Partial differential equations arise ubiquitously as laws of physics and other mathematical models across the scientific and engineering disciplines. The solutions to these equations describe the behavior of the systems modeled by the equations, but very often the solutions are too complicated to be found exactly. As an example from one of many disciplines, equations governing the flow of liquids or gases can be simple to write down, but solutions corresponding to extremely intricate turbulent motions of the fluids are impossible to find. One approach in such cases is to use powerful computers to approximate single solutions. A second complementary approach is to seek mathematical statements that give only partial information about solutions but that apply broadly to all possible solutions. This Focused Research Group aims to improve and apply methods that take the latter approach. This will be done by using recently developed tools from the field of optimization to solve research questions in the field of partial differential equations. This requires bringing together researchers in both of these largely separate mathematical disciplines, which is made possible by the BIRS Focused Research Group program.

Free boundaries and moving interfaces are ubiquitous in our daily activities such as pouring red wine into a glass, jumping into a swimming pool, or watching water waves at the beach. Other processes involving interfaces are much less visible, but have great impacts on our lives. For example, one mechanism by which cancel cells move around is to change the shape of their boundaries. As another example, three major components in our blood are the red cells, the white cells, and platelets; injure of blood vessels will trigger complicated chemical reactions and physical processes that occur on the interface of these cells. It is therefore extremely important to solve key problems in this scientific field so that we can save money, energy, time, and even human lives. One major tool for sciences in this field is through mathematical modeling and numerical computations. This workshop aims to bring together experts from various disciplines to work together on the analysis, modeling, computation, and applications of a wide range of free-boundary and moving-interface problems. It is our hope that scientific discoveries in this field could make this world better.

The field of algebraic dynamics has emerged over the past two decades at the confluence of algebraic geometry, discrete dynamical systems, and diophantine geometry. In recent work, striking connections have been observed between algebraic dynamics and much older theories of difference and differential equations. This meeting brings together mathematicians with expertise in such diverse fields as ring theory, complex dynamics, differential and difference algebra, combinatorics and algebraic geometry. New work towards the dynamical Mordell-Lang and dense orbit conjectures as well as theorems on hypertranscendence and functional independence proven by connecting difference Galois theory, algebraic dynamics and other algebraic approaches to the study offunctional equations will be presented at this meeting.

The primary motivation for the meetings was driven by the existing lack of synergy between mathematicians and mathematical physicists interested in theoretical aspects of the newly developing fields of modern physical phenomena described by non-self-adjoint operators (non-Hermitian quantum mechanics, metamaterials, repeated interaction quantum systems, superconductivity, etc.). The series has been successful in gathering scientists from different communities who would not ordinarily interact in the same conference. In the forthcoming event we intend to continue with this purpose and, as in past events, we wish to bring together world class specialists in Mathematical Physics, Microlocal and Semiclassical Analysis, Dynamical Systems, Harmonic Analysis, Evolution PDEs and Stochastic Processes.

Partial differential equations (PDE) are a rich and deep area of mathematics which is strongly motivated by problems arising in applied sciences and technology, such as physics, engineering, medicine. Most physical phenomena appearing in reality can indeed be modeled through PDE. Unfortunatley, explicit solutions to PDE can only be determined in very few special cases. On the other hand, it is often possible to describe some relevant qualitative and quantitative properties of theirs. This theoretical analysis enables, for instance, to develop effective numerical approximation methods for solutions. The workshop focuses on some fundamental aspects of the theory of PDE, including existence of solutions, their regularity and a priori estimates. Information on these issues allows for a deeper understanding of the structure of solutions and of the physical phenomena that they describe. They will be addressed in connection with some of the most advanced developments of the theory of PDE, that rely upon methods and results from Nonlinear Potential Theory, Harmonic Analysis, Geometric Analysis.
