PQC 2019 — Second PQC Standardization Conference

Résumé:
The NIST Post-Quantum Cryptography Standardization Process has entered the next phase, in which 26 second-round candidates are being considered for standardization. NIST plans to hold a second NIST PQC Standardization Conference in August 2019 to discuss various aspects of these candidates, and to obtain valuable feedback for the selection of the finalists soon after the conference. NIST will invite each submission team of the 26 second-round candidates to give a short update on their algorithm.

Machine Learning for Quantum Matter

Résumé:
Machine learning has entered the field of quantum matter with applications covering quantum materials and the many-body problem. For example, interpretable and computationally-efficient machine learning models are able to capture the structure-property relationship in materials science. In case of the many-body problem, machine learning architectures provide versatile wavefunctions that lead to accurate results and prove to be more flexible than traditional methods. Conversely, methods in physics have also influenced the development of machine learning methods in the case of tensor networks. The workshop will feature talks by leading experts combined with the talks of younger participants to present a broad picture of the activities and best ideas on the use of ML methods in quantum matter.

ESRC — QCALL Early-Stage Researchers Conference 2019

Quantum Communications for ALL (QCALL) is a European Innovative Training Network that endeavours to take the next necessary steps to bring the developing quantum technologies closer to the doorsteps of end users. QCALL will empower a nucleus of 15 doctoral researchers in this area to provide secure communications in the European continent and, in the long run, to its connections worldwide.

The QCALL Early-Stage Researchers Conference (ESRC) is a four-day conference on quantum communications, aimed at Master and PhD students as well as early post-doctoral researchers.

The conference will feature five well-known invited speakers, introducing each of the main topics of the conference, and possibly an industrial session will be organised. There will also be time for around 30 talks by other participants as well as a poster session. The topics covered by the conference will be:

Entanglement-based Quantum Communications

Security of QKD

Satellite QKD

MDI-QKD and TF-QKD

Component technology (Chip-based QKD, detectors, QRNG, etc.)

The mathematical problem we plan to tackle takes its source in questions concerning graphene and the estimate of energy gaps. The model we study is a two dimensional massless Dirac operator on a regular bounded domain. We are interested in estimating the asymptotic of the gap at zero. More precisely, we want to derive the asymptotics for large magnetic field of the first negative eigenvalue and the first positive eigenvalue.

Francqui Symposium — Wavefunctions and Entanglement in Quantum Field Theory

Résumé:
The symposium aims at bringing together experts on the topics of variational and nonperturbative methods in quantum field theory, topological and conformal field theory, and quantum entanglement in QFT. Those topics have recently experienced a revival of interest due to advances made in the field of quantum computing and quantum entanglement theory. Area laws and entanglement Hamiltonians have opened up a new window into the structure of quantum correlations in strongly correlated systems, and led to a revisit of the variational principle for quantum field theories in the form of quantum tensor networks. Dualities, as symbolized in the picture of Magritte above, and nonlocal symmetries are proving to be manifestations of emerging order in the entanglement structure, and tensor networks provide representations for the underlying tensor fusion categories. The main purpose of this conference is to bring together the different communities that have been working on the many theoretical aspects of this program.

The fields of spintronics, quantum magnetism, topological matter, and quantum criticality have seen progress with breakthroughs in concepts, techniques, and materials. The unifying goals of these fields are to understand novel collective effects that arise in quantum condensed matter systems with common underlying physics, often united through topology and common symmetries. Despite these common goals, these areas of research are still largely unconnected. This program will offer an opportunity for synergies and defining of new directions.

This conference will highlight the diverse applications of emerging spatio-temporal quantum control techniques as well as the novel theoretical and experimental tools being developed to advance these techniques. The implications of many-body quantum control are far-reaching: stabilizing entangled states, realizing new forms of topological order, enhanced precision measurements, guided quantum dynamics for computation, probing quantum chaos, etc. The goal of this conference will be to survey both recent experimental developments in both spatial and temporal control for analysis of many-body quantum optical systems, and recent theoretical progress, with the purpose of identifying fruitful future areas for exploration.

In the last decade a number of experimental and theoretical discoveries have caused a notable revival of interest in systems with large local Hilbert spaces which realize a variety of intriguing and largely unexplored phenomena such as non-Fermi-liquid behavior, exotic quantum criticality, orbitally selective Mott physics, multipolar/hidden orders and more. While many models have been proposed for each of these phenomena, a single framework to understand the systems with multiple degrees of freedom and, consequently, richer order parameters and richer quasiparticles, is missing.

Modularity is at the heart of many deep results in mathematics--from the proof of Fermat’s last theorem to moonshine to the Langlands correspondence. At the same time, modular group representations and automorphic forms underlie many interesting physical phenomena in quantum field theory and string theory, including understanding of dualities, boundary conditions, and supersymmetric black holes, among other things. This conference will bring together physicists and mathematicians to discuss emerging connections between a web of fundamental objects in physics and mathematics, united in the crucial role played by modularity.

Entangled Quantum States of Matter: Classification, Creation, Manipulation, Detection

This conference will explore many aspects of entangled quantum states of matter, with an eye towards their eventual experimental realization. These include non-Fermi liquids, symmetry-protected topological states, and topologically-ordered quantum matter such as gapped and gapless quantum spin liquids. Some of these states harbor nontrivial boundary or edge modes which will also be highlighted. Different topics will be covered including: the classification of entangled topological states which provide a roadmap of what is possible; investigations on how to engineer models built with realistic ingredients guided by theoretical explorations of their phase diagrams; and proposals for the right observables to detect and manipulate these states which can bring them closer from an abstract idea to reality. This conference will bring together experts on many aspects of highly-entangled quantum matter and help connect experts on mathematical aspects of classification and those with numerical expertise that provide information on phase diagrams with experimentalists striving to engineer these states in the lab.
