RESEARCH SCHOOL — Coulomb Gas, Integrability and Painlevé Equations
11. Mär 2019 - 15. Mär 2019 • CIRM Luminy, Marseille, Frankreich
Zusammenfassung:
Nonlinear integrable systems and their solutions form the core of modern mathematical physics. In recent years, Painlevé's equations have emerged as the core of special function theory. Painlevé equations can be derived from integrable PDEs after scaling reductions. They are also obtained in the matching of asymptotic expansions in the quest to describe critical behaviour in solutions to Hamiltonian PDEs. In this case they play the same role as the Airy function or the Pearcey integral play in the study of the semiclassical limit of the linear Schrodinger equation. Increasingly, as nonlinear science develops, solutions to an extraordinary broas array of scientific problems can be expressed in terms of Painlev? transcendents. The aim of this reserach school is to bring together PhD. students, Postdocs and junior faculty members to focus on the new developements in these fertile lines of research. The proposed format is 4 lectures a day and a free afternoon for discussions.

Workshop I: Geometric Processing
01. Apr 2019 - 05. Apr 2019 • Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM),, Vereinigte Staaten
Zusammenfassung:
Over the last few decades, it has become common to treat data as samples belonging to geometric manifolds or more general nonlinear metric spaces. Together with increasing computer power, this has opened the way to new acquisition and representation methods, and to new data processing techniques; leading to very challenging theoretical and practical questions which require an interplay between differential and metric geometries, optimization, PDEs, stochastic analysis, and computer science. This workshop aims to bring together leading experts in these fields and young researchers to exchange ideas, create synergies, and enhance current and outline future directions of research.

Microlocal Analysis and Applications
17. Jun 2019 - 21. Jun 2019 • Fudan University, Shanghai, China
Zusammenfassung:
Microlocal analysis originated in the 1950s from the use of Fourier transform techniques in the study of variable-coefficient PDEs; its intellectual roots lie in geometric optics and the WKB approximation. The field took on a coherent identity starting in the 1960s with the development of pseudodifferential and, later, Fourier integral operators as fundamental tools. Since then, microlocal analysis has seen a remarkable variety of applications across pure and applied mathematics and physics. Within the last several years, the field has witnessed both striking breakthroughs on known microlocal problems and spectacular new results in areas where microlocal analysis had not previously been viewed as a natural tool. The conference will explore applications in areas as diverse as inverse problems, general relativity, classical dynamics, and quantum chaos, and should be of interest to researchers in many areas of PDE, geometry, and mathematical physics.

Harmonic analysis and operator theory are two modern and active domains of research in mathematics whose roots are firmly imbedded in classical theories. More recently, both fields have seen rapid growth by expanding into wider areas both in the abstract (quantum groups, operator spaces and algebras) and applied (time-frequency analysis, wavelets, systems theory) directions, and interconnections between them have developed. This workshop aims to bring together leading international specialists in the two fields with established and young mathematicians, and explore common problems and techniques of current interest.

Long Program — High Dimensional Hamilton-Jacobi PDEs
09. Mär 2020 - 12. Jun 2020 • Los Angeles, CA, Vereinigte Staaten
Veranstalter:
Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM), UCLA
Zusammenfassung:
Applications that involve HJ PDEs in a high-dimensional (and possibly infinite-dimensional) setting lead to challenging computational problems. Although a large literature is available on HJ PDEs, many challenges remain both from a mathematical and computational point of view. The program will open with one week of tutorials, presented by some of the main organizers. These tutorials will provide an introduction to the major themes of the entire program and connect the themes of the four workshops. The goal is to introduce a common language and build a foundation for the participants of this program who have diverse scientific backgrounds. During the weeks between workshops, participants in residence will develop collaborations; we expect fruitful discussions especially between domain scientists, algorithm developers and pure and applied mathematicians.

Zusammenfassung:
In spite of its flexibility, computing nonlinear problems in random media is very expensive. Hence, in practice, it is needed to consider environments which are small random perturbations of periodic ones, and then to obtain some asymptotic expansion for the ergodic constants. Concrete examples of such phenomena that relate to Hamilton-Jacobi equations are large deviations, front propagation and random walks in random media. The latter strengthens the connection with probability.
