Since their discovery at the end of the nineteenth century, liquid crystals have helped illuminate the many ways in which light interacts with matter. The capability of nematic liquid crystal molecules to align along preferred directions by the application of electric and magnetic fields has had a profound impact on the way that information is presented through the flat panel display industry. In addition to small molecule nematic structures, there is a wealth of liquid crystal phases that can offer several degrees of positional ordering. These include the one-dimensionally modulated smectic phases, the two-dimensional chromonic crystal structures, and the three-dimensional periodic blue phases, which are determined by arrays of defects in cholesteric materials. This workshop will focus on a number of novel optical applications of liquid crystals. This workshop will gather mathematicians and scientists from many fields of liquid crystal research to explore the current trends of liquid crystals.

Electrohydrodynamics and Electrodiffusion in Material Sciences and Biology

Electrohydrodynamics and electrodiffusion, in particular the study of droplets and deformable membranes in fluid under the effect of electric field or the flow of ions in salt exchange membranes and fuel cells, are classical fields in the material sciences. The potential applications of electrohydrodynamics to microfluidics and biomedical engineering has given a renewed interest to this classical field. On the other hand, description and modeling of corresponding phenomena in biology is relatively sparse, but its presence and significance is starting to be recognized. This workshop will bring together experts of electrohydrodynamics and electrodiffusion in both the material sciences and biology to foster discussion. The talks will address various aspects of electrohydrodynamics and electrodiffusion, including phenomenology, modeling, and computation.

Topical Research Meeting: Topological States in Strongly Interacting Light-Matter Systems

Résumé:
In recent years separate research communities of condensed matter physics, working on solid-state systems with a strong element of light-matter interaction, have made progress towards realising topological states. Semiconductor microcavities are semiconductor hetero-structures in which optical modes coherently mix with quantum well excitons forming polaritons. These interacting bosonic particles have been shown to undergo condensation, superfluidity, and rich hydrodynamics. Superconducting circuits are highly coherent cryogenic Josephson junction based quantum circuits, which support both spin and bosonic excitations. In both systems there is a demonstrated capability to create one and two dimensional lattices and therefore there is a promise for realising quantum simulation of interacting bosons and spins. The aim of this meeting is to combine these two approaches in creating theoretical proposals and experimental realisations of a workable high-coherence devices for quantum simulation of topological states and their future utilisation in quantum technology.

The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will jointly organize this School and Workshop on Fundamental Methods for Atomic, Molecular and Materials Properties in Plasma Environments. The one-week event at ICTP in Trieste, from 16 to 20 April 2018, will provide training and information exchange for computational scientists working on models and data for atomic, molecular and materials processes relevant to fusion energy research, industrial plasmas, laser-produced plasmas, astrophysical plasmas, and warm and hot dense matter. The training is aimed at advanced Ph.D. students, postdocs and other young researchers. The information exchange will span several disciplines: from molecules to materials and from method developments to data treatments. Topics related to energetic events and electronically excited states are emphasized throughout the programme. The schedule features lectures by international experts, invited and contributed research talks, posters and discussion sessions, with ample time available for interaction and discussions.

Crackling Noise in Materials

Numerous systems including deformation and fracture of materials, dynamics of domain walls in ferromagnets, and earthquakes respond to slow and smooth external driving by exhibiting intermittent and bursty dynamics, or 'crackling noise', consisting of a sequence of events with a broad size distribution. A major challenge we aim to address within this program is that in many cases, the relevant empirical and experimental phenomena remain unexplained by theory. To this end, we plan to bring together experts of various fields where crackling noise is observed, including contributions from theory, numerical simulations and experiment, to present an overview of the current developments, and to discuss open problems of the field.

Topological Matter Beyond the Ten-Fold Way

Résumé:
Since the discovery of topological insulators about a decade ago, the field has been focused on non-interacting gapped fermionic states, classified within the so-called 'ten-fold way periodic table'. However, new topological states of matter not captured within this classification have recently been theoretically proposed and experimentally discovered. These include topological crystalline insulators, Weyl semimetals, but also classical topological states in mechanical metamaterials. Given these developments it is clear that the study of topological matter is entering a new period where the themes going 'beyond the ten-fold way' take the center stage. In this program, we bring together experimentalists and theorists to review the current status of this burgeoning field, identify the crucial areas where progress can be made, and foster collaborations and partnerships to vigorously pursue these goals.

Most of the high-pressure matter in the universe—planetary interiors—resides at intermediate temperatures between the cold-curve and the Hugoniot. We will explore recent results bridging traditional isothermal and Hugoniot studies. Across our disciplines "high pressure" can legitimately describe pressures from 10 MPa to 10 TPa. We will focus on pressures of importance to biology and chemistry, associating studies where compression is used to effectively explore and control material response.

In the spirit of a community meeting, Q-mat will seek participation of a large fraction of active researchers in this area. We plan to have 6 overview talks (1 hr duration) encompassing broad areas of quantum condensed matter and about 50 invited talks (30 min each) in two parallel sessions spread over 3 days. A fraction of the talks would be reserved for junior researchers, i.e. post-docs and senior graduate students, which will be chosen from submitted abstracts. There will also be poster sessions for community members/junior students. In addition, we will have corporate sessions for talks given by equipment manufacturers/suppliers.

Bounding Transport and Chaos in Condensed Matter and Holography

The program explores recent developments in describing the dynamics of strongly-coupled field theories using the notion of fundamental, quantum bounds on transport, and their interplay with quantum chaos. By bringing together international leaders in condensed matter and high-energy physics, we aim at enhancing our current understanding by combining experimental results and the various theoretical, non-perturbative approaches to these problems. Participants will include experts in thermoelectric transport experiments, hydrodynamics, gauge/gravity duality, condensed matter and conformal field theory.
