The application of quantum mechanics to the social sciences has led to useful insights, especially in the areas of experimental decision-making and behavioral economics. A few years ago, the Fields Institute hosted a workshop on this topic entitled ‘Quantum Probability and the Mathematical Modelling of Decision Making’. In this forthcoming workshop we ask ourselves a fundamental question: what is the key tenet, which rationalizes why quantum theory in social science and especially in social choice and decision-making can be used? This is a central question which has not been previously answered. The concept of ‘unicity’ essentially indicates that a single framework can describe all observed events. However, in decision-making there is no reason to believe there is only one framework, which can capture all events. It was recently discovered that the impossibility of finding a single framework to describe all observed events is the same as the paradox of social choice. Hence, the close connection between economics and quantum theory and this workshop will bring together experts from physics, social sciences and different backgrounds to address this close connection.

In the last decade Digital Methods established themselves as the main methodological paradigm for studying the Internet from a sociological perspective. Over the years, thanks to Digital Methods, scholars have cast light upon several key and emerging socio-cultural phenomena such as, like economy, echo-chambers, the platformization of the Web, social bots, fake news (just to name a few). Since the beginning, Digital Methods privileged politics as their main field of research -intended as both the politics of the medium (e.g. algorithms) and politics within the medium (e.g. climate change). Curiously enough, consumption and consumer culture received scarce attention within Digital Methods studies. This amounts to be a notable gap, since consumption is not simply one topic among the others that might be interesting to explore through Digital Methods, but rather a key phenomenon that underpins the logic of functioning of the contemporary digital landscape. Consider for example that, among the top applications that dominate the contemporary 2.0 Web (as well as govern its functioning), there are (private) companies like Google, Facebook, Amazon, Uber and Airbnb, whose business models consist in extracting data from consumers in order to deliver them consumer products, experiences and advertising. Moreover, most of the more interesting current consumer phenomena are natively digital, such as self-branding, influencer marketing or brand publics. Nevertheless, few consumer culture and marketing scholars addressed those phenomena by using Digital Methods. Indeed, a more systematic focus on Digital Methods and Consumer Studies means advancing both the disciplines.

Ever since the publication of the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) report by Goldman Sachs in 2001, the debate about the role of so-called developing emerging countries versus the supposed developed countries in shaping global business has gathered momentum. A revised version of the same report entitled BRICs and Beyond by the same authors, with upward revision of certain growth projections, has added further fuel to the debate so much so that by now, most countries have accepted that the world economy is in transition. A second wave of nations, the MINTs (Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey) have also been mooted as ones to watch, whilst the ramifications of the global financial crisis of 2008 has caused many of the established economic orthodoxies to be both questioned and challenged. In addition geo-political considerations combined with anxieties over energy, water and fuel security have raised serious questions about policy, future strategy and the merits and demerits of globalization.

It is entirely understandable that such a changing economic dynamic calls for fresh thinking towards the formulation of policies examining macroeconomic stability as well as framing of strategies by firms irrespective of their sizes. Multinationals and SMEs, all will be involved in formulating strategies in order to survive, compete and grow. There is intense pressure on both governments and businesses to perform and deliver. In such a scenario, alternative and maybe radical policies and strategies will need to be thought out and placed before the decision making bodies. New technology, changing demographics and the need to meet the demands of diverse stakeholders ensures that for policy makers and practitioners alike these are indeed challenging times. We all need to be receptive to new ideas. Sadly in some respects many of us have allowed ourselves to become ideologically/intellectually cocooned, so much so that some of us have yet to comprehend how the likes of the Brexit result and similar momentous events came about. This conference is an important opportunity to broaden our horizons.
