Q-Mat — National Conference On Quantum Condensed Matter

In the spirit of a community meeting, Q-mat will seek participation of a large fraction of active researchers in this area. We plan to have 6 overview talks (1 hr duration) encompassing broad areas of quantum condensed matter and about 50 invited talks (30 min each) in two parallel sessions spread over 3 days. In addition we will have one evening lecture and one public lecture. We will try to accommodate as many speakers as possible in two parallel sessions. A fraction of the talks would be reserved for junior researchers, i.e. post-docs and senior graduate students, which will be chosen from submitted abstracts. There will also be poster sessions for community members/junior students. In addition, we will have corporate sessions for talks given by equipment manufacturers/suppliers.

Since the beginning of quantum mechanics, emergent many-body phenomena represent the grand-challenge in theoretical condensed-matter physics. Indeed, static mean-field approaches fail to capture even the simplest many-body effects, while diagrammatic techniques generally fail in the regime characteristic of strong correlations. The introduction of dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) has revolutionized this field. Two insights paved the way to this paradigm shift. The first is that in the limit of infinite dimensions all contributions to the self-energy become local. The second is that the locality of the self-energy makes it possible to build a new type of mean-field theory, dynamical in nature, by mapping a correlated lattice problem onto a self-consistent quantum-impurity model. In the last decades, thanks to advances in model building combined with the development of flexible and numerically exact quantum-impurity solvers, DMFT was successfully linked with ab-initio density-functional techniques, making it the method of choice for the investigation of correlated electron materials.

Advances in Quantum Simulation with Ultracold Atoms

Quantum simulation is an exceptionally vivid field of research embracing several areas of physics, ranging from atomic, molecular, and optical physics, to condensed-matter, nuclear, gravitational and high-energy physics, as well as quantum information science. The goal of quantum simulation is to address important, yet unsolved quantum Hamiltonians by “synthesizing” them in experimental quantum systems so as to directly measure the properties of these models, otherwise very hard to be handled by classical computations. This approach is well summarized by Feynman's own words: 'Nature isn’t classical, dammit, and if you want to make a simulation of nature, you’d better make it quantum mechanical, and by golly it’s a wonderful problem, because it doesn’t look so easy'. Ultracold atomic quantum gases, in particular, offer a unique setting for quantum simulation of interacting many-body systems. The high degree of controllability, the novel detection possibilities and the extreme physical parameter regimes that can be reached provide an exciting complementary set-up compared e.g. with natural condensed-matter systems, allowing the study of novel quantum states of matter that are very hard to achieve, or are completely inaccessible in Nature.
