ESSLLI 2020 — Workshop on Computational and Experimental Explanations in Semantics and Pragmatics
10. Aug 2020 - 14. Aug 2020 • Utrecht, Niederlande
Funded by the European Research Council
The field of natural language semantics has undergone what some refer to as an ‘experimental turn’ and is arguably currently undergoing a ‘computational turn’. By expanding the toolbox available to the semanticist, these two turns have the effect of expanding the phenomena that can be explained and the varieties of semantic explanation that can be offered. For example, experimental methods can help distinguish between alternative explanations of semantic effects, e.g. whether to classify controversial phenomena as implicatures or presuppositions. Similarly, computational models of semantics can generate fine-grained and non-categorical predictions that can fruitfully be tested experimentally. And both kinds of methods can be used to ask questions about the emergence of semantic structures in language, including which factors influence their distribution and typology. Given this wider toolbox and purview, we aim to gather a workshop to showcase exciting new work that develops new semantic explanations using experimental and computational methods, as well as to invite broader reflection on the methodology of semantics now and in its future.
Experimental semantics and pragmatics * Graded/non-categorical semantic theories and explanations * Information-theoretic measures and explanations in semantics and pragmatics * Semantic universals * Learnability and evolution of semantics and pragmatics * Bayesian approaches to semantics and pragmatics * Probing neural models for learned semantic representations * Semantics in emergent communication protocols * The methodology of semantics
Machine Learning Conference
23. Sep 2020 • 's-Hertogenbosch, Niederlande
Artificial intelligence (AI) is back, with a vengeance. Machine learning is taking the industry by storm. Bits&Chips organizes the second edition of the Machine Learning Conference in ‘s-Hertogenbosch on 27 May 2020. The conference brings together industrial and scientific specialists who are applying ML techniques in high tech domains, or are interested in doing so.

HyperMLPA — Hyperspectral Sensing meets Machine Learning and Pattern Analysis
30. Sep 2020 - 02. Okt 2020 • Amsterdam, Niederlande
Spectro Expo
HyperMLPA is an interdisciplinary workshop which aims at bringing together people of different communities and disciplines involved in hyperspectral sensing, machine learning, and pattern analysis. People are invited to contribute in sensor development and calibration, to present and publish new datasets, to present innovative methodological advancements, and to share the latest results and findings of application-oriented work. The HyperMLPA workshop will run for the second time in 2020, as part of the SpectraExpo in parallel with Whispers and SwIImS. HyperMLPA participants will have full access to all Whispers/SwIImS sessions and vice versa.
