New Directions in Quantum Information

Résumé:
Quantum Information Science is a major frontier of modern science and technology, exploring physical situations that are classically impossible. An important technological application, already available today, is secure quantum key distribution realized by spatially separated entangled quantum states. This program will be centered around new fundamental physical questions that will emerge from successful current and future quantum technologies. The focus will be on effects and phenomena that appear already in low-dimensional quantum systems, and which are (or may soon be) experimentally realized.

Exploring Open Quantum Systems in Quantum Simulators

Résumé:
Quantum simulators relying on the coherent control of trapped ions, superconducting quantum circuits, cold atoms and molecules in optical lattices or reconfigurable trap arrays, and integrated quantum optics have become available and are operative in hundreds of different laboratories worldwide. These flexible and highly precise quantum devices present a unique opportunity to resolve outstanding problems in one of the least understood areas of quantum physics, namely, the dynamics of open many-body quantum systems far from thermal equilibrium. Unlike closed quantum systems, where the many-body extension of the Schroedinger equation is well-established, the accurate and efficient description of open quantum systems, especially beyond weak coupling and in the absence of memory effects, presents a formidable task. This conference brings together experimentalists working in different platforms with theorists pushing the boundaries of open quantum systems in fundamental quantum theory and in developing numerical methods, including quantum trajectories, density matrix renormalization and tensor network approaches. Exploring the paradigm beyond markovian master equations will be crucial for developing a comprehensive theoretical framework for the understanding of non equilibrium phenomena and formulating a thermodynamically consistent theory of open quantum systems for advanced materials and nanodevice design in quantum simulators.

Effective Theories of Quantum Phases of Matter

Physical systems look different when observed at different resolutions: what appears as a continuum liquid to the naked eye becomes a cluster of jiggling atoms when observed at the resolution of an electron microscope. Effective field theory provides a description of physics in terms of degrees of freedom appropriate to a given resolution. Over the last couple of decades, physicists have developed effective field theory tools which, to a large extent, unify fields as diverse as atomic and condensed-matter physics, particle and nuclear physics, and cosmology. The ensuing interaction between different branches of physics has never been as fruitful as it is now. Numerous physical phenomena, first predicted and studied in high-energy physics, have found their realization in novel materials. On the other hand, the richness of condensed-matter physics provides a lasting source of inspiration for new developments in high-energy physics and cosmology. Extremely useful in general, the effective field theory tools become indispensable for quantum phases of matter whose low-energy physics is driven by collective excitations, either due to the presence of spontaneous symmetry breaking or due to strong microscopic interactions. The aim of this program is to give a new impulse to a further development of this exciting interdisciplinary field. We bring together leading practitioners working on effective theories of quantum phases of matter across several branches of physics. Our goal is to map out important open problems with broad relevance and look for new directions towards their solution, to reinvigorate existing collaborations and foster new connections.

The main goal of the conference is to contribute to a better understanding of the behavior of quantum systems out of equilibrium. To reach this aim we also need to improve our knowledge of systems in equilibrium and steady state situations. The conference will thus address foundations of quantum physics, quantum many body physics, statistical physics, and thermodynamics relying on the theoretical and experimental methods of condensed matter physics and quantum optics. The systems considered will be mainly on the order of mesoscopic (nanoscale) size, and include those of both natural and artificial origin. Special attention will be given to non-equilibrium quantum systems, physics of quantum information and manifestation of quantum effects in biological systems. Subjects from astrophysics, gravitation or cosmology related to the above scope will also be included.

Recent advances in the band theory of crystalline materials have singled out topology as a key ingredient in the modern classification of matter, with major impact on measurable electronic properties. Topological band theory has also grown into an emerging paradigm in many areas of physics, and is now used to characterize metamaterials, including photonic, atomic, acoustic, and elastic systems, in both the quantum and classical regimes. As our understanding of topology in physics widens, the incorporation of out-of-equilibrium phenomena is gaining in importance.

This conference is intended to kickstart the program "Spin and Heat Transport in Quantum and Topological Materials" which combines the fields of spintronics, quantum magnetism, topological matter, and quantum criticality. It explores connections between the most recent experimental and theoretical progress in these areas, setting the stage for the program and establishing targets and key grand challenges.

Résumé:
A complete understanding of quantum gravity, as it pertains to our universe, remains one of the biggest challenges in theoretical physics. As our observational constraints on the early universe and black hole physics improve, this theoretical challenge has become even more urgent. This conference aims to explore the latest developments in quantum gravity and string theory, ranging from ideas motivated from holographic dualities to new results developing the landscape of string theory vacua.

This is the 9th in series of international conference focussing on aspects of quantum walks and quantum simulation. Quantum simulation has recently established itself as an area of study in quantum physics that merges fundamental and applied questions. Such an interaction results in a more operational understanding of aspects of quantum mechanics in terms of nature description. The idea to simulate the dynamics of a quantum system by a quantum device was first introduced by Richard Feynman and developed in different frameworks, from mathematics to Computer Science and fundamental physics.

Spatiotemporal Control for Probing New Many-Body Physics

Résumé:
This conference will highlight the diverse applications of emerging spatio-temporal quantum control techniques as well as the novel theoretical and experimental tools being developed to advance these techniques. The implications of many-body quantum control are far-reaching: stabilizing entangled states, realizing new forms of topological order, enhanced precision measurements, guided quantum dynamics for computation, probing quantum chaos, etc. The goal of this conference will be to survey both recent experimental developments in both spatial and temporal control for analysis of many-body quantum optical systems, and recent theoretical progress, with the purpose of identifying fruitful future areas for exploration.
