Third Mandelstam Theoretical Physics School and Workshop — Recent Advances in AdS/CFT

Stanley Mandelstam was an eminent South African-born American Theoretical Physicist and a Wits graduate. He made seminal contributions to Particle Physics and String Theory. This series of schools, named in Stanley Mandelstam's honor, aims to expose local South African Theoretical Physicists, both post-graduate students and academics, to exciting recent developments in Theoretical High Energy Physics. The School is followed by a high level workshop that aims to stimulate discussion and interaction which might lead to new research directions and collaborations. The meeting brings leading experts together to accomplish these goals.

The Young Researchers Integrability School and Workshop (YRISW) is an ongoing series of meetings devoted to review the latest advances in exact techniques in theoretical physics, at the frontier with mathematics. Past editions have focused on exact results in certain two-dimensional quantum field theories and in string theory which can be tackled with the toolbox of integrable models. The aim of the current school is the investigation of two dimensional conformal field theories, i.e. of quantum field theories that possess conformal invariance at the quantum level. This is a central topic in theoretical physics, from high-energy to condensed-matter physics, and it has deep connections with mathematics.

50th IFF Spring School 2019: Scattering! Soft, Functional and Quantum Materials

The IFF Spring School 2019 will provide a solid introduction into scattering methods for the investigation of condensed matter and biomaterials. Advanced methods at novel large scale facilities such as the x-ray free electron laser XFEL or the MW spallation sources will be highlighted. The power of modern scattering techniques will be demonstrated by examples for topical research in various fields - from Quantum Materials through Functional Materials to Soft Matter and Life Sciences. Finally, complementary techniques such as electron spectroscopy, modern electron microscopy etc. will be presented.

The participants of the Spring School are expected to have a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics and physics or chemistry of condensed matter. The School comprises around 50 hours of lectures plus discussions, and will be held in English.

The ESRIC super-resolution summer school is a five-day residential course held in Edinburgh. The course is designed to give participants a thorough grounding in super-resolution microscopy in an informal and intimate setting. It brings together leading academics and the major suppliers of super-resolution microscopes to provide expertise and guidance in the theory, practise and analysis of structured illumination microscopy (SIM), stimulated emission depletion microscopy (STED), AiryScan and single molecule localization microscopies (PALM, sptPALM and dSTORM). Participants will have ample time to gain project specific advice from all of the academic experts and suppliers through dedicated Q&A sessions and informal social events. The course is suitable for anyone with prior experience of fluorescence microscopy looking to exploit the benefits of super-resolution microscopy in their research.

Since Richard Feynman recognized that quantum mechanics can be formulated in terms of path integrals, various applications for this useful calculational technique have emerged among physicists in such diverse areas as quantum field theory, elementary particle physics, nuclear and subnuclear physics, atomic and molecular physics, quantum chemistry, condensed matter physics, complex systems, and astrophysics. Despite its broad range of dissemination neither the unifying approach to quantum and statistical field theory, i.e., the Feynman path integral, nor the advanced methods to address interacting quantum and statistical field theories are much covered in standard curricula. It is for this reason that this advanced summer school on path integration techniques aims to provide students and young independent researchers with a hands-on introduction in using path integrals for modern physics and to expose the participants of the school to methods that go beyond the standard tools box of field theory. In order to create a common basis and set the stage for subsequent lectures, an introduction to the Feynman path integral in quantum mechanics will be given at the beginning of the school, followed by a selection of more advanced methods of quantum and statistical field theory.
