HPPAW — First Helicon Plasma Physics and Applications Workshop
22 sep 2020 - 25 sep 2020 • Hefei, Chine
Organisateur:
Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences
Résumé:
Following theoretical and numerical explorations of helicon discharge in 1960s, the first helicon plasma was obtained experimentally by Rod Boswell in 1970 at Flinders University of South Australia (refer to the first publication of Phys. Lett. 33A: 457–458, 1970). Due to its remarkable ionization efficiency and high plasma density, helicon plasma has been used widely in many fields such as semiconductor processing, plasma propulsion, electrodeless beam source, laser plasma source, plasma source for magnetic fusion study, Alfvén wave propagation, RF current drive, and laser accelerators. Given that the detailed mechanism of helicon discharge is still not fully understood and significant advances have been made since the last mini-conference on helicon plasma sources (part of 2007 APS-DPP Meeting), it is therefore of great necessity and importance to organize a workshop for scientists in this field to have discussions and exchange ideas. This will be also a 50th anniversary of helicon plasma generation (1970-2020). The 1st Helicon Plasma Physics and Applications Workshop (HPPAW) will be held by the Institute of Plasma Physics (Chinese Academy of Sciences) in September 22-25, 2020, Hefei, China. It will be in form of invited reviewing presentations and oral presentations on new developments and frontiers of helicon plasma physics and applications.

9ICPDP 2020 — 9th International Conference on the Physics of Dusty Plasmas
26 oct 2020 - 30 oct 2020 • Moscou, Russie
Organisateur:
Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences
Résumé:
The history of ICPDP started in 1996 in Goa (India) as a response to growing interest in the topics of dusty plasmas, when the liquid and crystalline plasma was discovered. We continue a series of International Conferences on the Physics of Dusty Plasmas which take place every three years at different locations around the world (Goa, India 1996; Hakone, Japan 1999; Durban, South Africa 2002; Orleans, France 2005; Azores, Portugal 2008, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany 2011, New Delhi, India 2014, Prague, Czech Republic 2017). The conference provides a unique opportunity for disseminating the present status of dusty plasma physics worldwide and especially to young researchers. Ninth ICPDP conference is hosted by the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Science (IKI), Moscow, Russia. IKI acronym comes from Russian “Institut Kosmicheskih Issledovanyi”, which is Space Research Institute, and is used in English as is. IKI designs and builds scientific instruments for space experiments, acts as principal organization for various scientific space projects and missions, and uses the data of space probes to deepen our understanding of space and Earth. At present a significant topic of research at IKI is the space dust and dusty plasmas.

Modeling, observing, and understanding flows and magnetic fields in the Earth's core and in the Sun
30 nov 2020 - 04 dec 2020 • Isaac Newton Institute, Cambridge, Royaume-Uni
Organisateur:
INI – Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences
Résumé:
Like many other stars and planets, the Earth and the Sun possess magnetic fields built by dynamo action. Unlike the magnetism of most other astrophysical objects, though, the Solar and terrestrial fields have been closely studied for generations, yielding a wide variety of observational constraints that continue to challenge theory and defy prediction. Both analytical theory and numerical simulations have cumulatively yielded significant insight into how both objects build their magnetism, but a comprehensive understanding of this process has remained elusive. This meeting will aim to scrutinise and assess the results of such modelling efforts by comparison to the vast and ongoing array of observations of both the Earth and the Sun.

Is There a Common Thread to Layering in Atmospheres, Oceans and Plasmas?
05 jan 2021 - 08 jan 2021 • UC Santa Barbara, États-Unis
Organisateur:
Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP)
Résumé:
A fascinating and surprising phenomenon that can occur in fluid and plasma turbulence is the spontaneous formation of arrays of layers in which material properties such as density adopt a so-called “staircase” structure. The most striking examples are potential vorticity staircases in planetary atmospheres, and thermohaline staircases in the oceans. Theoretical considerations suggest that layering also plays an important role in stellar interiors (particularly through various double-diffusive processes) and in fusion confinement devices (the so-called E x B staircase). Understanding the phenomenon of layering is, therefore, not only of intrinsic scientific interest (e.g., is there a common thread to layering in these very different contexts?), but is also crucial for an accurate description of turbulent transport in, for example, models of large-scale ocean flow, the evolution of stellar interiors and confinement in tokamaks.
