 Dates 14 May 2012 → 16 May 2012
[ID=462272] Go to top of page
 LocationWarsaw, Poland
Abstract Fine grained sediments form approximately 70% of sedimentary record. Because of the wide spectrum of the application, the great increase of the interest in shale is observed. Shales are traditionally known as a source and seal rock for the petroleum industry and become recognized nowadays as very important reservoir target in the shale gas/oil play. Their low permeability has also a major impact on waste storage planning, including CO2 and nuclear waste. The Paleozoic basins in Poland have recently become the area of very intense studies of shale sequences in Europe due to their hydrocarbon potential.

 LocationAndover, NH, United States
 Organizer Gordon Research Conferences
Abstract Despite uncertain economic times for much of the world, prices for critical minerals continue to rise as they are depleted by mining and discovery of new resources becomes more difficult. The 2012 Gordon Conference on the Geochemistry of Mineral Deposits will present a forum to present and discuss new data and ideas on processes that control the formation and location of a wide range of ore deposits, including precious metals, base metals, and other critical elements. Sessions will include lithospheric controls on deposits, magmatic and hydrothermal processes, active hydrothermal systems as analogues to mineral deposits, and distal expressions of large deposits that can guide exploration. Evening sessions will focus on puzzling, controversial and commonly overlooked ore systems. Our goal is to bring together industry, university, and other research geoscientists working on all aspects of geoscience that are relevant to the formation and distribution of major mineral deposits. In addition to attracting leaders and rising stars to present cutting edge research, we will be encouraging students and junior scientists to attend and participate by presenting their work in poster format. This Conference, as past conferences have, presents a truly unique opportunity for geoscientists of various disciplines and career stages to exchange ideas, cultivate relationships, and devise new research directions that will help meet resource needs for future generations.

11.Rock Deformation — Feedback Processes in Rock Deformation
 Dates 19 Aug 2012 → 24 Aug 2012
[ID=455953] Go to top of page
 LocationAndover, NH, United States
 Organizer Gordon Research Conferences
Abstract Feedback processes are vitally important in controlling the rates and mechanisms of rock deformation. Positive feedbacks lead to accelerating rates, and commonly to spatial focusing. Localization and acceleration of creep is often associated with stress and/or strain rate dependent grain size reduction, frictional heating, or viscous shear heating. The presence of melt may help to localize and accelerate deformation, and in turn deformation may help to localize melt transport. Volume changes during retrograde metamorphic reactions may, under some circumstances, lead to fractures that maintain or increase permeability and reactive surface area, which in turn accelerates reaction rates. Hydraulic fracture often triggers a widening cascade of frictional failures on adjacent fracture systems. Feedbacks that form or reactivate closely-spaced fractures in the upper crust have relevance for, e.g., geological storage of CO2, enhanced geothermal power systems, and shale gas extraction. Clustering of earthquakes involves feedbacks in stress distribution on different faults, or segments of fault zones, that focus deformation in both time and space. Negative feedbacks can modulate or prevent accelerating strain. Gravitational instabilities, such as "delamination", "relamination", and diapirism, are affected by both positive and negative feedbacks when material undergoes phase transformations driven by changing pressure and temperature. Changes in pore pressure due to metamorphic reactions and/or shear heating can modulate earthquake behavior. There is increasing understanding of the mechanisms that limit earthquake rupture zones, and cause slow slip rather than seismic events. Crystallization in pore space can randomize previously focused fluid flow, reduce permeability, and bring metamorphic reactions to a halt. All of these feedbacks are related in a rich interplay of geodynamic processes.

 LocationCape Town, South Africa
Abstract This, the 3rd International Symposium on Processing of Nickel Ores & Concentrates (Nickel Processing '12), is organised by Minerals Engineering International in consultation with Dr Norman Lotter.

Nickel-bearing ores are seldom in the league of mega-tonnage such as occur in the porphyry copper deposits. The scale and life-of-mine of nickel operations are thus much more limited, and one has to maximize the asset worth by processing efficiency rather than volume. Whereas the nickel market has started to stabilize after the recession of 2008/9, it will be a while before we see the record highs of a few years ago when the metal price peaked at $25/lb. Although nickel operations are often complemented by other payable metals such as copper and the platinum-group elements, under the current market conditions, every gain that can be sustainably made on recovery and grade enhances the business case. It is intended that the conference will attract contributions from experts around the world, to provide a forum for discussion of common problems and possible performance opportunities.
