ESI Workshop — Exactly Solvable Models
24 Jul 2024 - 26 Jul 2024 • Vienna, Austria
Organizer:
Erwin Schrödinger International Institute for Mathematics and Physics (ESI)
Abstract:
Exactly Solvable Models play a central role in mathematical physics. They also receive considerable interest by mathematicians with different specializations such as combinatorics, representation theory, differential geometry, or the modern theory of special functions. The aim of the workshop is to bring together experts from different research directions on exactly solvable or integrable systems. We hope this will help to share knowledge about recent developments and about methods and techniques. In particular, this workshop is dedicated to Harald Grosse, who has contributed significantly to exactly solvable models.

ESI Workshop — Spin-Orbit Entangled Quantum Magnetism
23 Sep 2024 - 27 Sep 2024 • Vienna, Austria
Organizer:
Erwin Schrödinger International Institute for Mathematics and Physics (ESI)
Abstract:
It is the goal of this workshop to assemble both leading experts and younger researches on spin-orbit entangled magnetism from different domains – theoreticians of both DFT and MBEH leaning as well as experimentalists – to review the current progress in the field and, most importantly, to foster the mutual collaboration and synergy between theory and experiments to address and define actual challenges and future research directions. Focus session on: double perovskites, pyrochlores, Kitaev/honeycomb, candidate spin-liquid materials, multiferroics, 2D magnetism.

ESI Workshop — Algebraicity and Transcendence for Singular Differential Equations
07 Oct 2024 - 19 Oct 2024 • Vienna, Austria
Organizer:
Erwin Schrödinger International Institute for Mathematics and Physics (ESI)
Abstract:
The format of this two-weeks event is audience-oriented: Instead of having a sequel of very specialized talks on the speaker's own favorite research theme we plan to design a list of topics and techniques of general interest from which the participants can learn in order to enrich and facilitate their own work. In this spirit, speakers are asked to prepare material suggested by the organizers (but of course coordinated with them) and to present it in an accessible manner enabling a deeper understanding of the main aspects.

ESI Workshop — Lensing and Wave Optics in Strong Gravity
09 Dec 2024 - 13 Dec 2024 • Vienna, Austria
Organizer:
Erwin Schrödinger International Institute for Mathematics and Physics (ESI)
Abstract:
Gravitational lensing represents a characteristic feature of astrophysical systems in strong gravitational fields, such as the supermassive black holes recently observed by the Event Horizon Telescope. On the other hand, strong gravitational fields are also being probed by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observations of gravitational waves. With the rapidly increasing number of observed gravitational waves, it is expected that a small portion of these events will be gravitationally lensed. This workshop aims to bring together members of the astrophysical community working on lensing and wave effects in strong gravitational fields and to discuss physics relevant for both the Event Horizon Telescope and LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observations. We plan to discuss the current open problems and perspectives in the field, facilitate the transfer of techniques between the much more mature field of lensing of electromagnetic waves towards novel studies in the lensing of gravitational waves, as well as to see how wave effects beyond the standard lensing approaches could be incorporated.

Thematic Programme — Infinite-dimensional Geometry: Theory and Applications
13 Jan 2025 - 14 Feb 2025 • Vienna, Austria
Organizer:
Erwin Schrödinger International Institute for Mathematics and Physics (ESI)
Abstract:
The aim of the project is to reinforce the collaboration between scientists from austrian research institutions and international institutions around the topic of infinite dimensional geometry. Direct applications of the theoretical aspects of infinite dimensional geometry to numerical schemes for solving partial differential equations coming from hydrodynamics, as well as medical applications of shape analysis are part of the program. The programme will last five 5 weeks, each devoted to different topic ranging from abstract theoretical questions to very concrete applications (e.g. medical).
