SSPCM 2018 is intended for the international condensed matter physics community working on cutting-edge topics in both theoretical and experimental physics, and it aims at giving an overview of current trends and developments in the field. The subject matter of the school covers a wide range of problems and phenomena which are deeply entangled throughout condensed matter physics, including the role of symmetry and topology in condensed matter, correlations in low-dimensional systems, quasi-particle excitations, quantum dynamics, the properties of nanostructures, spintronics, topological insulators, quantum information, and many more. The conference has the character of an advanced school in theoretical physics and is addressed both to young scientists at the beginning of their career, as well as to more senior and well established experts. A series of fundamental lectures will give an introduction to the field, while focused seminars explore some of the most recent findings. All participants will have the opportunity to present their work, and contributed papers will be published in the conference proceedings in Acta Physica Polonica A.

Autumn School on Correlated Electrons: DMFT -- From Infinite Dimensions to Real Materials
17 sep 2018 - 21 sep 2018 • Jülich, Allemagne
Résumé:
Since the beginning of quantum mechanics, emergent many-body phenomena represent the grand-challenge in theoretical condensed-matter physics. Indeed, static mean-field approaches fail to capture even the simplest many-body effects, while diagrammatic techniques generally fail in the regime characteristic of strong correlations. The introduction of dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) has revolutionized this field. Two insights paved the way to this paradigm shift. The first is that in the limit of infinite dimensions all contributions to the self-energy become local. The second is that the locality of the self-energy makes it possible to build a new type of mean-field theory, dynamical in nature, by mapping a correlated lattice problem onto a self-consistent quantum-impurity model. In the last decades, thanks to advances in model building combined with the development of flexible and numerically exact quantum-impurity solvers, DMFT was successfully linked with ab-initio density-functional techniques, making it the method of choice for the investigation of correlated electron materials.

GISAS 2018 — Grazing Incidence Scattering Summer School
17 sep 2018 - 21 sep 2018 • Bayreuth, Allemagne
Résumé:
This summer school invites master students and PhD students to join with their own thin film samples suitable for grazing incidence small and wide angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS/GIWAXS) and grazing incidence small angle neutron scattering (GISANS) measurements. The unique program will consist of lectures on experiment design and scattering theory, necessary to understand the method and to choose experimental parameters. The individual X-ray experiments will be carried out remotely at the ALS, Berkeley, USA, while the neutron experiments take place at the FRM II on site. Furthermore there will be practical sessions with introduction to data analysis tools (HipGISAXS and BornAgain) and tutorials in applying them, where each student will work on their own data. Overall, this summer school will prepare students to carry out grazing incidence experiments at large scale facilities including the relevant data analysis. Application via mini-proposals is open now. The number of participants is limited and acceptance is in order of submission.
