their patients or prescribing them.

The objective of this conference is to provide up-to-date scientific information on the use of various popular alternative and complementary medical therapies in the treatment of disease, the prevention of disease, and the promotion of general good health and well-being.

The conference will focus on separating what works from what doesn’t, with evidence-based discussions helping practitioners understand the value and the limitations of these treatments, and how to integrate them into a patient-specific management plan. By narrowing the educational gap among practitioners regarding these therapies, this program will ultimately translate into improved patient outcomes.

Co-Sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic and Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group, the conference is designed to be an exciting, provocative, and educational forum.

Sujets: This educational activity is designed for complementary alternative medical therapy professionals, family and general practitioners, internists, obstetricians and gynecologists, anesthesiologists, acupuncturists, pain managers and therapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, nurses, nurse practitioners, dietitians, physical therapists, physician assistants, and other interested professions.

18 Jan 2009 → 23 Aou 2009; Galveston, TX, États-Unis

Résumé: There are numerous challenges in developing defenses, particularly medical countermeasures, or detection systems, to address biological or chemical threats. If the products or systems address only a particular agent, and have no other application, the cost of development and preparedness is enormously high relative to the perceived benefit of having these tools at hand. This Conference will focus on an array of topics in which new research has been focused on broad spectrum and platform technology approaches to discovering and developing defenses for biological and chemical threats that both leverage and integrate "everyday" applications.

12 Mar 2009 → 14 Mar 2009; New York, États-Unis
Organisateur: New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS)

Résumé: Ask any mountain climber or deep-sea diver: when it comes to oxygen deprivation, timing is everything. The body is not only affected by how long it goes without oxygen, but also by the time it takes for its cells to react to this shortage of oxygen, also known as hypoxia. Both rapid and delayed responses have a profound impact on normal physiological function, and on the progression of diseases such as pulmonary hypertension, sleep apnea, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders.

Join us for this exploration of transcriptional and pathophysiological responses to hypoxia, and of the sensing mechanisms responsible for detection of oxygen level changes in the body.

Résumé: Image-guided ablation (IGA) has evolved considerably in the last decade into a practical tool for the management of smaller, discrete tumours in many organ systems. The appropriate and effective use of these devices requires an understanding of case selection, image-guidance skills, radiologic follow-up and importantly its place alongside other therapies. ESGAR has therefore brought together an expert multidisciplinary faculty for a two day informal workshop aimed at both priming and enhancing an image-guided ablation service.

The workshop will include multidisciplinary management, open discussion of live cases along with equipment and device familiarisation. Delegate members are limited to forty so as to enhance the learning experience. If your interventional service is seeking to expand in this area early application is advised.

Résumé: This second EMBO Conference of the series “Signaling in the immune system” will explore the nature and complexity of intracellular and intercellular signals which determine lymphocyte development and differentiation. The conference will be focused on the mechanistic and topological orchestration of signaling by antigen receptors and costimulatory receptors, and their integration with the cytokine receptor networks which drive lymphocyte committment to a specific lineage or differentiation to a specific type of effector. Understanding these processes is probably the most daunting task in modern immunology, requiring the development of highly sophisticated formal modeling and experimental tools. The principal objective of the conference is to contribute to filling this gap by providing a critical assessment of the state-of-the-art in this rapidly moving area.
