What is String Theory? Weaving Perspectives Together
08. Jan 2024 - 19. Apr 2024 • KITP, Santa Barbara, Vereinigte Staaten
Veranstalter:
Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP)
Zusammenfassung:
While it is widely acknowledged that string theory provides a framework for addressing quantum gravitational (and even quantum field theoretic) questions, the precise nature of its organizational principle remains obscure. Nearly three decades ago, when the question “What is string theory?” was asked, the perturbative string worldsheet viewpoint played the starring role. Since then, the discovery of D-branes, string dualities, and the holographic AdS/CFT correspondence has had spacetime dynamics taking center-stage. Much insight has been gleaned from these developments. We now have, for example, a much broader class of string backgrounds with better control over compactifications; strong constraints on the low energy effective field theories; a plethora of gauge-string dualities as well as applications of holographic techniques to a wide class of physical problems; and new angles on semiclassical gravitational physics from a fruitful interplay with quantum information in holography. Together with an influx of new tools and techniques, we have a very rich set of perspectives that illuminate the subject we continue to call string theory. While all these developments are interesting in and of themselves, it is an opportune moment to attempt to synthesize these, often disparate, strands and arrive at a deeper answer to the question in the title.

Spacetime and String Theory
02. Apr 2024 - 05. Apr 2024 • Santa Barbara, Vereinigte Staaten
Veranstalter:
UC Santa Barbara, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP)
Zusammenfassung:
String theory encompasses a wide range of perspectives on the nature of spacetime, from qubit models of black hole information to the string worldsheet. This conference will aim for a new synthesis of the field that builds on recent progress on the role of quantum information, new top-down techniques in string compactification and string field theory, and growing evidence for precise holographic dualities beyond anti-de Sitter space. The focus will be on bridging the divide between the IR and the UV. We will explore recent progress in non-perturbative string theory and stringy constraints on effective field theory, and develop the connections between the gravitational path integral, higher topologies, and entanglement, from low energy to the string scale.

Workshop — Resurgence and Modularity in QFT and String Theory
08. Apr 2024 - 17. Mai 2024 • Firenze , Italien
Veranstalter:
Galileo Galilei Institute
Zusammenfassung:
Modularity is a particularly powerful symmetry with many applications in theoretical physics and mathematics, in particular quantum field theory and string theory. Resurgence is a general framework for advanced asymptotics which effectively unifies perturbative and non-perturbative physics via an intricate network of algebraic relations known as Ecalle’s bridge equations. Modularity and resurgence overlap strongly in the goal of exploring non-perturbative completions of perturbative data, leading to profound new insights into the connection between weak coupling and strong coupling, and in the study of dualities, black holes and quantum gravity. The goal of this GGI Workshop is to bring together experts from these two frontier areas in theoretical and mathematical physics to foster further interaction between different scientific communities and to develop novel strategies to address truly significant problems.

Fundamental Challenges in Theoretical Physics - COST Action Kickoff
13. Mai 2024 - 15. Mai 2024 • Padova, Italien
Veranstalter:
University of Padova (Italy)
Zusammenfassung:
Physicists are able to model the world with remarkable accuracy: from the largest cosmological structures to human-scale condensed-matter systems, all the way down to subatomic particles. However, in many cases the mathematical description underlying such systems is so involved that it is only possible to make predictions in an approximation where the interactions are weak. That is, one starts from a free theory and then switches interactions on, order by order in a small parameter. Not only does this strategy fail when applied to strongly-interacting systems, but it also prevents us from answering fundamental questions in theoretical physics. This Action aims at developing a comprehensive approach for studying strongly-interacting systems in classical and quantum physics by exploiting symmetries, dualities, and the internal consistency of the underlying theories. This calls for the cooperation of researchers from different fields, across Europe and beyond. The Action will bring together theoretical and mathematical physicists with expertise in quantum field theory, string theory, gravity, geometry and information theory, establishing the first network of this kind centred around Europe. Such a critical mass will also boost the visibility and impact of European research in theoretical physics. In parallel, this Action will strive to bring cutting-edge research in theoretical physics to the general public and to high-school students in particular. Working with teachers and local public bodies, it will combat long-standing prejudices on physics and research that turn away bright young students, and that in the long run may fuel indifference if not distrust towards science.

Workshop — BPS Dynamics and Quantum Mathematics
20. Mai 2024 - 21. Mai 2024 • Firenze , Italien
Veranstalter:
Galileo Galilei Institute
Zusammenfassung:
Quantum field theory is not only the unifying language of fundamental forces, but also an extremely rich source of surprising non-perturbative dualities. This success in predicting unexpected new links among seemingly distant subjects has accelerated on many fronts over the past few years, thanks to applications of modern developments in “quantum” mathematics to quantum field theories with supersymmetric, integrable, conformal, topological, or holomorphic structures. The insights emerging from these developments have been the source of important novel results across various branches of theoretical physics and mathematics, hinting at further new connections awaiting discovery. The common ground to all these recent developments is the richness of the physics and mathematics underlying the dynamics of protected (BPS) sectors, whose study ties together fundamental questions in diverse fields in original ways. This workshop aims to highlight and discuss the impact of key developments, to forge new synergies, and to grasp together the hints of far-reaching new opportunities.

Beyond Elliptic Polylogarithms
14. Jun 2024 - 21. Jun 2024 • Oaxaca, Mexiko
Veranstalter:
Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO)
Zusammenfassung:
In recent years, researchers have discovered an unexpected mathematical connection between two different areas of physics. One community of researchers, working to make more precise predictions for particle physics experiments like the Large Hadron Collider, has discovered that their calculations involve increasingly complicated mathematical structures, described by the mathematical discipline of algebraic geometry. Some of these calculations, involving a mathematical object called an elliptic curve, have been the focus of much recent progress. However, more complicated calculations involve yet more complicated geometries. Some of these involve more than one elliptic curve, while others involve a type of geometry studied in a very different area of physics: Calabi-Yau manifolds, previously studied as a potential shape for the extra dimensions of string theory. This workshop will bring together experts in this intersection of topics: particle physicists who aim to tackle calculations with multiple elliptic curves and Calabi-Yau manifolds, string theorists, and mathematicians who study topics that tie the two areas together such as algebraic geometry and combinatorics. The workshop will foster dialogue between these groups, a fresh exchange of ideas that should yield new insights and new progress.

Uncertainty Quantification for Nuclear Physics
24. Jun 2024 - 28. Jun 2024 • Mainz, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
MITP - Mainz Institute for Theoretical Physics, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
Zusammenfassung:
The studies of the nucleonic systems and the nuclear interaction reveal key scientific connections between phenomena on microscopic and macroscopic scales: from the Standard Model of particle physics and nuclear reactions leading to the creation of the elements, to the equation of state of nuclear matter and neutron stars observed via multimessenger astronomy. Precise and accurate predictions of nuclear observables are called for, along the way. With technological advances and theoretical improvements, nuclear physics is progressively entering a precision era that benefits such studies. In order to improve theoretical explanations and find new experimental designs, assessment of both experimental and theoretical uncertainties is essential. Thus the community of nuclear scientists is working towards the quantification and reduction of uncertainties using different approaches. The workshop will focus on discussing the challenges and opportunities of this endeavor from different perspectives, including recent progress in chiral effective field theory, many-body theory, and new emulator techniques that facilitate uncertainty quantification. We want to pay special attention to the applications of Bayesian approaches which offer a better framework to deal with uncertainties in nuclear physics.

How did their quantum fluctuations imprint on cosmological observables (e.g., non-Gaussianity) or survive as cosmological relics today (e.g., dark matter, matter/antimatter asymmetry)? How can these degrees of freedom be embedded into a compelling UV theory? Workshop — Neutrino Frontiers
25. Jun 2024 - 19. Jul 2024 • Firenze , Italien
Veranstalter:
Galileo Galilei Institute
Zusammenfassung:
The neutrino oscillation discovery was a breakthrough with an impact in particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. While most of the mixing parameters are precisely measured, key open questions remain including the neutrino absolute mass and mass ordering, the neutrino nature, the existence of CP violation in the lepton sector, of non-standard interactions and of sterile neutrinos. While the majority of the available oscillation results are understandable by considering three active neutrinos only, some anomalies are actively debated. In parallel with the progress in our knowledge of neutrino properties important advances were made in cosmology and astrophysics. Among the open problems is neutrino flavor evolution in dense astrophysical media. In particular, recent theoretical studies of dense weakly interacting many-body neutrino systems in astrophysical environments uncovered novel connections to other domains including quantum computing. Moreover, the observation of ultra-high energy neutrinos opened a new window in neutrino astronomy; while the discovery of the diffuse supernova neutrino background is expected in the foreseeable future. The goal of the workshop is to create a collaborative and brainstorming atmosphere around key open issues at the neutrino frontiers. Neutrino 2024 will take place just before the GGI program that will happen at a very timely period when running experiments might deliver first results. Crossing results from Earth experiments, astrophysics and cosmology will be a major tool to push forward progress on crucial open issues at the frontiers.

Effective Theories for Nonperturbative Physics
05. Aug 2024 - 16. Aug 2024 • Mainz , Deutschland
Veranstalter:
MITP - Mainz Institute for Theoretical Physics, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
Zusammenfassung:
In the past decades, the Standard Model has been established to increasingly higher accuracy at experiments, which is a remarkable achievement for perturbation theory of both the strong and weak interactions. In contrast, tests for nonperturbative predictions of Standard Model physics are sorely lacking, even though nonperturbative phenomena lie at the heart of many expectations for SM and BSM physics. In particular, the role of EW sphalerons in baryogenesis, the role of QCD instantons in strong CP, and the fundamental mass gap problem of Yang-Mills theory are all commonly shared expectations about the behavior of SM physics beyond perturbation theory.

Veranstalter:
MIAPbP - Munich Institute for Astro-, Particle and BioPhysics an institute of the Excellence Cluster ORIGINS
Zusammenfassung:
Fertile common ground has emerged for the mathematical structures that control perturbative calculations in different domains of fundamental physics – quantum field theory, general relativity, and their extension to string theory. This program brings together experts in these various domains of physics, as well as mathematicians with expertise in higher-genus surfaces and Calabi-Yau periods. Through an in-depth exchange among these communities, we aim to: · trigger technology transfer for advancing the precision frontier in perturbative quantum field theory and string theory, leading to insights that will impact both phenomenology, such as collider and gravitational-wave physics, and formal theory, such as string dualities and holography; · chart a course towards new understanding of the role of special functions in high energy physics, opening new avenues to reformulate quantum field theory and string theory to manifest the similarities of their mathematical structures.

Workshop — Theory Challenges in the Precision Era of the Large Hadron Collider
28. Aug 2024 - 13. Okt 2024 • Firenze , Italien
Veranstalter:
Galileo Galilei Institute
Zusammenfassung:
The workshop aims at bringing together world experts in precision Standard Model phenomenology in response to the anticipated accuracy of new high-quality data from Run 3 of the LHC. With an increasing number of experimental analyses limited by theoretical uncertainties the theory community is challenged to provide predictions with a matching precision and to continue the development of frontier tools. Starting from an overview of available theoretical predictions and gathering feedback from the experimental community, areas in need for improvements will identified. The ultimate goal is to lay the foundations for precision measurements of Standard Model observables during future runs of the LHC. A kick-off conference will be held in the first week (August 28 to September 01, 2023) as a basis for the activities during the rest of the workshop.

Brazilian-German WE-Heraeus-Seminar — Hadron Spectroscopy and the New Unexpected Resonances
22. Sep 2024 - 28. Sep 2024 • Paraty, RJ, Brasilien
Veranstalter:
Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation
Zusammenfassung:
In the Standard Model of particle physics, all the forces that make up the different interactions show basically the same behavior, with a force proportional to the inverse-square of the distance. The proper sets of theories are called gauge theories. The strong interaction, however, is different from the other interactions due to its non-perturbative character and the still unexplained confinement of quarks and gluons and dynamical mass generation in hadrons. To explore these fundamental questions in the fascinating and not well-understood strong sector of the Standard Model is at the heart of hadron physics and of this workshop.

817. WE-Heraeus-Seminar — Precision Atomic Physics Experiments to Probe for New Physics
23. Sep 2024 - 27. Sep 2024 • Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation
Zusammenfassung:
Our current best description of nature at the quantum scale is based on the Standard Model of particle physics (SM), while Einstein’s theory of relativity is based on a classical framework of space-time and describes cosmological scales. The fundamental incompatibility between the two descriptions is one of the big unsolved puzzles in physics. The existence of dark matter and dark energy and the apparent asymmetry between matter and antimatter are only two more of many more open questions that leave physicists puzzled. This seminar brings together experts from different fields of physics to discuss precision experiments to probe for New Physics that might hint towards solving these puzzles.
Themen:
Topics include tests of Einstein’s theory of relativity using precision measurements in laboratory and large scale experiments, e.g. using spectroscopy, atom and nanoscopic particle interferometers, lunar laser ranging and gravitational wave detectors. A particular focus lies on the search for 5th forces extending to cosmological observations, isotope shift spectroscopy of neutral atoms and ions interpreted via King plot analysis, torsion balances and free-falling macroscopic bodies.

What is Particle Theory?
06. Jan 2025 - 11. Apr 2025 • Santa Barbara, Vereinigte Staaten
Veranstalter:
Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, Santa Barbara
Zusammenfassung:
The 21st century has seen tremendous progress towards understanding the elementary constituents of matter, the forces that bind them, and the organizing principles that unite them. Concerted experimental and theoretical efforts have culminated in the discovery of the Higgs boson and the observation of gravitational waves, while also excluding countless proposed new phenomena. Today the central questions of particle physics are sharper than ever – from the nature of dark matter and dark energy, to the patterns of flavor and unification, to the origin of mass and the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking -- but answering them will require both the energetic synthesis of existing methods and the genesis of entirely new ones.

Generalized Symmetries in Quantum Field Theory: High Energy Physics, Condensed Matter, and Quantum Gravity
10. Mär 2025 - 09. Mai 2025 • Santa Barbara, Vereinigte Staaten
Veranstalter:
Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, Santa Barbara
Zusammenfassung:
Generalized symmetries have recently emerged as a unifying theme in high energy theory, phenomenology, condensed matter physics, mathematics, and quantum gravity. This field has witnessed a literal explosion of new results within all these different areas. This program will bring together experts from this diverse set of fields, to first consolidate recent progress and more importantly, to find common ground to explore, across disciplines, the exciting physical implications of generalized symmetries. To date, the isolated development has led to several related concepts being developed independently, in different contexts and without much cross-interaction. The program aims to consolidate these divergent approaches and foster interactions between researchers in high energy, condensed matter physics and mathematics, hopefully identifying synergies that drive future joint developments. Due to the truly interdisciplinary character of this subject, this program will convene scientists to discuss 1. Generalized Symmetries: hep-th meets cond-mat 2. Non-Invertible Symmetries 3. Topological Order 4. Generalized Symmetries in String Theory, Holography and Quantum Gravity 5. Phenomenological Applications, and, 6. Mathematics, in particular Higher Category Theory.

Zusammenfassung:
Over the past ten years tremendous progress has been achieved in quantum field theory thanks to the realization that symmetries can be interpreted in terms of the action of topological defects on the space of operators. This gives a generalization of the notion of symmetries, explicitly realized in many instances exploiting Lagrangian field theory techniques, uncovering a rich and unexpected landscape of physical effects in condensed matter, high energy physics, and quantum gravity. This conference will bring together the major experts in the subject, and strives to be an opportunity for participants to quickly get up to speed with the most recent advances and open problems in the field.
