IICAPH2021 — "Extracting the Past from the Present": International and Interdisciplinary Conference on African Precolonial History
01 mar 2021 - 05 mar 2021 • Université libre de Bruxelles, Belgique
Résumé:
Scholars of the African precolonial past come from many disciplines: history, archaeology, linguistics, genetics, palaeoenvironmental studies, and maybe we did not even mention your special scientific field. We use different methods and different datasets. Still, we have a common goal: the study of African precolonial history. Collaborations between various disciplines become ever more recurrent, but often remain project-bound and/or linked to specific topics or regions. We aim at offering an opportunity to discuss with peers facing the same research challenges, yet in different regions in Africa, in other periods and/or regarding different topics, within the setting of an international and interdisciplinary conference on African precolonial history.

The Acoustics of Ancient Theatres
01 sep 2021 - 03 sep 2021 • Verona, Italie
Organisateur:
Acoustical Society of Italy (AIA) and the European Acoustics Association (E.A.A.)
Résumé:
The Symposium on The Acoustics of Ancient Theatres, the second on this topic after the one held in Patras (Greece) in 2011, aims to bring together experts to present and discuss all aspects related to the acoustic properties of these monuments which are often still used for public performances including opera, drama, speech and music. The evolution and development of new technologies for the multichannel measurement systems, together with acoustic simulations, auralisation methods and virtual reconstructions, have generated renewed interest in these spaces. These aspects, as well as more interdisciplinary studies, will be presented and discussed. The event will be included among the initiatives of the International Year of Sound (IYS 2020) promoted by the International Commission for Acoustics (ICA).

14C and Diet — 3rd Radiocarbon & Diet Conference
13 sep 2021 - 16 sep 2021 • Oxford, Royaume-Uni
Organisateur:
Oxford University, School of Archaeology
Résumé:
As in previous meetings the major focus of this workshop will be on aspects of past dietary adaptations of prehistoric human groups and the application of radiocarbon, coupled with stable isotopes that gives insight into past diet. There is growing awareness of the link between radiocarbon variation and dietary choice and the influence on the construction of reliable chronologies. We welcome presentations which apply diet-related stable isotopes to the archaeological past, including carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen and sulphur, and link this with radiocarbon dating to understand more fully the chronology of sites and regions.

The Once and Future English
10 mar 2022 - 12 mar 2022 • Londres, Royaume-Uni
Organisateur:
University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, USA
Résumé:
This conference begins with the notion that English is today used by about 1.5 billion people, less than a third of whom speak it as their first language. This minority-majority reversal has significantly impacted the grammatical characteristics of English, the demographics of the Anglophone population, the domains in which English is used, and attitudes towards the language, which has been described both as a venue for increased global communication and as a cultural and economic predator. The history of the language is being rewritten as well, from one defined by conventional periodization and the triumph of English as a Germanic language, to one that has reoriented the historical and contemporary significance of the language’s traditional homelands. The Once and Future English asks the question: How will English’s present and past look to future speakers?

SHA 2023 — Conference on Historical and Underwater Archaeology
06 jan 2023 - 09 jan 2023 • Lisbonne, Portugal
Organisateur:
The Society for Historical Archaeology
Résumé:
The proposed theme for the conference not only references the international location and outlook of the meeting alongside the modern history of Lisbon as the center of one of the most significant global European empires of the early modern period, but also acknowledges the transformation of historical archaeology into a truly global discipline. It is envisioned that the theme will encourage individual papers and symposia that address the increasingly global character of the discipline in the past, present and future, as well as themes of movement and diaspora, and industrialization and mechanization. Many European archaeologists also define ‘historical’ archaeology differently, noting that the historical record dates back to earlier periods, and this conference may provide the opportunity to explore disciplinary definitions in a global context while still focusing on the post-1500 world.
