Data-Driven Materials Informatics — Statistical Methods and Mathematical Analysis
04 mai 2024 - 24 mai 2024 • Chicago, IL, États-Unis
Organisateur:
Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation
Résumé:
Materials informatics is an emerging field defined by the use of simulation tools combined with methods from data sciences and machine learning to better understand materials properties and design innovative materials. The models which are considered cover an extremely wide range, from Schrödinger’s equation, which describes matter at the (sub)atomistic scale, to the equations of continuum mechanics. Mathematical sciences play a key role in materials informatics, both to construct the databases used to train machine learning algorithms (since these databases are made of reference simulation results), and to harness them in order to extract the most relevant information. The aim of this program is bring together a diverse scientific audience, both between scientific fields (physical sciences, materials sciences, biophysics, etc) and within mathematics (mathematical modeling, numerical analysis, statistics and data analysis, etc), to make progress on key questions of materials informatics.

809. WE-Heraeus-Seminar — Functional Materials at Surfaces - Fabrication, Atomic-scale Characterization, and Advances Towards Application
05 mai 2024 - 10 mai 2024 • Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation
Résumé:
The topic of functional materials at surfaces covers a wide range of material classes and length scales, from single surface-adsorbed organic molecules to extended 2D structures, and thus research areas. What these areas all have in common is the goal to understand the physics that ultimately defines the properties of these materials, and eventually to learn how to modify these properties in a controlled and reproducible manner to devise materials optimized for applications. One enormously powerful toolbox to achieve this is scanning probe microscopy (SPM). Over the past 40 years since its invention, SPM has evolved from a mere imaging technique to a tool that can provide information on structural, electronic, optical, and magnetic properties, and even facilitate the manipulation of individual adsorbates, all at the atomic level. These advances over the past decades have sparked tremendous progress not only in our understanding of the physics of such low-dimensional systems, but also in our ability to build structures with specifically tailored functionality. While the main focus of this seminar will be scanning probe based approaches, we want to also bridge the gap to alternative and complementary high-resolution characterization techniques.

Towards Routine Orbital-free Large-Scale Quantum-Mechanical Modelling of Materials
08 sep 2024 - 13 sep 2024 • Hangzhou, Chine
Organisateur:
Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (IASM)
Résumé:
This symposium brings together mathematicians, computer scientists, chemists and physicist to address a truly multidisciplinary issue of enabling large-scale atomistically-resolved, ab initio materials modeling. Such modeling capabilities are required for understanding and rational design of materials ranging from alloys to solid electrolytes for fuel cells. There is a substantial gap in theory and computing techniques which on one hand would be able to model phenomena intrinsically requiring models with millions of atoms and on the other hand provide accuracy and insight which is today routinely achievable only for unrealistically small model systems . This is a gap between a model and a reality. To bridge it, this symposium makes brains from different research fields pull in one direction. Progress that this symposium will help accelerate will mean better computational support for the development of functional materials, with more of the development moved from time-, manpower-, and $-costly lab experimentation to in-silico design.

correl24 — Autumn School on Correlated Electrons: Correlations and Phase Transitions
16 sep 2024 - 20 sep 2024 • Jülich, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Forschungszentrum Jülich
Résumé:
Emergent phenomena are the essence of condensed-matter physics and at the same time what makes the behavior of correlated materials appealing for applications. They are, however, hard to understand at a fundamental level. It is the interplay of several competing interactions — none of which can be treated as a mere perturbation, leading to the emergence of effective interactions — that makes their description a grand challenge. Addressing this problem requires mastery of a wide spectrum of theoretical concepts, ranging from materials modeling using first-principles approaches to advanced many-body methods based on dynamical mean-fields, stochastic simulations and renormalization techniques. The concepts of symmetry, topological invariance and the classification of transitions between phases are of crucial importance to bring order to the plethora of observed phenomena.

The goal of this year’s school is to provide students with an overview of the state-of-the-art in the field of emergent phases in strongly correlated systems and the many techniques used to investigate them. The program will start with fundamental models and concepts, introducing the Hubbard and Anderson Hamiltonians and their physics, and providing an overview of field-theoretical aspects of condensed-matter physics. More advanced lectures will introduce symmetries, Berry phases and topological quantum matter. The focus will then turn to emergent phenomena: superconductivity, conventional and non-conventional, Kondo and heavy-fermion behavior, Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions, Mott phases, orbital-ordering, and quantum phase transitions. The topics will be treated both from the view point of simple models and that of real materials, with an outlook on materials design from the theoretical and experimental viewpoint. The theoretical approaches covered will go from density-functional-theory-based methods to dynamical mean-field theory and quantum Monte Carlo. Experimental lectures will cover phenomena under normal and extreme conditions.

The Many Faces of Active Mechanics
15 oct 2024 - 18 oct 2024 • Santa Barbara, États-Unis
Organisateur:
UC Santa Barbara, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics
Résumé:
Active matter explores collective phenomena that emerge from energy-consuming components interacting with each other and their environment. Great strides have been made in understanding the surprising behavior of active fluids, from spontaneous flow to flocking to condensation with no attractive interactions, demonstrating the relevance of the active matter paradigm to systems as diverse as collections of living organisms, cell assemblies, the cell interior, and synthetically engineered materials. A recent new direction for the field has been the study and engineering of active solids - elastically coupled networks where active energy input allows for actuation and shape changes not possible in equilibrium. This conference will bring together scientists working across active matter and related disciplines, including hydrodynamic and elastic theories of active matter, living matter, classical and quantum materials far from equilibrium, and animate matter, to study the behavior of a broad range of active solids, from active hydrogels to metamaterials to mechanical structures composed of linked robotic components. It will aim to connect these distinct branches, find overarching principles that span these fields, and identify areas for future breakthroughs.

Résumé:
Over the past ten years tremendous progress has been achieved in quantum field theory thanks to the realization that symmetries can be interpreted in terms of the action of topological defects on the space of operators. This gives a generalization of the notion of symmetries, explicitly realized in many instances exploiting Lagrangian field theory techniques, uncovering a rich and unexpected landscape of physical effects in condensed matter, high energy physics, and quantum gravity. This conference will bring together the major experts in the subject, and strives to be an opportunity for participants to quickly get up to speed with the most recent advances and open problems in the field.
