Interpretation of liver biopsies for young hepatologists
12 Apr 2024 - 13 Apr 2024 • Barcelona, Spain
Organizer:
The European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL)
Abstract:
A few decades ago it was common that experienced hepatologists had a major role in the interpretation of liver biopsy findings; in some cases the liver pathologist was indeed a clinician. The combination of clinical expertise and knowledge in pathology was considered very valuable. Nevertheless, the super-specialization of medicine and the incorporation of new (and more complex) diagnostic techniques in pathology has diminished the role of the liver disease specialist in the interpretation of liver biopsies. Pathologists are currently in charge of liver biopsy diagnosis. It is still very important, however, to discuss each case with the clinicians who are in charge of the patient. It is not uncommon that the findings in a liver biopsy may correspond to a wide spectrum of diseases. In such cases, a good clinical history, relevant laboratory results and imaging data may be crucial to narrow the diagnostic possibilities. The discussion between clinicians and pathologists is thus crucial to reach a diagnosis.

Personalized medicine in hepatobiliary malignancies
26 Apr 2024 - 27 Apr 2024 • Heidelberg, Germany
Organizer:
The European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL)
Abstract:
After years of stagnation, a paradigm shift has occurred in the therapy of hepatobiliary malignancies: immune-oncology based combinations and new options in the second line revolutionized the treatment of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, while biliary cancers – endowed with a genuinely high frequency of targetable lesions – evolved as a role model for precision oncology. These developments have generated a growing need for clinicians, pathologists and translational scientists to gain an in-depth understanding of diagnostic and clinical strategies that facilitate the implementation of individualized treatment concepts in hepato-oncology. The EASL school on “Personalized medicine in hepatobiliary malignancies” transitions fluently between molecular pathology diagnostics and clinical translation and provides room and space to foster interdisciplinary exchange. Under the guidance of experts in the field (liver pathologists, clinical and basic hepato-oncologists), students will gain confidence in the interpretation of molecular diagnostics reports and perform group work to build innovative treatment concepts for patients with hepatobiliary cancers. In addition to short lectures, panel discussions and a “live microscopy session”, the school features thought-provoking discourses on the diagnostic and therapeutic future of hepato-oncology.

Steatotic Liver Disease – from pathogenesis to treatment
26 Apr 2024 - 27 Apr 2024 • Aarhus, Denmark
Organizer:
The European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL)
Abstract:
Steatotic Liver Disease (SLD) is proposed to be the most prevalent liver disease Worldwide due to the close association with the metabolic syndrome and epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes. End-stage liver disease, development of hepatocellular carcinoma and increased risk of cardiovascular disease warrants a pro-active holistic approach to the patient with SLD. With this EASL School of Hepatology focused on SLD we will provide an in-depth update on the pathogenesis, screening and treatment of SLD including co-morbidities. The school will provide state of the art presentations by experts in the field and with strong interactions by participants. The participants are expected to be able to implement their new knowledge in order to improve the care of patients with SLD.

AMMF Hybrid 2024 European Cholangiocarcinoma Conference
08 May 2024 - 10 May 2024 • London, United Kingdom
Organizer:
AMMF
Abstract:
The annual AMMF cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) conference facilitates and encourages the sharing of information amongst interested medics in the UK, Europe and internationally. It provides an opportunity to find out about improvements in treatments, new and ongoing clinical trials, updates on research and encourages collaboration between researchers and medics. For 2024, AMMF is delighted to welcome Professor Shahid Khan and Professor Chiara Braconi, two internationally renowned specialists at the forefront of the CCA world, who will co-chair a conference dedicated to exploring the advances that are happening now. They will host a faculty of speakers selected from across the globe who will speak of the challenges faced and advances made in the understanding of CCA, and will discuss the importance of accelerating progress we are now seeing.

Basic Science School 2024: Precision Cut Liver Slices and Liver Organoids – versatile ex-vivo models of liver disease
02 Oct 2024 - 04 Oct 2024 • London, United Kingdom
Organizer:
The European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL)
Abstract:
Many of the limitations of cellular and animal models of liver disease can be overcome by using human precision cut liver slices and liver organoid cultures. These cutting-edge 3D models can recapitulate the complex multi-cellular pathways involved in liver injury and disease progression. In this Basic Science EASL school, each participant will receive hands-on practical training in the preparation, culture and characterisation of precision cut liver slices. Each participant will directly derive liver organoids from liver tissue and foetal liver tissue. We will train participants in small groups of 6 persons, allowing each delegate to perform these techniques individually. Further to this, each participant will walk away with the ability to induce steatosis, injury, inflammation and fibrosis in the slices and the capability to perform microscopic evaluation of both slices and organoids.
