QMB18 — Quantum Many-Body Systems Far from Equilibrium: Quench Dynamics, Thermalisation, and Many-Body Localisation

Résumé:
Recent progress in manipulating cold atoms and ions has brought the study of non-equilibrium behaviour of isolated quantum systems into the focus of research. This has given rise to the development of novel theoretical concepts and numerical tools, but also led to a renewed interest in foundational questions. Important recent developments, like quench protocols, thermalisation in isolated quantum systems, as well as absence of thermalisation due to many-body localisation, will be in the focus of this workshop. We aim to bring together researchers from a variety of fields related to this topic, including quantum information, statistical physics, mathematical physics, cold atoms and condensed matter physics. The workshop schedule consists of several 45min talks per day, but leaves ample time for discussions.

BDC2018 — Beyond Digital Computing: The Power of Quantum and Neural Networks

The full simulation of complex systems, both in the classical and quantum regime, is far beyond the capabilities of current computing schemes. Recent proposals aim to push the boundaries of computability with hybrid strategies based on machine learning, network theory, neuromorphic hardware, and quantum simulation. Our international symposium aims to bring together experts from different fields to explore how to harness the full potential of these emerging architectures. The symposium will be held at the International Academic Forum Heidelberg (www.iwh.uni-hd.de). Transport problems are ubiquitous in quantum physics, from applied condensed matter physics to conceptual questions on the time evolution of closed systems. Recently, a large number of experiments have been conducted using cold atoms in order to tackle these problems experimentally, with a wide range motivations and experimental and theoretical techniques. This conference aims at bringing together experimentalists and theoreticians of the cold atoms community and beyond around this topic, to confront the approaches and discuss the perspectives.

The growing ability to manipulate quantum systems is paving the way for a second quantum revolution and a number of initiatives worldwide have been formed to foster quantum technologies. Résumé:
The main goal of the conference is to contribute to a better understanding of the behavior of quantum systems out of equilibrium. To reach this aim we also need to improve our knowledge of systems in equilibrium and steady state situations. The conference will thus address foundations of quantum physics, quantum many body physics, statistical physics, and thermodynamics relying on the theoretical and experimental methods of condensed matter physics and quantum optics. The systems considered will be mainly on the order of mesoscopic (nanoscale) size, and include those of both natural and artificial origin. Special attention will be given to non-equilibrium quantum systems, physics of quantum information and manifestation of quantum effects in biological systems. Subjects from astrophysics, gravitation or cosmology related to the above scope will also be included.
