01 Sep 2008; Nottingham, United Kingdom

abstract: Healthcare workers in all departments are expected continuously to improve the quality, timeliness, and cost of their services to the community. Six Sigma is a management methodology which combines the waste and complexity reduction of lean manufacturing with quality improvement and statistical data analysis. Six Sigma is producing some important results in the healthcare arena in terms of improvement of services, breakthroughs in understanding and agreement, and new ways of working. Six Sigma and the twin methodology of Lean Six Sigma appeal to the practical enthusiasm of healthcare workers to get more for their patients and increase the effectiveness of the services they provide. This workshop details the history of Six Sigma, describes what it is and shows how it is implemented via case studies from healthcare providers in the US, Israel and UK.

01 Sep 2008 → 12 Sep 2008; London, United Kingdom

abstract: Our understanding of infectious-disease epidemiology and control has been greatly increased in recent years through mathematical modelling. Insights from this increasingly-important and exciting field are now informing policymaking at the highest levels, for pandemic influenza, SARS, HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, foot-and-mouth disease and other infections.

This course is the ideal introduction for mathematical modellers who are considering entering this exciting field, and many past participants have been mathematicians. Course teachers have backgrounds in mathematics, physics, statistics, molecular biology, microbiology, and epidemiology, and are highly experienced in multi-disciplinary collaboration. The course emphasises how to express biological and clinical principles mathematically, and how to interpret results from a biological and clinical perspective.

Since 1990, this short course has introduced epidemiological modelling to public-health professionals, policy makers, and medical and veterinary researchers, and kept them up-to-date with what they need to know about this fast-moving field. It is taught by active researchers in the world-leading Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, which advises public health agencies, governments, international organisations, and pharmaceutical companies, and hosts the MRC Centre for Outbreak Analysis & Modelling, UNAIDS Epidemiology Reference Group secretariat, Partnership for Child Development, and the Gates Foundation-funded Schistosomiasis Control Initiative that has treated over 12 million children to date in six countries in Africa.

topics: Infectious diseases and mathematical models, models and policy, interventions against HIV, schistosomiasis: from models to data, designing infectious-disease models, estimating key parameters from an outbreak of influenza, HIV, UNAIDS and models for a global pandemic, introduction to stochasticity

16 Dec 2008 → 18 Dec 2008; Cirencester, United Kingdom
organizer: The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications

abstract: Signal processing constitutes an important area for the application of mathematical concepts and techniques fuelled, for example, by developments in mobile communications, multimedia systems and digital TV. The subject is still advancing rapidly in areas such as non-linear/non-Gaussian/non-stationary signal processing, digital communication systems, iterative estimation (e.g. turbo codes), blind deconvolution/signal separation and broadband systems. The last IMA conference on this subject was held in December 2006 and in response to popular demand, the next one will be held at the same location in December 2008. The aim of the conference is to bring together mathematicians, statisticians and engineers with a view to exploring recent developments and identifying fruitful avenues for further research. It is hoped that the meeting will help to attract more mathematicians into this important and challenging field.
