Mathematical and Computational Approaches for Solving the Source- Free Einstein Field Equations Virtual Workshop
05 oct 2020 - 09 oct 2020 • Providence RI - Virtual Workshop, États-Unis
Organisateur:
ICERM
Résumé:
This workshop will focus on theoretical and computational approaches to solving the vacuum Einstein field equations (the master equation of general relativity: a nonlinear, coupled, hyperbolic-elliptic PDE system) without matter field sources. A particular important special case is the simulation of two merging black holes, which will be emphasized throughout the workshop. Gravitational wave solutions will be another important aspect of this workshop, and special attention will be given to modeling techniques for the computation of these waves. The topics covered in this workshop will be relevant to both LIGO and LISA scientific efforts.

Mathematical and Computational Approaches for the Einstein Field Equations with Matter Fields Virtual Workshop
26 oct 2020 - 30 oct 2020 • Providence RI - Virtual Workshop, États-Unis
Organisateur:
ICERM
Résumé:
This workshop will focus on theoretical and computational approaches to solving the Einstein field equations (the master equation of general relativity: a nonlinear, coupled, hyperbolic-elliptic PDE system) with (fluid) matter field sources, as typical of binary neutron stars and supernovae. Simulations of these systems are targets of interest to both LIGO and telescopes such as Hubble, Fermi, and CHANDRA. In this workshop, special attention will be given to the governing equations of relativistic (magneto- ) hydrodynamics and multi-scale, multi-physics modeling challenges.

Workshop — Nonlocal Problems in Mathematical Physics, Analysis and Geometry
08 nov 2020 - 13 nov 2020 • Hangzhou, Chine
Organisateur:
Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (IASM) in Hangzhou, China, and the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) in Banff, Canada
Résumé:
Nonlinear problems are problems which solutions satisfy an equation where the different physical constants involved are depending on the solution itself. This dependence can be nonlocal in the sense that it depends on the solution globally. For instance the motion of a population can be influenced by the total population and not only by the population very locally. One of the goals of the workshop is to deepen the human knowledge in this field applied to different situations.

Entropic Regularization of Optimal Transport and Applications
20 jui 2021 - 25 jui 2021 • Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada
Organisateur:
Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS)
Résumé:
The mathematics of optimal transport (OT) has grown to become a unifying theme in many scientific disciplines, from solving purely mathematical problems of analysis, geometry, and partial differential equations to developing revolutionary new methods in economics, statistics, machine learning and artificial intelligence. In the last decade, the impact of optimal transport in the study of geometry was highlighted by two Fields medals (Villani 2010, Figalli 2018). On the other hand, OT has established itself as a viable alternative to classical maximum likelihood based methods in statistics and data science. Other notable applications include generative adversarial network (GAN) in machine learning (Wasserstein GAN), new applications to stem cell biology, and economic applications such as generalizations of the Nobel prize winning Gale-Shapley algorithm, online auctions, and option pricing.

COMD – Semester — Complex Dynamics: from special families to natural generalizations in one and several variables
18 jan 2022 - 27 mai 2022 • Berkeley, Californie, États-Unis
Organisateur:
MRSI – Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Berkeley
Résumé:
Holomorphic dynamics is a vibrant field of mathematics that has seen profound progress over the past 40 years. It has numerous interconnections to other fields of mathematics and beyond. Our semester will focus on three selected classes of dynamical systems: rational maps (postcritically finite and beyond); transcendental maps; and maps in several complex variables. We will put particular emphasis on the interactions between each these, and on connections with adjacent areas of mathematics.
