TALENT Course 11 — TALENT course on "Learning from Data: Bayesian Methods and Machine Learning"
10 jui 2019 - 28 jui 2019 • University of York, Royaume-Uni
Résumé:
While most nuclear-physics Ph.D. students are taught some standard (frequentist) statistics as part of their course work, very few encounter Bayesian methods until they are engaged in research. But Bayesian methods provide a coherent and compelling framework to think about inference, and so can be applied to many important questions in nuclear physics. The overall learning goal of this school is to take students who have had no previous exposure to Bayes’ theorem and show them how it can be applied to problems of parameter estimation, model selection, and machine learning.

Bad Honnef Physics School on Methods of Path Integration in Modern Physics
25 aou 2019 - 30 aou 2019 • Bad Honnef, Allemagne
Résumé:
Since Richard Feynman recognized that quantum mechanics can be formulated in terms of path integrals, various applications for this useful calculational technique have emerged among physicists in such diverse areas as quantum field theory, elementary particle physics, nuclear and subnuclear physics, atomic and molecular physics, quantum chemistry, condensed matter physics, complex systems, and astrophysics. Despite its broad range of dissemination neither the unifying approach to quantum and statistical field theory, i.e., the Feynman path integral, nor the advanced methods to address interacting quantum and statistical field theories are much covered in standard curricula. It is for this reason that this advanced summer school on path integration techniques aims to provide students and young independent researchers with a hands-on introduction in using path integrals for modern physics and to expose the participants of the school to methods that go beyond the standard tools box of field theory. In order to create a common basis and set the stage for subsequent lectures, an introduction to the Feynman path integral in quantum mechanics will be given at the beginning of the school, followed by a selection of more advanced methods of quantum and statistical field theory.

Résumé:
The Summer School is organized by IHP - Innovations for High Performance Microelectronics and Materials Science coordination group of University of Rome Tor Vergata. The event will take place at IHP (Frankfurt (Oder) - Germany) and University of Rome Tor Vergata, Department of Industrial Engineering (Rome - Italy) from 25th until 31st of August 2019.

The objective of this summer school: Novel technologies enable the future demands of the society for increasing high speed data transfer and broad band communication systems. Silicon photonics is a key enabling technology which fulfills these demands. Beside these mainstream applications Si-Photonic technologies in particular electronic-photonic-integrated-circuit (EPIC) technologies are foreseen for extra-terrestrial and medical applications as intra satellite communication. For this reasons higher requirements with respect to stability and reliability of components and modules. Purpose of the “German-Italian-Summer-School” is to provide inside view to recent developments in the field of photonics technologies, circuits and systems. Moreover novel developments and challenges for high performance technologies in harsh environments are presented and discussed. PHOTONICA2019 — VII International School and Conference on Photonics
26 aou 2019 - 30 aou 2019 • Belgrade, Serbie
Résumé:
The International School and Conference on Photonics - PHOTONICA, is a biennial event held in Belgrade since 2007. It is conceived as a forum for the education of young researchers, the exchange of knowledge and ideas, as well as the strengthening of cooperation among scientists from academic institutions, universities and research laboratories in industry, working in this attractive field. So far, PHOTONICA has proven to be a very successful conference in the region, recording constant growth among eminent scientists and young researchers from around the world. This year we expect a record number of participants, around 300 scientists from the country and abroad, of which over thirty plenary and introductory lecturers. Among them are some of the most famous names from basic and applied research in photonics that have contributed to the development of light technologies. In order to boost transfer of light technology from academia to industry, mixing it with a useful knowledge from IT sector, for the first time we organize a satellite event - „Machine learning in Photonics“, which will be realized in the form of a special symposium. With its blend character of a conference, school, and exhibition, PHOTONICA (this year seventh in the row) has become an internationally recognized forum for education of young scientists, exchange of new ideas and a starting point of new collaborations and partnerships. It is accompanied by media, social networks, and high interest in both science and R&D circles.

Students will gain a comprehensive grounding in modern techniques and applications at both steady state and pulsed neutron sources and have the opportunity to hear about the latest research being carried out with the technique. The school has its origins in 1966,as the first one of its kind, and many famous neutron practitioners have attended the schools of the past 50 years.

correl19 — Autumn School on Correlated Electrons: Many-Body Methods for Real Materials
16 sep 2019 - 20 sep 2019 • Jülich, Allemagne
Résumé:
Emergent many-body phenomena are at the core of the exciting properties of strongly correlated materials. Understanding them requires confronting the many-body problem. While, at first, this appears to be an impossible task, substantial progress has been made by combining physical insights with modern numerical approaches. A successful strategy is to devise methods that use the understanding gained from simple models for the construction of physically motivated wave-functions. Results for the ground state of real materials can then be obtained by optimizing them via deterministic or stochastic algorithms. The methods of choice for determining spectra are instead based on Green functions. The key idea is to map the complex realistic many-body Hamiltonian to a simpler auxiliary model that can be solved numerically.

Lecture — Christmas Lecture: The Physics of a Youth Hostel

Institute of Physics – IOP
Résumé:
In my volunteer role as manager of a youth hostel in remote Welsh mountainous terrain, I’ve needed to apply physics to provide the services expected by today’s visitors. There’s no mains water, no landline phone, and no mobile phone signal. Our organisation also has a second hostel which has no mains electricity. The hostels are looked after by a different volunteer warden each week, while I’m 200 miles away in Wiltshire. Everything must be sufficiently reliable to function under those challenging conditions.

Particle growth in turbulence
18 mai 2020 - 12 jui 2020 • Stockholm, Suède
Organisateur:
Nordita - Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics
Résumé:
The question of how particles and droplets can grow in a turbulent environment is of great current interest in many fields, in astrophysics, cloud microphysics, in biology, and in the engineering sciences. For example, coagulation and condensation in turbulent clouds turn microscopic cloud droplets into rain drops. In astrophysics, planetesimals are thought to form by aggregation of microscopic dust grains in the turbulent environment surrounding a forming star. In both cases, turbulence is believed to be a crucial factor for particle growth. Yet the microscopic mechanisms determining this growth are far from understood. In the past few years there has been substantial progress in understanding the mechanisms that determine how particles move in turbulence, albeit mostly for simplified model systems. The challenge is now to understand how these mechanisms lead to rapid particle growth.
