Recent Advances in the Physics of Elastic Films
24 mai 2021 - 27 mai 2021 • UC Santa Barbara, États-Unis
Organisateur:
Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP)
Résumé:
Thin elastic films can be found everywhere: they occur naturally (lipid membranes, viral capsids, plant leaves, epithelial tissues, seashells, etc.) and as man-made materials (paper, graphene, fabrics, concrete shells, etc.). Since their resistance to bending must obey purely geometric surface constraints, stress and geometry are intricately coupled, often leading to unexpected and very nonlinear responses to perturbations. Recent progress in theoretical and experimental approaches, as well as novel technological applications, have advanced the frontier of this field, but also brought challenging new problems into focus, to which this conference is dedicated. Examples of interest include extreme mechanics, the cross-talk between stress and geometry, fluctuations in and out of equilibrium, frustrated internal stresses, and wetting of deformable sheets. We strive for a highly multidisciplinary meeting, in which experimentalists, theorists, and numerical simulators explore open questions in both biological and man-made model systems, examine the promise of novel theoretical and numerical techniques, identify the current frontier of understanding, and speculate on what type of new ideas or tools might be needed to push it further.

Designed assembly of colloids at interfaces - fundamentals to applications
14 jui 2021 - 16 jui 2021 • University of Hull, Hull, Royaume-Uni
Organisateur:
IOP Liquids and Complex Fluids Group
Résumé:
Colloidal particles at liquid interfaces represents a rapidly expanding area of soft matter science. The dramatic growth in interest in these systems has until now been primarily driven by the discovery of multi-phase systems such as emulsions and foams stabilised solely by particle adsorption. However, more recently, there has been a growing realisation that the unique behaviour of colloids at interfaces also provides new exciting opportunities to design the assembly of colloids into dimensionally confined structures in order to create functional nanomaterials, reconfigurable devices and biomimetic systems. The aim of this conference is to bring together the diverse research communities interested in this area, from fundamental soft matter science to applied research in areas such as novel formulations, lab on a chip reactors, nanomaterials for energy, biomaterials, encapsulation and controlled release etc., in order to cross-pollinate ideas and stimulate new research directions in these fascinating systems.

25th IUCr congress satellite — IUCr2021 Computing School
09 aou 2021 - 14 aou 2021 • Nové Hrady, République tchèque
Résumé:
The Computing School will cover aspects that are relevant to all fields of crystallographic computing. As the main topic we will focus on the determination and the use of eigenvectors and eigenvalues and their applications in the different fields of crystallography. Applications range from the well known principal component analysis and other statistical and machine learning techniques to modelling using Markov processes, or optimization of functions. Fields such as image processing, information theory, and crystallography make use of these in many of its most fundamental methods. It impacts directly macromolecular crystallography in both phasing and refinement aspects. In small molecule crystallography and materials science research, it allows the understanding of very fundamental physical properties of matter. In this school, our aim is to learn and teach about this general topic from the computing aspect of the fundamentals, but also the computing tools and the data.

07 sep 2021 - 10 sep 2021 • Krakow , Pologne
Organisateur:
The Jagiellonian University
Résumé:
Dear all potential participants of DIFFUSION FUNDAMENTALS IX HELD IN KRAKOW - We all follow with great concern the worldwide development of the Corona pandemics. It now seems that nobody knows how long the way to (a new?) normality will exactly be. In some regions of our world, severe restrictions reach already into the next year. Therefore, in order to ensure the best possible conditions for the upcoming “Diffusion Fundamentals” – as far as any reliable predictions can be made – with a heavy heart we have decided to postpone the conference by one year, namely to September 21 – 24, 2022

We do intend and will do our best to retain the actuality of the conference programme planned for September 2021 and are in contact with the speakers who have accepted the invitations to attend the event next year (go to the bookmark “Invited Speakers”). You are cordially invited and encouraged to visit the present website from time to time as it will be systematically updated with current news.

European Materials Research Society (E-MRS)
Résumé:
The Conference will be held at the Central Campus of the Warsaw University of Technology, from 20th to 23rd September 2021. It is the 17th E-MRS Fall Meeting following its launch in 2002 to run in parallel to the Spring Meeting. Warsaw University of Technology Institute of Physics PAN Frontier Research in Chemistry preview all symposia 2021 Fall Meeting The European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) was established in 1983 through the initiative of individual European Materials scientists. A number of European materials scientists who attended the MRS meetings in the U.S.A. realised that such a society could be of benefit to Europe to enhance the links between materials science and industry and to provide a voice for the materials community. Most of the problems facing the world such as energy supply and health will be solved only by breakthroughs in materials science. It is vital that the outcomes of research are utilised through technological experience and innovationfor the benefit of mankind.

Autumn School on Correlated Electrons: Simulating Correlations with Computers
20 sep 2021 - 24 sep 2021 • Jülich, Allemagne
Résumé:
The combinatorial growth of the Hilbert space makes the many-electron problem a grand challenge. Progress relies on the development of non-perturbative methods, based on either wavefunctions or self energies. This made, in recent years, calculations for strongly-correlated materials a reality. These simulations draw their power from three sources: theoretical advances, algorithmic developments and the raw power of massively parallel supercomputers. Turning to quantum hardware could give quantum materials science the ultimate boost. Before quantum parallelism can be exploited, however, many questions, algorithmic and engineering, need to be addressed. The school will provide students with an overview of the state-of-the-art of many-body simulations and the promises of quantum computers. After introducing the basic modeling techniques and the concept of entanglement in correlated states, lectures will turn to methods that do not rely on wavefunctions, comparing density functional theory, the GW method and dynamical mean-field theory. Advanced lectures will broaden the discussion, addressing topics from the Luttinger-Ward functional to non-equilibrium Green functions. As a glimpse of future possibilities, the basics of quantum computing and its possible uses in materials simulations will be explained. The goal of the school is to introduce advanced graduate students and up to the full range of modern approaches for the realistic simulations of strongly correlated materials with computers.
