Résumé:
Recent Appointees in Materials Science (RAMS) is the only UK national conference specifically aimed at recent appointees (lecturers, research fellows, postdocs and industrial researchers) in Materials Science. RAMS 2018 will incorporate symposia covering a broad range of subjects in Materials Science (from inorganic materials and functional nanomaterials, to biological, soft matter and electronic materials), to help recent appointees in academia and industry to build their national collaborative networks, exchange experiences and benefit from peer support. The conference will also incorporate plenary lectures from leading UK materials scientists as well as sessions on essential training and development and information on funding opportunities through the RAMS network, targeted to help materials scientists at the start of their careers. Our aim is to support those at the beginning of their career by providing a forum for networking. Balancing teaching and administration with trying to establish a research group can be a daunting task; RAMS seeks to provide a medium where new appointees can share their experiences and learn from their peers. So if you are a new research fellow, lecturer or a postdoc looking to have a career in any area of materials science, you may benefit from being part of the RAMS community.

Autumn School on Correlated Electrons: DMFT -- From Infinite Dimensions to Real Materials
17 sep 2018 - 21 sep 2018 • Jülich, Allemagne
Résumé:
Since the beginning of quantum mechanics, emergent many-body phenomena represent the grand-challenge in theoretical condensed-matter physics. Indeed, static mean-field approaches fail to capture even the simplest many-body effects, while diagrammatic techniques generally fail in the regime characteristic of strong correlations. The introduction of dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) has revolutionized this field. Two insights paved the way to this paradigm shift. The first is that in the limit of infinite dimensions all contributions to the self-energy become local. The second is that the locality of the self-energy makes it possible to build a new type of mean-field theory, dynamical in nature, by mapping a correlated lattice problem onto a self-consistent quantum-impurity model. In the last decades, thanks to advances in model building combined with the development of flexible and numerically exact quantum-impurity solvers, DMFT was successfully linked with ab-initio density-functional techniques, making it the method of choice for the investigation of correlated electron materials.

Faraday Discussion — Ultrafast Photoinduced Energy and Charge Transfer Faraday Discussion
08 avr 2019 - 10 avr 2019 • Ventura, California, États-Unis
Résumé:
Ultrafast energy and charge transfer events dictate the functionality of a broad range of molecular, aggregate and nanomaterial systems. Impressive recent advances in the commercialisation of ultrafast laser technology and on many theoretical fronts, plus the societal emphasis on solar energy. have led to a surge of research in this community, encompassing spectroscopists, biophysicists, computational and theoretical chemists, physicists and materials scientists. Ambitions have evolved beyond studies of simple molecular systems, and increasingly focus on the underlying molecular mechanisms prevailing in nanomaterial, native protein and hybrid systems. Many working in this area share a common aim, to address and answer one of the most pressing issues currently facing the scientific community: the photophysics underlying efficient light capture, energy transport and efficient charge carrier generation, water splitting, photoprotection and photodamage, proton transfer and/or molecular re-organisation.

Effective Theories of Quantum Phases of Matter
06 mai 2019 - 31 mai 2019 • Stockholm, Suède
Résumé:
Physical systems look different when observed at different resolutions: what appears as a continuum liquid to the naked eye becomes a cluster of jiggling atoms when observed at the resolution of an electron microscope. Effective field theory provides a description of physics in terms of degrees of freedom appropriate to a given resolution. Over the last couple of decades, physicists have developed effective field theory tools which, to a large extent, unify fields as diverse as atomic and condensed-matter physics, particle and nuclear physics, and cosmology. The ensuing interaction between different branches of physics has never been as fruitful as it is now. Numerous physical phenomena, first predicted and studied in high-energy physics, have found their realization in novel materials. On the other hand, the richness of condensed-matter physics provides a lasting source of inspiration for new developments in high-energy physics and cosmology. Extremely useful in general, the effective field theory tools become indispensable for quantum phases of matter whose low-energy physics is driven by collective excitations, either due to the presence of spontaneous symmetry breaking or due to strong microscopic interactions. The aim of this program is to give a new impulse to a further development of this exciting interdisciplinary field. We bring together leading practitioners working on effective theories of quantum phases of matter across several branches of physics. Our goal is to map out important open problems with broad relevance and look for new directions towards their solution, to reinvigorate existing collaborations and foster new connections.

Faraday Discussion — Understanding and Reconstructing Biointerfaces with 3D Soft Nanolithography
03 jul 2019 - 05 jul 2019 • Londres, Royaume-Uni
Résumé:
Capturing the interfacial dynamics that drive the mechanical and biological properties of natural carbohydrate-based nanomaterials will require synergistic advances in 3D nanolithography, surface characterization, and organic and macromolecular chemistry at interfaces. The challenge, and the reason why this topic merits a Faraday Discussion, is that many of the researchers working in this area come from disparate fields that rarely if ever communicate, including physical chemistry, surface chemistry, mechanical engineering, biology, and material science.

Topological Quantum Matter: From Low-Temperature Physics to Non-Equilibrium Dynamics
23 aou 2019 • Stockholm, Suède
Résumé:
Recent advances in the band theory of crystalline materials have singled out topology as a key ingredient in the modern classification of matter, with major impact on measurable electronic properties. Topological band theory has also grown into an emerging paradigm in many areas of physics, and is now used to characterize metamaterials, including photonic, atomic, acoustic, and elastic systems, in both the quantum and classical regimes. As our understanding of topology in physics widens, the incorporation of out-of-equilibrium phenomena is gaining in importance.
