Curvilinear Condensed Matter: Fundamentals and Applications
06 avr 2020 - 08 avr 2020 • Bad Honnef, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation seminar
Résumé:
Extending two-dimensional structures into the three-dimensional (3D) space has become a general trend in multiple disciplines, including electronics, photonics, plasmonics and magnetics. This approach provides means to modify conventional or to launch novel functionalities by tailoring curvature and 3D shape. In the case of 3D curved magnetic thin films and nanowires the physics is driven by the interplay between exchange and magnetostatic interactions, which contain spatial derivatives in their energy functionals. This makes both interactions sensitive to the appearance of bends and twists in the physical space. Theoretical works predict the curvature-induced effective anisotropy and effective Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction resulting in a multitude of novel effects including magnetochiral effects (chirality symmetry breaking) and topologically induced magnetization patterning. Those 3D magnetic architectures are already proven to be application relevant for life sciences, targeted delivery, realization of 3D spin-wave filters, and magneto-encephalography devices to name just a few.

Workshop — Magnetic Small Angle Neutron Scattering – from Nanoscale Magnetism to Long‐Range Magnetic Structures
07 jui 2020 - 11 jui 2020 • Bad Honnef, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation seminar
Résumé:
This WE-Heraeus-Seminar focuses on the technique of magnetic small angle neutron scattering, which is one of the most important methods for magnetic microstructure determination in condensed-matter physics and materials science. Magnetic SANS provides access to bulk properties and yields, quite uniquely, information on the mesoscopic length scale (roughly 1-1000 nm). This is an important size regime where many macroscopic materials properties are realized. Currently, the magnetic SANS community can be roughly subdivided into two larger groups: the research of one group is anchored in the domain of condensed-matter physics with a focus on fundamental questions such as skyrmion crystals and topological spin structures, complex long-range-ordered spin structures, and vortex lattices in superconductors, while the second group of scientists employs the magnetic SANS method for scrutinizing nanoscale magnetism in terms of a micromagnetic continuum description; materials classes which are studied are e.g. permanent magnets, magnetic steels, nanoparticles and ferrofluids, or complex alloys. It is one of the central aims of this Heraeus seminar to bring both groups of researchers closer together by providing a stage for intra- and interdisciplinary scientific exchange. Besides, in view of the upcoming European Spallation Source, a further focus will be on future challenges related to neutron instrumentation, sample environment, and neutron data analysis.

Workshop — Topological properties of gauge theories and their applications to high-energy and condensed-matter physics
24 aou 2020 - 16 oct 2020 • Firenze , Italie
Organisateur:
The Galileo Galilei Institute for Theoretical Physics
Résumé:
Many remarkable properties of gauge theories rely on the topology of field configurations and/or ambient spacetime and are connected with quantum anomalies and nonperturbative excitations. These properties, often exact, have many implications in the physics of fundamental interactions, condensed matter systems and statistical mechanics models. They also account for a large part of the investigations in string theory, and combined with supersymmetry have led to exact solutions of low-energy theories and the discovery of duality relations between supersymmetric gauge theories. Meanwhile, a renewed interest in topological aspects has emerged from condensed matter physics, through the study of topological phases of quantum matter. The effective field theories for these systems are not of the usual Landau-Ginzburg-Higgs type, rather, they are described by topological gauge theories. The goal of this GGI activity is to bring together theoreticians of different backgrounds, in condensed matter, high energy and mathematical physics, with the belief that interdisciplinary approaches can lead to substantial progress in many directions.
Sujets:
Anomalies of quantum field theories * Generalized symmetries * Topological aspects of quantum states in condensed matter * (Supersymmetric) dualities in (2+1)-dimensions * Time-reversal symmetry and 4d theta-terms

5 Day Workshop at BIRS — Biological Active Porous Materials: Modeling, Simulation and Experimentation
04 oct 2020 - 09 oct 2020 • Banff, Alberta, Canada
Résumé:
One of the key technologies emerging in the 21st century is that of advanced materials, which offer the opportunity to change our lives in many ways, from improving energy efficiency through enabling new biomedical treatments and devices. In order to harness these materials, though, significant progress is needed in developing our understanding of how they work and interact, across scales ranging from those of atoms and molecules through the full size of devices constructed from them. Across the fields of experimentalists, materials scientists, and computational scientists focusing on active biological tissue, significant research is now underway in understanding the properties of both natural and engineered materials across these scales. This workshop brings together experts with distinct views on these materials and devices, aiming to seed the cross-disciplinary research needed to realize their potential to gain new knowledge on active biological materials and to best exploit it. We will bring together a diverse group of world-leading researchers focusing on discussions on the advances currently being made and the collaborations needed to fully unlock the transformative power of advanced materials by using biological active materials as role models.

Recent Advances in the Physics of Elastic Films
24 mai 2021 - 27 mai 2021 • UC Santa Barbara, États-Unis
Organisateur:
Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP)
Résumé:
Thin elastic films can be found everywhere: they occur naturally (lipid membranes, viral capsids, plant leaves, epithelial tissues, seashells, etc.) and as man-made materials (paper, graphene, fabrics, concrete shells, etc.). Since their resistance to bending must obey purely geometric surface constraints, stress and geometry are intricately coupled, often leading to unexpected and very nonlinear responses to perturbations. Recent progress in theoretical and experimental approaches, as well as novel technological applications, have advanced the frontier of this field, but also brought challenging new problems into focus, to which this conference is dedicated. Examples of interest include extreme mechanics, the cross-talk between stress and geometry, fluctuations in and out of equilibrium, frustrated internal stresses, and wetting of deformable sheets. We strive for a highly multidisciplinary meeting, in which experimentalists, theorists, and numerical simulators explore open questions in both biological and man-made model systems, examine the promise of novel theoretical and numerical techniques, identify the current frontier of understanding, and speculate on what type of new ideas or tools might be needed to push it further.

Entangled Quantum States of Matter: Classification, Creation, Manipulation, Detection
21 jui 2021 - 24 jui 2021 • UC Santa Barbara, États-Unis
Organisateur:
Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP)
Résumé:
This conference will explore many aspects of entangled quantum states of matter, with an eye towards their eventual experimental realization. These include non-Fermi liquids, symmetry-protected topological states, and topologically-ordered quantum matter such as gapped and gapless quantum spin liquids. Some of these states harbor nontrivial boundary or edge modes which will also be highlighted. Different topics will be covered including: the classification of entangled topological states which provide a roadmap of what is possible; investigations on how to engineer models built with realistic ingredients guided by theoretical explorations of their phase diagrams; and proposals for the right observables to detect and manipulate these states which can bring them closer from an abstract idea to reality. This conference will bring together experts on many aspects of highly-entangled quantum matter and help connect experts on mathematical aspects of classification and those with numerical expertise that provide information on phase diagrams with experimentalists striving to engineer these states in the lab.
