These subjects lend themselves to the exploration of rural activism, social justice, innovation, politics, business development, cultural expression, self-governance, and collective experiences — both historical and contemporary — in local, regional, national, and global settings.

Workshop on the Applications of Quantum Formalism to Behavioural Economics
25 mai 2021 - 28 mai 2021 • The Fields Institute – online, Canada
Organisateur:
The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences
Résumé:
The application of quantum mechanics to the social sciences has led to useful insights, especially in the areas of experimental decision-making and behavioral economics. A few years ago, the Fields Institute hosted a workshop on this topic entitled ‘Quantum Probability and the Mathematical Modelling of Decision Making’. In this forthcoming workshop we ask ourselves a fundamental question: what is the key tenet, which rationalizes why quantum theory in social science and especially in social choice and decision-making can be used? This is a central question which has not been previously answered. The concept of ‘unicity’ essentially indicates that a single framework can describe all observed events. However, in decision-making there is no reason to believe there is only one framework, which can capture all events. It was recently discovered that the impossibility of finding a single framework to describe all observed events is the same as the paradox of social choice. Hence, the close connection between economics and quantum theory and this workshop will bring together experts from physics, social sciences and different backgrounds to address this close connection.

LET 2021 — 5th International Language and Territory Colloquium
14 jui 2021 - 20 jui 2021 • Montpellier, France
Organisateur:
Université Paul-Valéry, Montpellier
Résumé:
Language and territory both conceptually refer to social structuring, space and a sense of belonging. A historical approach to these notions reveals innovation and new practices in the societies that shape them. They are also highly polysemic terms with differing semantic contours according to usage, context, aims. The representations they embody are sustained by underlying links and structures. Together, they evoke exchanges, movements, blending, but also withdrawal and conflict. They are an invitation to travel, to creativity, to self-expression or to encounters with the Other. This colloquium will discuss the different ways that languages and territories are linked, and will show the political, social and economic stakes that arise from the relationships between them. Above all, these terms refer to men and women with their social practices and representations, at the core of the logic of territoriality. New territories give rise to new language practices, which, in turn, create new spaces, discourse and meaning.

Résumé:
The Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication at Rice University invites you to submit a proposal to 6th CLIC (Online) Conference “After COVID: Language, Diversity, and Social Justice.” The 6th CLIC Conference invites researchers and practitioners to reflect on experiences and consequences of the health crisis caused by a world-wide pandemic and its effects on issues of social justice and diversity in the teaching of second languages and multilingualism in general. Through the lens of language analysis, we seek to understand (a) the renewed interest in multilingualism and second language learning in an increasingly multimodal communication environment (e.g., new media and technology) and, in turn, (b) how this new perspective on language/multilingualism can have an effect on second language learning and teaching practices.

HRIS 2021 — Human Enhancement in the Individualized Society: Trends and Tendencies
20 sep 2021 - 24 sep 2021 • Lake Como, Italie
Organisateur:
Lake Como School of Advanced Studies
Résumé:
That we are individuals living in increasingly individualized societies is a well-established fact, as well as one may depict the contemporary subject as the human type who wants to be free in order to become an individual. No more some kind of a Comune at the foundation of our societies, but the Individuo and his freedom to act as a privato. No more “laws” for action, but “freedom” of action. No more the “political animal” but the “homo oeconomicus” as the subject of history, and, last but not least, no more “citizens” of the City (Polis), rather “consumers” in the global cities (cosmo-poleis), searching for self-improvement and self-realization but often coping with the delusions of authenticity and autonomy.
