European Association for Studies of Australia (EASA) International Conference
29 mar 2021 - 01 avr 2021 • University of Naples, Italie
Organisateur:
European Association for Studies of Australia (EASA)
Résumé:
Australia may be defined as a society increasingly preoccupied yet also gambling with the future, a worry or denial which is closely connected to the notion of risk as a systematic way of dealing with, inducing and introducing hazards and insecurities. Apocalyptic speculations about future events are often employed in regard to feared scapegoats, such as climate change, migrants and Indigenous peoples, who are blamed for threatening or damaging society. Denial and scepticism have become the resort of political and social movements, yet fear and anxiety are perhaps the dominant affective modes of expressing one’s attachment to the Australian community or nation.

ISLE 6
02 jui 2021 - 05 jui 2021 • Joensuu, n’importe où (en ligne)
Organisateur:
ISLE 6 will be hosted by the University of Eastern Finland School of Humanities.
Résumé:
Digitalization is undoubtedly one of the great revolutions in human history. Technologization and digitalization make it possible that massive amounts of linguistic data, past and present, are available through various channels. These data can be combined, annotated, mined and visualized using high-powered computing. For several decades, English linguistics has been at the forefront of this revolution in the humanities, as evinced for instance in the development and use of digital corpora and in the quantitative turn in the field. While we recognize these past achievements, ISLE 6 seeks to assess the impact of digitalization in English linguistics and in the study of its varieties. We hope to be a venue for state-of-the-art presentations that highlight how digitalization can (or cannot) benefit the study of English linguistics and how it could help us understand its past and present and possibly predict its future paths.

LSPPC6 — 6th International Conference of Asia-Pacific LSP & Professional Communication Association
03 jui 2021 - 05 jui 2021 • Hong Kong, n’importe où (en ligne)
Organisateur:
Department of English, City University of Hong Kong
Résumé:
The study of Languages for Specific Purposes and Professional Communication has progressed rapidly over the past thirty years. Recent developments suggest emerging needs for English language learners that require more sensitive conceptual frameworks and methodologies. The pervasive use of digital media has led to the development of academic and professional practices that are multimodal, plurilingual and often seek to engage diversified audiences. At the same time, technology and new methods have become readily available to study LSP and Professional Communication in a widening range of settings from increasingly diverse angles, shedding light on complexity that understandably once lay beyond the standard analytical purview. The use of digital technologies along with theoretical and methodological developments in areas including multimodal discourse analysis, multimodal interaction, gesture studies, and embodied cognitive science have revolutionized our understanding of specialized language and communication. The 6th international conference of the Asia-Pacific LSP & Professional Communication Association aims to develop a high resolution picture of how our field is dealing with these scientific and technological advances.

LET 2021 — 5th International Language and Territory Colloquium
14 jui 2021 - 20 jui 2021 • Montpellier, France
Organisateur:
Université Paul-Valéry, Montpellier
Résumé:
Language and territory both conceptually refer to social structuring, space and a sense of belonging. A historical approach to these notions reveals innovation and new practices in the societies that shape them. They are also highly polysemic terms with differing semantic contours according to usage, context, aims. The representations they embody are sustained by underlying links and structures. Together, they evoke exchanges, movements, blending, but also withdrawal and conflict. They are an invitation to travel, to creativity, to self-expression or to encounters with the Other. This colloquium will discuss the different ways that languages and territories are linked, and will show the political, social and economic stakes that arise from the relationships between them. Above all, these terms refer to men and women with their social practices and representations, at the core of the logic of territoriality. New territories give rise to new language practices, which, in turn, create new spaces, discourse and meaning.

COSERIU100 — Coseriu's Linguistics - Origin and Actuality
16 jui 2021 - 19 jui 2021 • Zurich, Suisse
Résumé:
Eugenio Coseriu (1921-2002) was one of the most influential linguists of the 20th century. His language theory has had an important impact on contemporary Romance and General Linguistics. In several branches of linguistics (such as the theory of language change, pragmatics and text linguistics, variational linguistics or semantics), Coseriu’s proposals of the 1950s can be considered groundbreaking, however, even if several of his linguistic concepts have become part of the canon of linguistics, others have remained largely unknown at least outside the circle of Coseriu’s disciples. The centenary of his birth in 2021 will be the occasion for the celebration of an international conference jointly organized at two Universities: Zurich (Switzerland) and Tubingen (Germany).

Forms and representations in phonology: in honour of Bob Ladd
23 jui 2021 • Barcelona, Espagne
Résumé:
This workshop is dedicated to the work of Bob Ladd, one of the pioneers of Laboratory Phonology and the first president of the Association of Laboratory Phonology. The theme of the workshop reflects Bob's interest in the form and nature of phonological representations and their relation ''to the physical manifestations of speech and the cognitive processes that underlie them'' (in his words). His research on this broad theme has dealt with a number of topics; though perhaps the best known has been his contribution to intonational phonology and the relation between abstract phonological representations of tone and their phonetic manifestation, his research has also addressed the more general issue of the role of phonetic evidence in phonology, the problematic nature of systematic phonetics, the treatment of gradience, and duality of patterning. Contributions to this workshop, from researchers who have collaborated with Bob during his career and/or been strongly influenced by his research, will focus on these themes.

NAMED 2020: De/constructing motion events
01 jul 2021 - 03 jul 2021 • Paris, France
Résumé:
The expression of motion events is a multifaceted phenomenon that lies at the confluence of morphology, lexical semantics, syntax, discourse and pragmatics. Recent research has probed into its composite nature, revealing how it is underpinned by language-specific constellations of interacting factors (Beavers, Levin et al. 2010). The aim of this conference is to further explore these factors, with particular emphasis on the role of the verb and crosslinguistic comparison, while encouraging different approaches (Levin 1993, Aurnague 2011, Stosic 2019) to share their views on the matter.

LxGr2021 — Corpus Approaches to Lexicogrammar 2021
03 jul 2021 • Online, n’importe où (en ligne)
Résumé:
The focus of LxGr is the interaction of lexis and grammar. The focus is informed by Halliday’s view of lexis and grammar as “complementary perspectives” (1991: 32), and his conception of the two as notional ends of a continuum (lexicogrammar), in that “if you interrogate the system grammatically you will get grammar-like answers and if you interrogate it lexically you get lexis-like answers” (1992: 64).

eLex 2021: Electronic lexicography in the 21st century
05 jul 2021 - 07 jul 2021 • Brno, République tchèque
Résumé:
The topic of eLex 2021 is going to be “post-editing lexicography”. Digital lexicography has progressed over the past 30 years up to the point where large parts of entries in a new dictionary (such as headword lists, inflections, translations or example sentences) may be drafted automatically from a sufficiently large and sufficiently annotated text corpus. This technological progress leads to new methodological approaches where most editorial work consists of post-editing of automatically created content – similarly to post-editing of machine translated texts.

05 jul 2021 - 07 jul 2021 • Toulouse, France
Résumé:
The term crosslinguistic influence, introduced by Michael Sharwood-Smith (1983), was suggested as an alternative to transfer, given the behaviorist connotations of the latter. Subsequently, generativist and cognitivist approaches rejected contrastive analysis and the idea of the influence of the L1 on an L2, and research focussed henceforth more on difficulties intrinsic to the L2, as well as L2 learners’ internal cognitive processes.

ISB13 — 13th International Symposium on Bilingualism
09 jul 2021 - 14 jul 2021 • Warsaw – online, Pologne
Organisateur:
University of Warsaw (Poland)
Résumé:
The conference theme, “Bilingualism in Flux”, presents bilingualism as a dynamic and multifaceted phenomenon existing on a continuum. The in flux part of the theme is a twofold concept. First, it is understood as relating to non-linguistic circumstances that foster not only diverse, but also transient bilingual communities throughout the world. Nowadays, new waves of migration influence the linguistic status quo and enrich existing environments. Second, it pertains to the very processes taking place in language, a dynamic entity prone to changes. The fluctuating circumstances entail linguistic consequences reflected in the development of the second and further languages, cross-linguistic influence, language attrition, incomplete acquisition, and maintenance of heritage languages. Finally, the conference leitmotif highlights not only the local changes presently taking place in Poland, but also the country’s linguistic heritage.

DN27 — Language Ideologies and Political Discourse
12 jul 2021 - 14 jul 2021 • Milton Keynes (Virtual), Royaume-Uni
Résumé:
Ideologies regarding the social value of languages and discourses are contested, especially in times of political polarisation. Whether it be political rhetoric valorising certain languages over others in social media messages of populist leaders, activism promoting the revitalisation of minoritised languages or the hegemony of colonial languages in academic publishing, we can observe how language ideologies are constructed, and how they permeate every public domain. With this conference, we aim to explore the intersections between language ideology and political discourse, understanding both notions in their broadest terms, and to find tactical solutions to prevent a language ideological meltdown of political discourse; i.e. a politicisation of essential understandings of language as belonging to specific people and not to others. The conference thus aims to open up a critical space in which we can explore ideological discourses that make the indexical links between language and politics meaningful, aiming, ultimately, to reposition ourselves and our research within the very same political discourse that we investigate.

Résumé:
Traditionally, editions of the CILH pay tribute to renowned researchers in the field whose work contributes to the building and innovation in concepts and methods related to Historical Linguistics. The V CILH: Diachronic constellations continues this tradition and, in this edition, honors professors Charlotte Galves and Mary Kato, who were the founders and diffusers in the area of Historical Linguistics in Brazil. Galves and Kato worked on formal diachronic syntax: the first with strong interaction with the areas of corpus linguistics and on the interface between syntax and prosody; and the second in interface with sociolinguistics and studies on language acquisition. “Navigation” and “travel” are metaphors present in the work of the honorees, and in line with their legacy, the V CILH: Diachronic constellations aims to navigate in this legacy by offering a space for qualified debate on linguistic phenomena related to linguistic change and the variability of languages; at the same time, it seeks to value the memory of the work of these important researchers for the new generations of researchers from Brazil and beyond. To this end, the event will feature: conferences, short courses, homage sessions, workshop sessions covering different areas of linguistics and philology, as well as general sessions and poster sessions.

The Once and Future English
10 mar 2022 - 12 mar 2022 • Londres, Royaume-Uni
Organisateur:
University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, USA
Résumé:
This conference begins with the notion that English is today used by about 1.5 billion people, less than a third of whom speak it as their first language. This minority-majority reversal has significantly impacted the grammatical characteristics of English, the demographics of the Anglophone population, the domains in which English is used, and attitudes towards the language, which has been described both as a venue for increased global communication and as a cultural and economic predator. The history of the language is being rewritten as well, from one defined by conventional periodization and the triumph of English as a Germanic language, to one that has reoriented the historical and contemporary significance of the language’s traditional homelands. The Once and Future English asks the question: How will English’s present and past look to future speakers?
