25.go to top of page[ID=351608]Transitions to Sustainability
30 Nov 2010 → 03 Dec 2010; Auckland, New Zealand

abstract: Before 2050, our global civilisation faces one of its greatest challenges: to match our demands to the limited resources of the planet. Business as usual will not be enough to ensure the ongoing viability of our community. Radical changes in mindsets, behaviour and whole systems are needed to avoid the collapse of our social structure, our economic structure and our environment. For many 2050 is a long way off, but the changes that we need to make before then are fundamental and urgent. It requires leadership from scientists, engineers, and designers to create a future that serves the needs of the people, while protecting our planet. We need change that sweeps through our economic, education and infrastructure systems and engages and motivates the individuals that make up our society.

What are the transition pathways to a more sustainable future? What can engineers and scientists do to help this change? The Conference in December 2010 will build momentum for that transition by showcasing current successes, sharing the challenges and highlighting the directions and connections required to Transition to Sustainability.

07 Dec 2010 → 09 Dec 2010; Rajshahi, Bangladesh

abstract: Bangladesh is considered as the most threatened country in the world referring to climate change impact. The entire world is now positively conscious about the potential threat that is going to affect almost each and every parts of the planet in different magnitudes and in different dimensions. One significant aspect is the possible sea-level rise that is estimated to displace about one-third of the population of Bangladesh if it rises more than 3 meters from present average sea-level. Multiplied impacts are going to affect different aspects of the country such as food security, human health, bio-diversity loss etc. and finally the impact will potentially affect other parts of the world through the world’s global partnership. The question appears whether the nation is ready to cope with the possible change. The impact of climate change may affect locally but its management must be global and the mega- issues can only be tackled if the entire earth unites to work together. So the seminar intends to address certain selected aspects which are imminent and burning and yet to be decided appropriately to outline a strategy and to show how and where we can work together to tackle the problem of the 21st century – the century which is going to the most important in earth’s history. During the last several world meets the national leaders have perpetually been unsuccessful due to improper understanding of three things – one is the reasons of crises, the second one is the depth and dimension of the effect and the third one is the possible way of solution. The proposed seminar is a small effort to unite ideas and concepts to open up a path for better understanding of the three misunderstood goals.

The seminar will provide an opportunity to discuss current environmental issues, promote greater collaboration and strengthen the connection among scientists, policy makers and practitioners.

21 Jun 2011 → 23 Jun 2011; New Forest, United Kingdom

abstract: The first international conference on Food and the Environment will focus on a variety of issues affecting food production and distribution including those related to natural and anthropogenic causes. The conference will emphasise the effects of modern food production processes and how they can affect human health. The many advances made for over a century in food production have resulted in the possibility of feeding the whole of humanity. These advances have been achieved by the introduction of new work practices and a variety of substances into the food chain, the whole process being affected by other environmental conditions such as contamination of air, water and soil resulting from sources other than agriculture. On the other hand the food production and food processing can have detrimental effects on the environment. Some of the major challenges remain with extensive farming, which though offering higher productivity and larger volumes, should not either compromise the quality of the product or cause suffering in animals. Given the importance of the problem which affects the whole world population, it is essential to understand the consequences of food production processes and demands of the rising standard of living can have on the food consumed daily by the world population. Of particular importance are the effects on human health and the well-being of the population, as well as the more general issues related to possible damage to the environment and ecology. Food-related problems, in spite of their importance, have not been sufficiently well discussed in relation to their possible consequences. This conference aims to better understand the challenges faced by society in this regard.

topics: Food processing, Contamination, Pharmaceuticals in food, Obesity, Pesticides, Hormones, Food and fecundity, Genetic engineering, Freezing and thawing, Heavy metals, Pathogens, Salination, Desertification, Transportation, Traceability, Modern farming, Climate change, Law, Epidemiology, Water resources, Animal welfare, Environmental impact

abstract: Sustainable Development and Planning 2011 aims to bring together scientists and other stakeholders from across the globe to discuss the latest scientific advances in the field, as well as to seek and highlight developments in managerial strategies and assessment tools for policy and decision makers at the planning level. The conference addresses the subject of regional development in an integrated way as well as in accordance with the principles of sustainability. It has become apparent that planners, environmentalists, architects, engineers, policy makers and economists have to work together in order to ensure that planning and development can meet our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations. In recent years there has been an increase in spatial problems in many countries that has led to planning crises. Planning problems are often connected with uneven development, deterioration of the quality of urban life and destruction of the environment. The increasing urbanisation of the world coupled with the global issues of environmental pollution, resources shortages and economic restructuring are leading to major crises. Problems of environmental management and planning are not restricted to urban areas. Environments such as rural areas, forests, coastal regions and mountains face their own problems that require urgent solutions in order to avoid irreversible damage. The use of modern technologies in planning give us new potential to monitor and prevent environmental degradation.

50.go to top of page[ID=364617]WBC-2 — 2nd World Biodiversity Congress
08 Sep 2011 → 12 Sep 2011; KUCHING, Malaysia

abstract: Biological Diversity is the variety of life on Earth, from the simplest bacterial gene to the vast, complex rainforests of the Amazon. Human beings are an integral part of this diversity, as is the food, medicine, clothing and other biological resources that sustain us. Biodiversity is being threatened at an unprecedented rate due to habitat alternation, degradation and fragmentation and human misuses or over-exploitation. It is therefore not surprising that biodiversity conservation in recent years has gained considerable importance all over the globe. On the other hand, every country, particularly the developing countries, is facing the needs of developing its economy, improving peoples' livelihood or providing food security and supply for a rapidly increasing population. After the United Nation Conference on Environment and Development was held in Rio in 1991, many countries have formulated or are implementing a series of action plans associated with their own environmental protection, biodiversity conservation and priority development. Judicious planning and meticulous implementation of different innovative programmes of United Nations, Governments, and Research institutions, Private Organizations, Universities and NGOs have paved the way for the conservation of biological diversity on our earth. The Second World Congress on Biodiversity will provide a forum for reorienting policies and programmes for any country in more productive and sustainable biodiversity Utilization and conservation. The four day congress organized by Century Foundation, Bangalore, India at Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia will help to develop an agenda to ensure conservation of bio-resources and ecosystem protection for sustainable development. It will bring together the international scientific community involved in the study of biological diversity and a unique opportunity to deepen our understanding of nature and natural resources and experience the wonderful Borneo Island.

51.go to top of page[ID=364217]Lake Sustainability 2011 — First International Conference on Lake Sustainability
13 Sep 2011 → 15 Sep 2011; New Forest, United Kingdom

abstract: The first international conference on Lake Sustainability aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from a wide range of different disciplines involved in the study of lake environments and ecosystems. The conference will attract physical scienctists, biologists, ecologists, as well as others working on other aspects of lake sustainability, including economists, social and political scientists and specialists that can contribute to a better understanding of lacustrine environments. The management of lakes is facing numerous challenges nowadays, some of them related to natural and many others to anthropogenic causes. Climate change in particular will have serious consequences for lake environments, while man’s increasing demands will require an integrated approach to lake management, considering not only the entire watershed area but also the different socioeconomic and ecological aspects. Any proposed solution will require improvements in ecosystems services, and the development of lake ecosystems. Furthermore, more information needs to be processed and shared regarding lake and habitat restoration and the conference would welcome concrete examples and case studies. Lake systems are complex and characterized by being in a continuous state of evolution and change. They can be easily disturbed, leading to major ecological or environmental disasters as evidenced by many cases in the past. Their behaviour requires careful analysis before attempts are made to alter existing conditions. Well documented disasters have emphasized the need to consider lake environments in their entirety, applying interdisciplinary approaches. The conference will deal with all topics related to the behavior of lakes, including physical, biological, pollution, water resources management, socio-economic aspects, restoration and exploitation and many others as given in the conference topics.

topics: Climate change, Drainage, Saline lakes, Floodplain lakes, Alpine lakes, Artificial lakes and reservoirs, Sustainable management, Ecosystems, Ecological indicators, Hydrobiological, Water chemistry, Palaeoenvironments, Water resources management, Agriculture, Pollution, Toxicology, Eutrophication, Lake and habitat restoration, Leisure and tourism

53.go to top of page[ID=364192]Water and Society 2011 — First International Conference on Water and Society
05 Dec 2011 → 07 Dec 2011; Las Vegas, United States

abstract: This first International Conference on Water and Society aims to provide a multi-disciplinary forum for the presentation and discussion of many issues affecting water resources today. The meeting will encourage trans-disciplinary communication on issues related to the nature of water, and its use and exploitation by society. The conference is motivated by the need to bridge the gap between the broad spectrum of social sciences and humanistic disciplines and specialists in physical sciences, biology, environmental sciences, health and others that, in the words of Ilya Prigogine, constitute the “hard” sciences. Water, as the source of all life, is the most precious substance on the planet. Its comparative abundance has led to many misuses which will seriously impair our common future. Problems such as water degradation and contamination are impossible to resolve without the participation of many different disciplines. These issues are, by definition, trans-national and relate to rights of states and hence it is essential to discuss these at international level to arrive at equitable and binding solutions that will ensure the rights of society to quality water supplies.

topics: The nature of water, Water as a human right, Climate change, Future water demands, Water resources contamination, Surface and sub-surface water resources, Irrigation, Desertification,Sanitation, Health, Transnational water rights, Legislation and controls, Water and disaster management

54.go to top of page[ID=364191]Ravage of the Planet III — Third International Conference on Management of Natural Resources, Sustainable Development and Ecological Hazards
14 Dec 2011 → 16 Dec 2011; Shah Alam, Malaysia

abstract: The basic premise of the meeting is the need to determine urgent solutions before we reach a point of irreversibility. Our current civilisation has fallen into a self-destructive process by which natural resources are consumed at an increasing rate. This process has now spread across the planet in search of further sources of energy and materials. The aggressiveness of this quest is such that the future of our planet is in the balance. The process is compounded by the pernicious effects of the resulting pollution. The conference will discuss the objective of reaching sustainability in the framework of all different disciplines in order to arrive at optimal solutions. Hence this meeting is essentially transdisciplinary in order to find appropriate sustainable solutions, i.e. those involving collaboration across a wide range of disciplines. Like the first two, the aim of this conference is to take stock of our situation and try to facilitate constructive principles and policies for a way forward.

topics: The re-encounter, Political and social issues, Planning and development, Safety, Health risks, New technologies, Learning from nature, Ecology, Energy, Water Resources, Air, Soil
