School and workshop — SPR-KKR hands-on course on magnetism and spectroscopy - calculations with spin polarized relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (SPR-KKR) code

Résumé:
The hands-on course will focus on electronic calculations based on the KKR band structure methodology. This approach, based on multiple scattering theory, gives access to the Greens function of both ordered and disordered systems, as well as layered systems, surfaces and clusters in real space, allowing a direct connection to a wide variety of spectroscopies and magnetic properties. The Munich SPR-KKR code is a uniquely powerful software package implementing a wide variety of spectroscopies, transport and magnetic properties that are rather difficult to access using most electronic structure codes, such as ARPES calculations or the calculation of higher-order magnetic exchange interactions. The code will be introduced together with the associated graphical user interface, xband. With applications in magnetism and transport as well as calculations of a number of spectroscopies, the hands-on course will be of interest to both theoreticians and experimentalists working in different areas of materials science. Participants will be encouraged to submit posters and present them at the course.

Particle growth in turbulence

The question of how particles and droplets can grow in a turbulent environment is of great current interest in many fields, in astrophysics, cloud microphysics, in biology, and in the engineering sciences. For example, coagulation and condensation in turbulent clouds turn microscopic cloud droplets into rain drops. In astrophysics, planetesimals are thought to form by aggregation of microscopic dust grains in the turbulent environment surrounding a forming star. In both cases, turbulence is believed to be a crucial factor for particle growth. Yet the microscopic mechanisms determining this growth are far from understood. In the past few years there has been substantial progress in understanding the mechanisms that determine how particles move in turbulence, albeit mostly for simplified model systems. The challenge is now to understand how these mechanisms lead to rapid particle growth.

The week-long school will focus on computational and theoretical large-scale structure, while allowing in-depth exploration of how current research tests theory with data. CIMPA-IASBS Research School on Spectra in Riemannian and Symplectic Geometry,

Résumé:
One of the fascinating bridges between classical mechanics and quantum physics is expressed in the fact that the length spectrum and the Laplace spectrum of a closed Riemannian manifold determine each other (at least generically). Similarly, the set of lengths of the closed orbits of a billiard table and the Laplace spectrum of that table determine each other, at least for certain billiard tables. The main goal of this school is to introduce graduate students and young researchers to basic facts on these two spectra, and to the above correspondence. The length spectrum generalizes to the action spectrum of an autonomous Hamiltonian function. Floer homology filtered by the action spectrum can be used to construct so-called action selectors, that are a principal tool in modern symplectic geometry and dynamics, yielding simple proofs of Gromov's nonsqueezing theorem, the Weinstein conjecture in R^{2n}, the existence of closed orbits in a magnetic fields, etc. The second goal is to understand this relevance of the action spectrum in symplectic geometry. A third, more hypothetical, goal is to see which parts of the two sides can be related.

Prerequisites: We expect that students have had courses in real analysis of several variables, know what an ordinary differential equation is, and have followed a course on curves and surfaces. More knowledge is useful, but not necessary to follow the lectures.

The two topics, combinatorial theory of free resolutions and differential graded algebra techniques in homological algebra, each have a long and rich history in commutative algebra and its applications to algebraic geometry. Free resolutions are at the center of much of the study in the field and these two approaches give powerful tools for their study and their application to other problems. Neither of these topics is generally covered in graduate courses. Furthermore, recent developments have exhibited exciting interplay between the two subjects. The purpose of the school is to introduce the graduate students to these subjects and these new developments. The school will consist of two lectures each day and carefully planned problem sessions designed to reinforce the foundational material and to give them a chance to experiment with problems involving the interplay between the two subjects.

The NXSchool is designed to introduce students to the capabilities available at U.S. neutron and x-ray user facilities and pays for students’ travel, meals and lodging costs. Lectures, presented by researchers from academia, industry, and national laboratories, include basic tutorials on the principles of neutron and x-ray scattering theory, the characteristics of neutron and synchrotron sources, as well as seminars on the application of scattering methods to a variety of scientific subjects. As part of the school, students also conduct a series of short experiments to obtain some hands-on experience using instruments at neutron and synchrotron sources, both at Oak Ridge's Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor facilities (1st week) and at Argonne's Advanced Photon Source (2nd week).

This summer graduate school is a collabroation between MSRI and the FORTH-IACM Institute in Crete. The purpose of the school is to introduce graduate students to some of the most important geometric evolution equations. This is an area of geometric analysis that lies at the interface of differential geometry and partial differential equations. The lectures will begin with an introduction to nonlinear diffusion equations and continue with classical results on the Ricci Flow, the Mean curvature flow and other fully non-linear extrinsic flows such as the Gauss curvature flow. The lectures will also include geometric applications such as isoperimetric inequalities, topological applications such as the Poincar? onjecture, as well as recent important developments related to the study of singularities and ancient solutions.

Graduate Summer School: Mathematics of Topological Phases of Matter

The application of topology to physics has become an integral part of a second quantum revolution in the sciences. The discovery of topological insulators and progress towards topological superconductors realizing non-abelian statistics has moved topological phases of matter onto the center stage in the interaction of topology and physics beyond the quantum Hall effect. While topological physics has been intensively investigated by physicists for the last few decades, the mathematical theory lags far behind. One challenge is formulating the right definition of topological phases of matter, which is closely related to the notoriously difficult problem of finding a rigorous mathematical formulation of quantum field theory. In this summer school, we will focus on two relatively mature foundational topics, and two new directions in the mathematics of topological phases of matter.

The Kudowa Summer School is primarily intended for PhD students, for undergraduate students but experienced scientists who, coming from other disciplines are also welcome to participate. The school will provide an overview of the various fusion and plasma aspects, participants will have an opportunity to learn more about scientific progress on main fusion devices, meet and discuss these issues with the famous scientists.

Foundations and Frontiers of Probabilistic Proofs

In recent years, such probabilistic proofs received much attention due to a new motivation, delegation of computation, which is the emphasis of this summer school. This paradigm admits ultra-fast protocols that allow one party to check the correctness of the computation performed by another, untrusted, party. These protocols have even been realized within recently-deployed technology, for example, as part of cryptographic constructions known as succinct non-interactive arguments of knowledge (SNARKs). This summer school will provide an introduction to the field of probabilistic proofs and the beautiful mathematics behind it, as well as prepare students for conducting cutting-edge research in this area.

The theory of algebraic curves, arguably the oldest branch of algebraic geometry, has seen major developments in recent years, for example in the study of syzygies, and around questions about moduli spaces and Hilbert schemes of curves. The theory is rich in research activity and unsolved problems. There is an encyclopedic work by Arbarello, Cornalba, Griffiths and Harris, but there is no modern text that could be used as a textbook and that goes beyond the basics of the theory. We have embarked on a project to write a book at roughly the level of the wonderful book on complex algebraic surfaces by Arnaud Beauville.

The purpose of the summer school is to introduce graduate students to key mainstream directions in the recent development of geometry, which sprang from Riemannian Geometry in an attempt to use its methods in various contexts of non-smooth geometry. This concerns recent developments in metric generalizations of the theory of nonpositively curved spaces and discretizations of methods in geometry, geometric measure theory and global analysis. The metric geometry perspective gave rise to new results and problems in Riemannian Geometry as well.

The Mainz Institute for Theoretical Physics will host a 2020 summer school for Ph.D. students in theoretical physics, the fifth of an annual series. The main theme of the school is "Scattering Amplitudes", ranging from recent new formal developments to precision calculations. Topics include lectures on the geometry of scattering amplitudes, on mathematical functions associated to loop amplitudes, on phenomenological applications in jet physics and on applications in perturbative gravity. The aim of the school is thus to provide a concise overview of the most important theory tools to carry out innovative research in the field of scattering amplitudes.

The study of nonnegative polynomials and sums of squares is a classical area of real algebraic geometry dating back to Hilbert's 17th problem. It also has rich connections to real analysis via duality and moment problems. In the last 15 years, sums of squares relaxations have found a wide array of applications from very applied areas (e.g., robotics, computer vision, and machine learning) to theoretical applications (e.g., extremal combinatorics, theoretical computer science).

The subject of this year’s school is “The Impact and Consequences of Energetic Particles on Fusion Plasmas”. As the start of ITER operations approaches, it is timely to address this multidisciplinary topic that includes plasma self-heating by fusion-born alpha-particles, the influence of energetic particles on stability, diagnosing energetic particle transport and loss, and understanding runaway electrons. The ITER International School aims to prepare young scientists and engineers for working in the field of nuclear fusion and in research applications associated with the ITER Project. The adoption of a “school format” was a consequence of the need to prepare future scientists and engineers on a range of different subjects and to provide them with a wide overview of the interdisciplinary skills required by the ITER project.

The workshop will be centered around mini-courses, both on classical fixed-point theory and on modern techniques such as duality theory, spectra, and trace methods in algebraic K-theory.

The intended audience for this summer school should be familiar with the material in Hatcher (except the appendices). This reflects our goal that the school be accessible to second and third year students with an interest in algebraic topology from any PhD granting institution. The school will be structured around a few mini-courses, which will run in an active-learning style.

Powder-diffraction methods have demonstrated an ever increasing range of applications in materials science, chemistry, physics, life sciences and engineering. Modern synchrotron-radiation methods not only provide data of exceptional quality, but have allowed researchers to perform previously inaccessible experiments. Along with determining the atomic structure and the relative abundance of crystalline phases in bulk samples, information on disordered materials, microstructural features, defects and their evolution in response to external stimuli over a wide range of timescales is now possible. The school, to be held at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, Switzerland, will give a broad overview of all the modern possibilities using synchrotron radiation, starting with a general theoretical introduction to the various methods and applications.
