Starting with Boltzmann’s seminal idea of describing the dynamics of a large system of interacting particles by its statistical distribution, kinetic theory has become a powerful tool to model for example the transport of charged carriers in plasma and semiconductor crystals or the herding behavior of large animal flocks. More recently kinetic theory made its way into socio-economic applications, for instance to describe the dynamics of trading agents in economic markets. Various mathematical and computational techniques have been developed in the respective fields to analyze the complex behavior of large interacting particles systems. However many questions in classical as well as novel applications are still open. The workshop will bring together experts working on different aspects of kinetic theory to facilitate exchange, advance further in the field and promote novel research directions.

The Mathematical Institute of Charles University organizes already the fourth workshop entitled "Regularity theory for elliptic and parabolic systems and problems in continuum mechanics" We have established a tradition of a small workhop with excellent speakers about the regularity issues in complicated systems in continuum mechanics and related topics and the first workshop on this topic was held in Telc in 2014 and followed by two other ones in 2016 and 2018. The meeting Regularity theory for elliptic and parabolic systems and problems in continuum mechanics is organized as a part of this research project. The aim of the meeting is to bring together researchers working in the field of regularity of partial differential equations with a particular emphasis on partial differential equations stemming from continuum mechanics.

2 Day Workshop at BIRS — Canadian Abstract Harmonic Analysis Symposium

Abstract harmonic analysis has evolved out of classical Fourier analysis; it deals with locally compact groups, their representations, and the Banach algebras associated with them. Abstract harmonic analysis has had a strong presence in Canada's mathematical community for several decades. Since 1997, the Canadian Abstract Harmonic Analysis Symposium has been successful in bringing together researchers, from Canada and abroad, in abstract harmonic analysis and related areas, such as Banach algebras, operator algebras, and operator spaces. This meeting will continue this tradition and provide a forum for researchers in the area for fruitful interaction. This particular meeting will also pay tribute to Anthony To-Ming Lau, a major contributor to the area over decades, who will retire effective June 30, 2020.

In spite of its flexibility, computing nonlinear problems in random media is very expensive. Hence, in practice, it is needed to consider environments which are small random perturbations of periodic ones, and then to obtain some asymptotic expansion for the ergodic constants. Concrete examples of such phenomena that relate to Hamilton-Jacobi equations are large deviations, front propagation and random walks in random media. The latter strengthens the connection with probability.

CIRM – Research in Pairs — Relative Differential - or Tamarkin-Tsygan - Calculus. Han’s Conjecture.

The differential – or Tamarkin-Tsygan calculus – of an associative algebra provides rich information about the algebra, it englobes Hochschild (co)homology with its algebraic structure and the Connes differential. It has been proven recently by Armenta and Keller that it is a derived invariant. On the other hand a relative version of Hochschild cohomology exists from long, it has been rarely used because of the lack of relation with the usual theory. Kaygun has obtained in 2012 a long exact sequence relying the theories. A main purpose will be to determine if a relative differential – or Tamarkin-Tsygan – calculus exists, in particular a relative Connes differential and to establish a Jacobi-Zariski-like relation with the usual calculus.

​Our second aim is to show that the class of algebras satisfying Han’s conjecture is closed under split extensions of algebras by any multiplicative bimodule which is just of finite projective dimension and tensor nilpotent.

Partial differential equations arise ubiquitously as laws of physics and other mathematical models across the scientific and engineering disciplines. The solutions to these equations describe the behavior of the systems modeled by the equations, but very often the solutions are too complicated to be found exactly. As an example from one of many disciplines, equations governing the flow of liquids or gases can be simple to write down, but solutions corresponding to extremely intricate turbulent motions of the fluids are impossible to find. One approach in such cases is to use powerful computers to approximate single solutions. A second complementary approach is to seek mathematical statements that give only partial information about solutions but that apply broadly to all possible solutions. This Focused Research Group aims to improve and apply methods that take the latter approach. This will be done by using recently developed tools from the field of optimization to solve research questions in the field of partial differential equations. This requires bringing together researchers in both of these largely separate mathematical disciplines, which is made possible by the BIRS Focused Research Group program.

Free boundaries and moving interfaces are ubiquitous in our daily activities such as pouring red wine into a glass, jumping into a swimming pool, or watching water waves at the beach. Other processes involving interfaces are much less visible, but have great impacts on our lives. For example, one mechanism by which cancel cells move around is to change the shape of their boundaries. As another example, three major components in our blood are the red cells, the white cells, and platelets; injure of blood vessels will trigger complicated chemical reactions and physical processes that occur on the interface of these cells. It is therefore extremely important to solve key problems in this scientific field so that we can save money, energy, time, and even human lives. One major tool for sciences in this field is through mathematical modeling and numerical computations. This workshop aims to bring together experts from various disciplines to work together on the analysis, modeling, computation, and applications of a wide range of free-boundary and moving-interface problems. It is our hope that scientific discoveries in this field could make this world better.

The goal of this conference is to promote recent advances in Numerical Analysis related to Stochastic Partial Differential Equations and/or random processes and their applications. It covers various domains from simulation and analysis of numerical methods for PDE, SDE or SPDE, to propagation of uncertainty and the development of efficient simulation methods for random processes.

5 Day Workshop at BIRS — Algebraic Dynamics and its Connections to Difference and Differential Equations

Zusammenfassung:
The field of algebraic dynamics has emerged over the past two decades at the confluence of algebraic geometry, discrete dynamical systems, and diophantine geometry. In recent work, striking connections have been observed between algebraic dynamics and much older theories of difference and differential equations. This meeting brings together mathematicians with expertise in such diverse fields as ring theory, complex dynamics, differential and difference algebra, combinatorics and algebraic geometry. New work towards the dynamical Mordell-Lang and dense orbit conjectures as well as theorems on hypertranscendence and functional independence proven by connecting difference Galois theory, algebraic dynamics and other algebraic approaches to the study offunctional equations will be presented at this meeting.
