Focussed Research Groups at BIRS — Mathematical Modelling and Machine Learning for Phonetics
19 avr 2020 - 26 avr 2020 • Banff, Alberta, Canada
Organisateur:
Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS)
Résumé:
Phonetics is the study of the sounds of the worlds languages and how they are used to communicate. A wealth of information is known by linguists about which sounds are used, how they are produced, how children learn these sounds, and how the use of sounds differs between different groups of speakers. Still, many fundamental questions remain unanswered relating to this important part of human language. The purpose of this Focussed Research Group is to bring together mathematicians and computer scientists who are interested in phonetics with linguists who are seeking ways to i) handle the massive amounts of data that are available in the human speech stream, and ii) develop mathematical models to clarify research questions and guide empirical study.

CAFFELattes — Cosmological analyses featuring Galactic foreground emission
11 mai 2020 - 15 mai 2020 • Montpellier, France
Résumé:
The magnetized Galactic interstellar medium has become a main hindrance in the analysis of cosmological data. Galactic foregrounds are an issue in different observational contexts for the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), the HI 21cm signal from the epoch of reionization (EoR), line intensity mapping and lensing surveys. Galactic magnetic fields also upset the identification of sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and the measurement of extragalactic magnetic fields. In each context, cosmology is tied to Galactic astrophysics, and from a methodological point of view, to mathematics, because novel methods are required to model and reproduce the statistical properties of Galactic foregrounds and account for their complexity in the statistical inference of cosmological parameters. The meeting aims at bringing together scientists from Cosmology, Galactic Astrophysics and Mathematics for cross-fertilization. These three themes will be developed in parallel along the week in the context of CMB, large scale structure, EoR, cosmic magnetism and cosmic-ray science and experiments.

2 Day Workshop at BIRS — Multiplex Brain Networks
29 mai 2020 - 31 mai 2020 • Banff, Alberta, Canada
Résumé:
Understanding the relationship between structure, dynamics, and function in the brain is a crucial step toward innovative solutions for brain-related diseases such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and Autism Spectrum Disorders, and hence, it is of immense importance for society. Complex network approaches have successfully provided new insights about the structure and function of the brain for two decades. With recent advances in data science for neuroscience, the increased complexity of the data such as neurosignals from multiple frequency bands, large-scale optical imaging of neuronal activity, and high-resolution Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, has led to the proposition that multilayer-network models are essential to model and understand brain dynamics. This workshop builds on early successes using this framework and brings together a diverse group of world-leading experts of various backgrounds to take the application of multiplex networks in neuroscience to the next level. Bridging the gap between complex network theory and neuroscience. We expect that this workshop and the transdisciplinary collaborations between the different fields and participants will stimulate significant advances in our understanding of the brain and indeed lead to new diagnostic methods and treatments of brain related diseases in the future.

Résumé:
Nowadays the production of digital contents, data and services has reached a speed never experienced before. Large amounts of content are already on the Web, waiting for being reused both for personal or professional purposes. These contents, including multimedia documents, application tools, and services are being accumulated on the Web, in cloud systems, and in local and global data structures. There is thus a need for new theories and technologies for advanced information search, integration through interoperation, and personalization of digital services. Additionally, in science and technology, with progressively sophisticated research going on, there is a growing need for interdisciplinary availability, distribution and exchange of the latest research results, in organic forms, including not only research papers and multimedia documents, but also various tools developed for measurement, analysis, inference, design, planning, simulation, interaction and production as well as the related large data sets. And similar needs are also rising for the interdisciplinary and international availability, distribution and exchange of ideas and works among artists, musicians, designers, architects, directors, and producers.

Résumé:
The machine learning summer school (MLSS) series was started in 2002 with the motivation to promulgate modern methods of statistical machine learning and inference. It was motivated by the observation that while many students are keen to learn about machine learning, and an increasing number of researchers want to apply machine learning methods to their research problems, only few machine learning courses are taught at universities. Machine learning summer schools present topics which are at the core of modern Machine Learning, from fundamentals to state-of-the-art practice. The speakers are leading experts in their field who talk with enthusiasm about their subjects.

Résumé:
The field of natural language semantics has undergone what some refer to as an ‘experimental turn’ and is arguably currently undergoing a ‘computational turn’. By expanding the toolbox available to the semanticist, these two turns have the effect of expanding the phenomena that can be explained and the varieties of semantic explanation that can be offered. For example, experimental methods can help distinguish between alternative explanations of semantic effects, e.g. whether to classify controversial phenomena as implicatures or presuppositions. Similarly, computational models of semantics can generate fine-grained and non-categorical predictions that can fruitfully be tested experimentally. And both kinds of methods can be used to ask questions about the emergence of semantic structures in language, including which factors influence their distribution and typology. Given this wider toolbox and purview, we aim to gather a workshop to showcase exciting new work that develops new semantic explanations using experimental and computational methods, as well as to invite broader reflection on the methodology of semantics now and in its future. Topics of potential interest include but are not limited to: * Experimental semantics and pragmatics * Graded/non-categorical semantic theories and explanations * Information-theoretic measures and explanations in semantics and pragmatics * Semantic universals * Learnability and evolution of semantics and pragmatics * Bayesian approaches to semantics and pragmatics * Probing neural models for learned semantic representations * Semantics in emergent communication protocols * The methodology of semantics We invite anonymized submission of abstracts of 2 pages (12 pt font; 1in or 2.5cm margins) — with an extra page for references of figures — on new research on topics related to those listed above by February 15.

Sujets:
Experimental semantics and pragmatics * Graded/non-categorical semantic theories and explanations * Information-theoretic measures and explanations in semantics and pragmatics * Semantic universals * Learnability and evolution of semantics and pragmatics * Bayesian approaches to semantics and pragmatics * Probing neural models for learned semantic representations * Semantics in emergent communication protocols * The methodology of semantics

Searches and Machine Learning Meet the Precision Frontier
12 avr 2021 - 15 avr 2021 • UC Santa Barbara, États-Unis
Organisateur:
Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP)
Résumé:
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s facility for probing fundamental physics at the electroweak scale and well beyond. As it enters a new phase of extended data accumulation, two broad challenges emerge: how to fulfill the potential for percent-level precision with the large dataset, and how to maximise the information that can be extracted from each event about the underlying scattering process, in particular with machine learning. Solving these problems will have an impact across a wide range of physics topics: establishing the properties of the newly discovered interactions of the Higgs sector and understanding electroweak symmetry breaking, enhancing the sensitivity of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), and precision measurements of a range of fundamental parameters in the Standard Model.
